Sword gripping issues aside, I think most Robin of Sherwood fans would regard this story as one of the show’s high points, with very high stakes and an epic feel. I like the way the outlaws operate as a kind of Magnificent Seven here, riding to the rescue of the terrorised villagers, and a genuine sense of menace and foreboding is created.
You may have noticed a continuity issue in this episode, with Marian speaking as if she thinks her father is still dead. This is down to the fact that The Swords of Wayland was originally supposed to start the second series, but got moved to later in the run so that it could be broadcast on British TV over the Easter weekend in 1985. Given the subject matter, showing it over that particular holiday was a rather bold move, and one that provoked some controversy at the time…

I didn’t mind her slipup. Travel took a long time back then, and he was far off on a dangerous mission. I figured he hadn’t gotten word to her in a long time, so she assumed he didn’t make it and got a pleasant surprise later.

The beginning of this episode was so cool with those "demons" riding. Yeah, those capes are so cool. They look like they're on fire! I love Little John's humor in this. "Surround yourself with salt, soot, sausages for all I care!"

Hi Alexa! This is another example of Richard Carpenter using myth and legend in the show. Wayland in norse mythology was a great blacksmith and in Oxfordshire there is a Neolithic burial mound called Wayland's Smithy. According to local legend if a horse that needs shoes is left there overnight with money in the morning it will have new shoes.

Wayland also appears in Germanic and Latin tales as well, so he was known right across Europe.

Very cool - I don’t personally work with the Norse pantheon, so I only know the basics for it.

I live about 6 miles from Wayland's Smithy long barrow, as the crow flies. Great stories attached to it. ⚔🗡

Good morning Alexa (well, its 8.10am here in the UK). This is my favourite ROS story. 7.00 the village of Uffcombe was built in Black Rock, Cheddar gorge and is both accessible on a public walk but can be virtually visited in Google Earth. Its characterised by those distinctive dipping limestone rock beds. This story got complaints from the religious since they thought Wells cathedral was being used for the dark arts. When the first sword is brought down into the crypt at the start, only the steps seen in some shots are real, when it cuts to the crypt itself, its a film set. This had to be pointed out by the show's creator stating that you can have someone come downstairs in one house, then due to editing, they can enter the lounge of a completely different house...!. Something lost on those who complained at the desecration of a holy site....the crypt was in a studio:).

Yes, never run your hands down a blade unless it is a prop (or similar designed devices) used in movies (which usually do not have any real edges) and even then, be careful. Respect the blade. Rusty & damaged swords can be worse. Burrs can cut the skin very easily. Infections are common w/ these kind of cuts & needs to be treated accordingly (to it's severity).

The first part of my favourite episodes of RoS. The costumes are gorgeous and the locations stunning.
I think that PJ might have stolen the Hounds of Lucifer and made them into ring wraiths.🤓
I also loved Marion's little fur jacket. My head canon is that her husband made it for her.
Mark Ryan (Nasir) knows his way around a sword. He has been sword master in his career.
You are going to love the next one.😁

Those swords aren't exactly period acurate. If Wayland made them they'd be more like a Viking sword or a German Saex. Maybe. I'm no expert.

First of all, Rula Lenska is a fantastic evil nun. This is one of several episodes where we are reminded that Marian and Tuck are unique among the outlaws: in her case, she has a keen understanding of people because she's spent a life adjacent to the courts but still working an estate with and for her father. In Tuck's case, he is clearly the most educated member of the band and that knowledge comes in handy on several occasions.

Every time Cernunnos shows up, I think of when the stags shed their antlers in Wollaton Park. Every Witch in the county shows up to try and snag one😆. I get so freakin' homesick sometimes.

I was not (and am not) any kind of expert on holding swords, yet I have owned a couple of properly forged non stage blades. I would hope that "don't run your hands along the blade" falls into the same broad category as "Basic Common Sense" and only is only ignored by the terminally idiotic.
This episode was my first exposure to Rula Lenska (Morgwyn of Ravenscar) and she did make an impression! Along with Richard O'Brien she was my favourite guest villain on the show.

Mangled mythologies. From Wiki - "The Luciferian label-in the sense of Lucifer-worshipper-was first used in the Gesta Treverorum in 1231 for a religious circle led by a woman named Lucardis (Luckhardis)."

I have a completely spoiler free recommendation for you that just came to me.
First, I've been enjoying the reactions to this series, And I'm glad you seem to be liking more of it than you're disliking. Also, I just want to again express general well wishes.
    Now, that recommendation...
Brotherhood of the Wolf / Le pacte des loups
The only detail I'll add is that there was a 2h30 cut shown in U.S. theaters and that is the version to watch. Frustratingly, it may not be the easiest version to lay hands on.

@alexachipman ...As for Brotherhood of the Wolf, the Shout Factory release currently on Amazon claims to be the correct length and also claims to be 28% off at the moment (but that could just be the price it is all the time on the site). If I had any disposable ifunds whatsoever, I'd be inclined to send it to you, but sadly, we're not in a position where that's remotely feasible.

    • @dostatochno

@alexachipman apparently youtube didn't like me trying to tell you a good site for finding what releases exist of movies. If one were looking for, let's say, a "bluray"... the most obvious possible name for a commercial website you might try would let you search releases (including physical and streaming) from lots of different countries (country is at the end of the search bar) and gives info about included languages and region encoding (or lackthereof).
      Hope that's of some use.

It's a bit Magnificent 7 with added magic, this two parter, but it's lovely to look at and very well paced. Nasir gets to be cooler than ever and the set build is great.
