Idaho is a beautiful state with a lot of great wildlife. My best wishes to you and your wife! Sending love from Massachusetts!
Now that was something. Great job and courage. Makes me think about what equipment I need to have when I am out wolf trapping. I don't start till January up here because I am tied up elk and deer hunting and too many people out in the woods. Maybe a side benefit is that the bears are hibernating by then.
I think so! Sept. 10th is much too soon. Too many people in the woods, the pelts are just starting to thicken up.....and BEARS! Oct. 10 is still too soon. Deer season opens the same day, elk opens Oct. 10th, and runs until Nov. 8th. Wolf trapping used to open Nov. 15th. The ground is frozen by then and traps are hard to set or get to, to check, but I think it was better. I do like setting traps in dry, unfrozen ground though!
Wow! Great work under pressure sir! It was nerve wracking just watching this, my empathy kept me thinking of what I would do in this scenario. You are a brave and honorable man. Glad everyone got away relatively unscathed. Regards from a first time viewer!
Thanks!! I really didn't like the idea of turning it loose on the end of that catch pole 3 feet away! I'm kind of glad that didn't work actually! There was no way to reach the trap, and hold the pole without him grabbing me!
I wonder too! That catch pole works great on smaller animals, but a bear that size, it was worthless. There was no way I could get close enough to get that trap off without him grabbing me.
This story gives a new appreciation for video cameras. That took some ingenuity. The outcome certainly could have been different. Very, very dangerous. Many people do not understand how powerful even a small bear is. I surmise you will give this a great deal of thought now that it's over and I bet you will equip yourself much better in case of a reoccurrence. First and foremost I would recruit some friends to help, if possible.
I have added rope, and I have a idea about a release gadget instead of those cables also. They are amazingly strong! A mean dog trying to bite you is scary enough, but bears are much worse!
I just return from a deer hunt in the mountains, never seen a bear that big. Sir you were truly skilled in releasing that bear, I m glad you had the hart to do this, putting your self in danger like that, some other person would have probably walk away and not deal with this complicated problem, but I can tell your a real woodsman with problem solving abilities and skills. I agree with your lady I m glad you did not have to kill him. Congrats and thank you.
Man oh man, or should I say Sir oh Sir? You are a problem solver. I've seen some hairy situations in my day, but that was as hairy as it gets! lol Great job brother!
MUSKRAT...Awesome job letting him go!!! My hat is off to you. I trap Wolves too as you know. I hope I never have to let one of them go:-) Montana opens Wolf trapping later because of this:-) They did just change the season to where we can trap in November several weeks earlier than normal:-) I hope we do not get bears caught like this :-) Thanks for the video and seriously...GREAT JOB letting him go, I bet you had to throw your underwear away...lol....stay safe...MTJOA
HA! Yep! Need new under ware! Idaho's wolf trapping season used to open Nov. 15th. Then last year they mover it back to Oct. 10....the same day deer season opens. This year, they moved it back to Sept. 10th.....too soon! Bears are still out, bird hunters with dogs, deer and elk hunters, and people enjoying the tail end of Summer/ start of Fall. It is nice setting traps in unfrozen ground though. I set these thinking I could check traps while deer/elk hunting and save gas......
Have you guys ever raised a wolf as a pet. They are the most beautiful souls ever. I raised a Gray Tundra wolf from a puppy. Named him Samson. He more human than wolf. I loved him. He passed away at the age of 9 years. We buried him in the front side yard beside our other old pets, Jack, dean and Max. They all have headstones too with their names on them.
It was! That trap chain looked mighty small to hold him! If it had broke, it would have been really bad! I think the chain was rated 1,200 pounds though and it held up fine.
That was awesome . You and your wife did a spectacular job of saving a very large , beautiful bear . Takes massive amount of gut to do that and the two of you had it in bucket fulls ! You both are good people .
If this didn't work, that was plan "B"....or maybe "C"!! We didn't have cell phone service clear back there, and I got a new phone and haven't put in Fish & Game's phone number yet. This spot is at least 25 miles from any house or paved road.
@@MuskratOutdoors our lines are close to roads . have land in 4 counties to trap this season . the fuel prices are going to make it rough . what trap was that , it looked like a bridger #5

Great work and thinking on the Fly. I couldn't even imagine. you definitely handle it better than I ever could have. What a day to let you know that you're alive
Just watching that was intense. Guess that's another reason I'm not a fan of those traps. We have very few wolves & no bears but I get that wolves need controlled there. I guess I'm just a big softy & very clueless about hunting & trapping but isn't there a lil more humane trap that would work on wolves? Thought that crossed my clueless mind was maybe keeping some honey & enough sleeping pills to knock out a bear may be a good idea. Or a tranquilizer gun with enough of a dose to drop him. I don't know if the laws permit that. I think I watched too many Yogi the bear cartoons as a kid & a picnic basket with food stuffed with sleeping pills popped right into my head. Lol. If I ever wanted to catch a road runner I'd probably put on roller blades & strap a rocket to my butt. Can't wait to hear how ridiculous my idea of a different trap or ways to knock out the bear are. At least I'm admitting I'm clueless. Glad yall are ok!
HA! I would love to see those roller skates and rocket on your butt!! I loved those cartoons too! Actually, these traps are the same ones they used when they trapped the wolves that were relocated here back in 1995. They really are pretty humane. The jaws have a gap in them so they don't close all the way. They are designed to just hold the foot and not break bones or do a lot of damage. Unless they twist wrong or something, most times there is only a little bruising. No long lasting damage. I don't think the dart guns are legal without a license. Fish & Game has them, but they don't like to use them if they don't have to. If they drug a bear or mountain lion, the meat can't be eaten for a number of days or weeks, so once the animal is set free, if someone does shoot it, the meat will be wasted.
@@MuskratOutdoors The idea of the rocket on roller skates took me down the yt rabbit hole. People strapping on rockets were on their feet but I did find a vid with a jet pack that was cool. Tried leaving a link to it but yt kept deleting this comment when I had the link. I see now about the trap. I thought it was the kind with the sharp teeth that bite into them because I couldn't see the detail on this small screen. I thought that bear was just tough as nails to not limp away. Another thought, so will a coyote or wolf chew their leg off if they're stuck in one of these for a while or is that a myth? I still think this makes much more sense than I did before especially now that I know this is how they relocated them. That's a bummer that the darts would mess up the meat. I'd guess that picnic basket for a Yogi bear with sleeping pills might be a similar problem too then but maybe it's worth asking about just in case this ever happens again. When you mentioned needing actual rope as you were trying to get him tied up I wondered how my uncle & cousins who work in the rodeo would have done this. I can throw a lasso but don't see how that would have helped much with a bear with claws & sharp teeth unless you could lasso each limb & it's head before he bites or claws through them. I might consider bringing a muzzle that could have been slipped over his mouth but that does nothing for those claws. I'm amazed you were able to figure out a way to use those straps to open it from a distance. Very smart & very brave.
That was so amazing. And totally brave beyond belief. Now try imagine a Biden, Harris, supporter pumpkin spice latte drinking soy boy attempting the same thing, LET'S GO BRANDON
Seemed like a good bear trying its best to get away from a human tearing the holy hell out of its foot . Not surprised he thought he was still caught after release. Good of you to release him.
Pretty much what t was. Those traps are designed to just hold the foot though and have a gap in them that doesn't close all the way to prevent damage. He was fine and walked away without a limp.

We kind of figured I got him into that trouble, so we should get him out. Shooting him would have been easier, but not legal, and I don't want trouble with Fish & Game.
@@MuskratOutdoors yes sir...I understand completely...like I said , very impressive my friend!
@@kygreenskeeper8326 Thanks.
Thanks for the entertainment Gary! I knew you would figure it out. I enjoyed the deer you released you had done. I’m just glad the bear didn’t do what the deer had done to ya. It could have been bad thing. What you and Cindy do for fun…. lol God Bless!
I was thinking that too! That deer got even and I was afraid the bear might have talked with it!
He may have known he was free but resting and still in pain. He was tuckered out. You all probably were, lol. He was beautiful, though. I envy you guys seeing a bear in real life so close up.
Because I love that you freed him, even if it is law that you do, you didn't have to. No one would have known the difference had you not been recording, most likely. So, in my opinion, you probably would have freed him anyway because you all have a good heart. Subscribed.
Thank you, and you are right. We could have just shot him, but we didn't feel right about that. Even if we had gotten away with it, we would have felt guilty doing it. I'm glad this worked out the way it did.
You are a very patient, kind,& fortunate man!!
Thanks!
Talk about sticking to your ethics! I salute you two!! Thank you for sharing. Amazing work!!
Thanks! We would have loved to take him home, but it wouldn't have been right. I'm glad it worked out the way it did.
I kept holding my breath watching your encounter! My heart was pounding. That was one of the best things Ive seen. Great Job!
Great!! Thank you very much!
Thanks for watching! Thank you for being a good steward of the woods. Who say hunters just kill anything, I like to spearfish so I can take the right fish. That was some good common sense and doing what had to be done.
Thank you! Spearfishing would be fun. I tried it once in the river here for suckers. It would be fun to do it for real.
Holy cow! That was amazing! I am so happy you’re both OK! That’ll wake ya up for sure! Great job and thanks for sharing brother!
Thank you! It was kind of a sick feeling to see him in that trap, and knowing we had to get him out!
Thanks for all your efforts, your skills, and for not killing this beautiful bear!
Thank you. I did have a bear tag in my pocket, and bear season is going. I would have liked to take him home to be honest, but it would not have been legal, or right. We do eat bear meat, my Wife shot one this year that is really good, but big bears like this usually don't taste very good. No, he wasn't what we were after. We figured that we got him into this mess, we needed to get him out of it.

How on earth did I miss this one!!! This is one of the most amazing things I’ve seen on UA-cam in a long time! You, sir are a brave man, and God will surely bless you for it. I would be wishing for some kind of tranquilizer dart!😂 Well done Gary and Cindy!❤️
Thank you Guy! It was exciting for sure!! I'm not sure I could have done this without Cindy. She was a huge help and comfort knowing she was ready with her rifle if needed!
Wow buddy, that was a big ol’ angry bear. Glad all turned out well for everyone. You have some great ethics, good job on engineering the release. Had an angel on your shoulder for sure, and a saint watching your back. Kudos to you and Cindy. The only thing I could come up with, was a tranq dart. You guys were great.
Thank you very much. The dart was the last plan if nothing else worked. It would have taken several hours to get Fish & Game there to help. No cell phone service back there.
Unbelievable job! That was some good thinking on the fly, come along is a great tool, not sure I’d have thought about using it. Great outcome for both the bear and you guys 👍👍
Thank you! It was kind of the last ditch effort before going to Fish & Game. I'm glad it worked!
Holy smokes!!!! I have never seen a man get a bear out of a trap before... Til now!!!! Nice work, and thanks for setting a good example for other folks in similar situations 🔥😎🤙

Thank you very much! I was hoping this bear didn't talk to that deer! HA! Yeah, trappers are not as cruel as they want people to believe.
Holy crap Gray! That bear was huge! Glad you and Cindy are ok. That was intense.
THANK YOU! good to see ya Jaclyn! Once it was loose, I didn't like the way it was staring at Cindy.

That was incredible. I really didn’t think it was possible without tranquilizer.
We were starting to wonder!!!
And I thought it was interesting watching my old man release a badger from a coyote foothold trap here in Wisconsin!! Damn interesting video, wish he was still alive so I could show him this video, he would have loved it!!
I've never caught a badger. I bet that was exciting trying to let one go! Sorry to hear your Dad is gone. Mine is also. I sure miss him.

It was really exciting and scary. Had to just try to focus on what needed done......and chase that image of the bear eating us into a dark corner of my brain someplace!
Great job to both of you! You are a wonderful team! I have seen guys have a hard time releasing bobcats from coyote traps, but at least the bobcats didn't bend the poles, lol. Idaho is a beautiful state with a lot of great wildlife. My best wishes to you and your wife! Sending love from Massachusetts!
Thank you very much!! Cindy was great! She stayed calm and we got it done.
@@MuskratOutdoors Yes sir. You are an amazing team! Best regards to you both!
WTF??? Who would've thunk it?? Trappers should be licensed for tranquilizing unintended catches.
That would sure be nice! Sooner or later, someone will get hurt or killed doing this.
That was really cool seeing you wrestle that bear out of the trap, excellent job
Thank you! It was pretty exciting! I kept picturizing that bear attack scene on "The Revenant"!!
Wow, ya had me on the edge of my seat! That was a BIG bear! Great job you two!
It was a big 'un!! Thank you very much!
Wow! Great work under pressure sir!
It was nerve wracking just watching this, my empathy kept me thinking of what I would do in this scenario. You are a brave and honorable man. Glad everyone got away relatively unscathed. Regards from a first time viewer!
Thank you! We were happy it worked out too!
We need more people in this world like You!
Thank you very much!
You have my respect as a fellow trapper, getting out Eagles is a breeze compared to that! Both of you are good people.:)
Oh wow! Never caught an eagle.....I bet that is not fun either.
Whatever the ins and outs of how it came to be trapped , you put your life on the line to do what was right. Well done for that. All the best sir.
Thank you!
WOW!! SO GLAD THE BEAR AND YOU GUYS MADE IT!! YOU ARE A GOOD MAN FOR NOT KILLING THE BEAR!!
Thanks! We didn't want to kill him.
Wow just wow! Great job! Responsible trapper for sure. Great idea on how to release that trap from a distance.
Thanks!! I really didn't like the idea of turning it loose on the end of that catch pole 3 feet away! I'm kind of glad that didn't work actually! There was no way to reach the trap, and hold the pole without him grabbing me!
Sure glad it worked out well for you all(bear included). I doubt there is any good way for a lone trapper to release a bear that big.
Ya done good!
That was one exciting video, you have a lot of will power to do that, well done.
Thank you! I cut out a lot...it took about 1 1/2 hours total time.
Thank you very much! There are not very many that big in this area.....just my luck to catch a wopper! HA!
Man oh man, or should I say Sir oh Sir? You are a problem solver. I've seen some hairy situations in my day, but that was as hairy as it gets! lol Great job brother!
Ha! Thank you!
MUSKRAT...Awesome job letting him go!!! My hat is off to you. I trap Wolves too as you know. I hope I never have to let one of them go:-) Montana opens Wolf trapping later because of this:-) They did just change the season to where we can trap in November several weeks earlier than normal:-) I hope we do not get bears caught like this :-)
Thanks for the video and seriously...GREAT JOB letting him go, I bet you had to throw your underwear away...lol....stay safe...MTJOA
HA!
I had a dog that was part wolf. He was a great dog. We have carved rock headstones for our dogs as well. They deserve it!
Great job on the release, that must have been quite nerve racking at times,
Thank you very much!
Whoa - you got more guts than me! Glad everybody came out all right....Mr. Bear included. thanks for sharin.
Naw, just less brains! I'm glad we pulled it off too! I wasn't sure it was going to work out.
Uh, I am sure I would not have figured this one out.
Great job.
What's caliber sidearm do you carry?
Normally a 44WCF (44-40) but this day all I had was a 38 Special in an antique 1861 Colt reproduction. Small, but better than nothing!
Balls of steel
And the bear was a magnet!! Ha!
great release . thought you were going to have to get the game wardens to dart him .

Yes it was! t really got our hearts pounding!!
THAT was Amazing!! Respect and blessings to you and your wife!
Thank you very much!
WOW! That took a lot of nerve! That was a big angry bear! Glad Cindy was there with the gun ready.
Me too! Alone, would have been really scary! I kept thinking of that movie "The Revenant"!!
HA! Now THAT would be fun to see!
Man you got solid steel balls. I've never even heard of anything like that. Thanks for taking us on this trip.
Thank you Ron!
Good job my friend. I wasn't sure how you would ever do it but you gotter done.
Me neither! I've always liked long spring traps, but I don't think I could have gotten them off. These coil spring traps made it possible.
Wow!!! My hats off to both of you after that. Don’t know if I could have done it. Glad to see everything worked out ok and you weren’t hurt.
