    Liz is both stunning and spectacular in this movie. Just a complete and total joy to watch. Her voice so cool and confident, yet overflowing with emotion and longing. This scene is one of the greatest. Full of tension, waiting to be released. Steam building. Movie art at its finest. Thank you, Liz!

    I think we are losing something with each generation. Some firmness, strength or thickness. I do not know how to say it properly.
    But a guy like Paul Newman has something about him that for example Ryan Gosling or DiCaprio do not have. He is not as polished, or physically weak or something.
    And Elizabeth Taylor is just gorgeous. Like really, your jaw drops when you look at her. Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie are great for our generation in their own right, but they too seem to be missing something Taylor has.
    And Taylor and Newman looked like this in an age when plastic surgery was not as common as it is today.
    We are getting weaker and weaker, because our lives are becoming more and more comfortable or something like that.

      I somewhat agree with you, but its also all about perception. its easy to look at classic film through rose colored glasses. I personally think this generation's actors have an astounding eye for work involving idiosyncratic mannerisms, and facial work. That being said people like Newman, Brando, Peck, and Redford have a kind of raw charisma and presences that can't and hasn't been replicated to this day.
      I really think the difference lies in the evolution of the art form. older movies, this movie in particular, tend to be replicating a more theatrical style.

    You rarely have this in films. When Elizabeth is speaking your eyes stays on her, when Paul speaks your eyes goes towards him. These two great actors went head to head in this film and neither outshined the other. Paul was always critically acclaimed as an actor but Elizabeth was always having to prove herself due to her scandalous private life and her beauty. She deserved more credit as an actor.

  • @MonsieurRondu

    Interesting about the evolution of movies. In that time, movies were much more about story and character development with long scenes of people talking. Much closer to the age of live theater where props were just that - something in the background to prop up or support the main action. Now props have morphed into CG which has taken over dialogue and plot. Well, welcome to the 21st century. I think we have gained in slam dunk value but lost something in the translation.

    • @PiCheZvara
      @PiCheZvara 8 років тому +1

      Movies were about props all the time. Studios always wanted to deliver huge spectacles to viewers, no matter the time period. Ben Hur, King Kong, Cleopatra, Towering Inferno, etc.
      It is just that in 1958, they had less tools at their disposal so they were forced to be more creative. And one movie like Cat on a hot tin roof is not representative of the entire era.
      There are a lot of great movies coming out today that are about story and character, you just have to look. The volume of movies coming out is bigger of course and the amount of crap is therefore bigger as well, but lets not idealize the past too much. It was always about money and big attractions for the public.

    • @jerramy
      @jerramy 8 років тому

      I guess you're right, but I do feel like I used to enjoy movies much more years ago. Now I feel lucky if I can find one or two a year that are worth watching. Maybe we were more unsophisticated and innocent back then, and easily impressed, or maybe I'm just getting old and not moving on with the times.

    • @PiCheZvara
      @PiCheZvara 8 років тому

      jerramy Yup. Its getting older. Thats all. When younger, you were more easily impressed. Older, you have seen a lot of movies and a lot of crap.
      I recently watched the new Ninja Turtles. I thought it was crap and that the old movies were better. Then I watched one of the old movies here and thought: "Damn, this is even worse than the new one."
      Nostalgia clouds rational thinking.
      If you wanna see a good new movie though, I suggest Nice guys with Gosling and Crowe. A good film.

    At one point the full movie was here. I usually catch it somewhere on a Cable or Network channel. I'm going to buy the DVD, I must. I can watch it over and over, the performances are so great. With Ms. Taylor passing, she is the last of the original cast. If anyone can find the book, it's really worth the read. Surprisingly there is more to Big Daddy than meets the .eye and how he came about that Plantation. Tennessee Williams was genius, I loved his hot smoky plays...

    It's not that he doesn't love her - he does. It's that she doesn't physically turn him on. He likes guys - "hard" instead of "soft". (Read the book.)
    He made the same mistake so many gay guys do - going along to "get along" instead of being themselves.
    In a way, society made BOTH these people victims .... from prejudice.
