SUPERBOOTH 2024: Sound Workshop - Wiggler Expressive Mono Synth

- At Superbooth 2024, we met up with Chris at Sound Workshop who revealed his unique *Wiggler*, a digital monosynth with a single morphing oscillator that you can blend with white noise, and a keybed that can wiggle up and down as well as left to right. Chris describes it as a MiniMoog for expressive synth nerds, with pressure giving loudness expression and wiggling for vibrato. The small keybed gives you one octave of a selectable scale, and was inspired, Chris tells us, by old flutes. There is also an attack decay envelope called Strike which adds a little harmonic thwack to the start of the sound.
Wiggler has MIDI and 5 CV outputs for each of the expressive parameters so you can wiggle away on any synth you like.

I really wonder what is about the Duduk on the table right next to the speakert??
@@KirkMonteux a lot of aspects of Wiggler were inspired by duduk, especially the note layout. So I had it on the table to help explain the note layout
@@sound.workshop Wow I just started learning the Duduk while trying to mimic the expression of this instrument with Osmose but no chance I have to keep learning the Duduk
This is probably my favourite discovery at Superbooth. I hope he's ready to produce a lot of these....
Had the privledge of having Chris over to try out the wiggler at my studio and must say, this thing is so special, unique, and inspiring . Chris is also the most wonderful chap out . Wishing all the success to him!

I clicked this as soon as I saw wiggler; I remember that original "I made a thing, is this a thing? It's pretty cool" video, Great to see the progress Chris!
There were two points I forgot to say that I wanted to share:
1) I think expressive controllers are all so unique that each one needs a synthesizer that’s designed to compliment it. That’s why it’s a bit frustrating to plug your expressive controller into a synth that’s designed for a piano shaped controller. For example, most synths don’t have a pressure -> filter knob. So the synth interface on Wiggler is designed to compliment the Wiggler keybed.
2) Small self contained synths like MiniMoog and MicroBrute are such a fun package but sometimes the limited feature set doesn’t stay interesting for a long time. The expressive controller is a nice compliment for a such a synth because it stays fun and interesting for a long time, there’s so much to explore in the expressive playing
I tried it at superbooth, it is a brilliant instrument. It is probably the one I fell in love with at Superbooth.
This is one of a kind. Personally I like synthesizer music to be static and cold but I get the inclination. Brilliant solution!
"melodies with emotion" and "minimoog for expressive synth nerds" are great! Had a good conversation with Chris on the way into the event one day. Smart guy and a great idea. Looking forward to trying one in the future.
Hey Ben! Thanks for chatting on the way in. Ya I think minimoog for expressive synth nerds is the best elevator pitch. In another video I accidentally said it’s like a microkorg, which is the opposite of what I intend!

How far it has come since that video of him at the outdoor table. Love the design... looks like something from the movie DUNE and love the 0-Coast reference. I was thinking of getting a Touché, but this would also fit the bill nicely... including its own synth!
The outdoor table was even a pretty far step up from the original prototypes! So glad to see this getting steam!

Excellent design and probably the best lead sounds I've heard from this year's superbooth. Simple and classic. Plus as a controller it's easily expandable. I wonder if the mystery feature is perhaps a port for additional waveforms and FX. Imagine if you could add open source stuff like Mutable Instruments algorithms. Plaits inside this would be nice.

Is this MPE compatible, ie could you use this to control an MPE VST in the box like say pigments or phase plant?
Wiggler guy here, actually you don’t need MPE. MPE is only needed for polyphonic expressive instruments where each note has its own pitch bend and expression values. Wiggler is mono so it can be expressive over regular MPE. It will still work fine with MPE synths though.
Ahh, everything seemed so great until he announced the price... 🥴 I get that great designs such as this need to be compensated accordingly (production costs etc) and that expression/control is very fresh and also user-friendly, but after all it's mono, digital and probably one-voice (?), so 850$ seems a lot. I hope the mysterious hidden feature proves me wrong, but I think it would sell more if it was something around the 200-500$ price range.
Gimme now. The issue that I see is that we have amazing controllers like this and the Erae but the synths that they could control don't give us access to envelope/pressure control parameters. Pitch and mod have been around for as long as I can remember. We live in a funny time where controllers are more advanced than the sound engines they attach to.
