  • This is a seaside holiday village, with a number of facilities for visitors, but it’s also a residential village too. It’s not a place that’s constantly overrun with tourists, which means in places it feels much more like a “normal” village if you’ll excuse the turn of phrase. It has some prominent landmarks, most notably a six-storey tower millbuilt in the 1830s
It’s recorded in the Domesday Book as Caretuna, a name probably derived from the Viking name Kari. It formed part of the Half Hundred of Lothingland, and had a population of around 21. It included a village which no longer exists - Newton - which was lost to coastal erosion during the medieval period. Its loss would result in a narrow strip of land which is now part of Norfolk, because it was transferred to Hopton in 1974.
It used to be accessible via rail. There was a station which opened in 1903 on the former Yarmouth-Lowestoft railway - the remains of which can still be seen. The station closed in 1970 and the station building is now used as a private residence.
A man named Jeremiah James Colman was responsible for building this in 1874. The Colman family became famous thanks to Colman’s Mustard, produced in Norwich. The Colmans also built the school, found on The Close. They lived in a house called Clyffe House which no longer stands due to coastal erosion, despite them investing £70,000 for a sea wall
In all this is a lovely village overlooking the sea with quite a storied past. Its name is CORTON.
