- 'The Secrets Of Temple Church | Home Of The Knights Templar'
It's one of Britain's most fascinating buildings, boasting nearly nine centuries of history. Temple Church was built by the holy order of the Knights Templar in the 12th century. The iconic round tower was consecrated by Heraclius, the Patriarch of Jerusalem in 1185. The design of the round tower was intended to resemble the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
History Hit's Alice Loxton heads to central London to explore the secrets of Temple Church. She gets inside the tiny penitential cell where Walter Bachelor was supposedly starved to death on the orders of the Master of the Temple. She discovers how the Temple was rebuilt after one of the most devastating German air raids of the Blitz during World War Two. And she even has a go on the church's famous organ, which was used for the score of the 2014 Hollywood blockbuster, Interstellar.

Alice is filming a series looking at the secret history of some of Britain's best known landmarks! 😀 What locations would you like to see us visit?
St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster
Fountains Abbey
Glasgow Cathedral.
As I've mentioned before, I'm from New Zealand and am not likely to ever see these places in person, so just keep on doing what you're doing. Fantastic 👍👍
What a great presenter! Osborne house here on the Isle of Wight might have some interesting secrets, plus its a fun day out!
This woman's enthusiasm is infectious
OMG...I lived in London for 6 months in 2000 and HOW DID I MISS THIS CHURCH? I'm kicking myself right now. Nicely done!
I'm 40 born and raised just outside of London and went to university in the Temple area for 4 years, I just visited it today. It's very well hidden.
Absolutely adore Alice's way of presenting! You can just tell how excited and passionate she is about the subject!
I was about to say the same, she's very pleasant.
I agree she’s good. But dude she’s an actress
@@matts5247 A, according to everything I can find about her, she's a historian, author, and presenter, nothing about being an actor, and B, even if she was an actor, so what?
@@matts5247 Okay, I don't see how that matters :) Doesn't change the fact I really like her way of presenting!
Enthusiastic, even if I had to look up a couple of the words she used lol. The is an area in my home town of Bristol called Temple, I became interested in it when I was a bus driver and explored it a little with my now departed mate, and a couple of times with my daughter and wife. There are some pubs and eateries around the area if anyone ever fancies doing it themselves. I can't drink anymore because of some serious medication I'm on dues to an unexpected illness, so have one for me!
Our greatest Knight William Marshall is buried there. I live in his old manor of Caversham, Berkshire. A very interesting man who had an interesting life 🏴

Alice is a natural presenter, a worthy successor to Lucy Worsley. I search out her videos as she makes history even more fascinating.
Love Lucy, so knowledgeable in many areas of history.
What d'you mean "successor"? Has Worsley retired?
Yeah she's ok I guess, but I could do better (if I wanted) and that's not me saying that (as I am very humble despite my vast natural talents), other people say that about me. They say I am a natural presenter and basically good at everything I do.
My father sang in Temple Church choir. He was at school nearby - the City of London School. He was evacuated during the war to Marlborough College where he and other boys had many adventures. He was taught to play the organ by Thalben Ball.
Fascinating. Temple Church is
Somewhere that I have always wanted to visit.
The Knights Templar were persecuted out of existence because those to whom they had lent vast amounts of money were unable to pay it back.
What an amazing historical survivor.
Once again its very important to remember that ancient people didn't live in a black and white world, they there surrounded by colors. Very interesting video and great presentation!
The first place i visit every time i'm in london. Temple Church is MY place to be, relaxe, talk to god and to remember and honor William Marshal and the knights Templar.

⚘Tough to find Temple Church in the maze of buildings, but so worth the search. Amazing.
Awesome, informative and humorous. I loved being at the Temple Church last year. A beautifully presented history of deliberate and unintended consequences.
I'm very pleased that Lord Jesus Christ is at the top of the leadlight window. It would be interesting to reveal the original windows stories prior to the fires.
🤝🍞
Wonderful. Thank you so much. William Marshall: such a great man. He repelled the last foreign invader on English soil (Louis VIII). Fascinating to learn that the barons confronted King John here. That the bones showed a physically enormous man. His great strength contributed to his never having been defeated in tounaments. Your finale with the Temple Garden rose scene elocuting Shakespeare just blew me away. I was spellbound by your presentation.
So wonderful to see a most beautiful lady host a documentary of my ancestors the Templars, i thank you, Alice.
A lot of BRITS are related to the KNIGHTS TEMPLAR & ROYALTY including me..

i walked through the Temple many times as a young bloke, i wasn't aware of the Charles Dickens quote about the Temple, but it always amazed me just how quiet it was.
As usual, a great video, thank you.
Call me a total nerd, but that mock keyboard work was the most goofy in the cutest way possible. I applaud you. You ever need a bassist, I have a air guitar in my closet.
Loved this one! My childhood bestie was married in this church believe it or not! A Yorkshireman marrying a Yorkshire lass but they were eligible to marry here because the bride's mother was a Queens Counsel at the time. My husband and I couldn't attend as we had moved to Australia but we did spend a day with said bestie+wife in and around the church when we did end up spending some time in the UK. Such a memorable day and the strong feeling of history in that part of London is, I feel, surpassed only by the Tower of London! Thanks for another great vid!
The Temple Church organist in the 70s and 80s was the venerable George Thalben Ball. A grand old gentleman.
I have read several books about the knights Templar but don’t consider myself knowledgeable. I live in the US and would love to go to London and see places like this. I doubt I will ever make it there but if I did it would be great to have this young lady as a tour guide. She is obviously very knowledgeable and her personality and enthusiasm is contagious. Thanks for the great video.
I live a couple of hours from London and am fascinated by it's history, I've read a stack of books on it and like to visit every year for a couple of days to explore different parts of it. There's an endless amount of things to see in London. I love the riverside areas east of The Tower, Wapping and Limehouse (for the maritime history, Execution Dock etc) and Greenwich on the south bank. I need to book a couple of nights away this summer!
Can't believe the production quality of thse documentaries. No doubt the best history themed channel in UA-cam.
Alice is neat. I've seen a few shows now, and Alice realy makes the show ! She educates us and makes it fun ! Cheers Alice. Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿
I was a chorister at Temple for five years. Mixed memories, but the architecture and history still uplifts to this day.
were you fiddled with?
Oh Alice ..love your commentaries
William Marshall ...the greatest Knight of All ...served 4 Kings ...and the Templars ...my family joined those scouts 🌄
That was BRILLIANT. You are deliciously animated and your presentation so well done. I simply loved it.

This is a great Presentation of History, engrossing because Alice is interacting and really getting involved in what she sees. I actually never knew about this part of London, my favourite city after Venice, so will visit one day - thank you
Don't bother it's a CESSPIT now sadly
Alice throws those roses with amazing authority.
Thanks to Alice's intoxicating passion, I've got a list of landmarks to visit. I'd like to see you guys cover Belvoir Castle.
Thank you Alice. I spent a whole day there in 2017, visiting from Australia. I felt a deep connection with the place. Well done.
No doubt you were a Templar in a previous life.
"Since then, Lord (didn't catch his name)'s organ has impressed many a musician".
Ooh err missus!
A perfect balance of reverence and levity. Really engaging and interesting.
Appreciate that!
Let's be honest, we all just came here for Alice. Keep on rocking!
When visiting The Mall/Buckingham Palace have a look on the map for Mark Mason's Hall that is just around the corner. If your interested in the Knight's Templar this beautiful building is the main meeting hall throughout the western hemisphere for many Templar orders.
If that's indeed the organ that made the score for Interstellar, then that truly is the most magnificent organ in the world, holy moly that soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece.
Seconded!
Indeed Hans Zimmer recorded Interstellar film score here, see; ua-cam.com/video/pcaOVCnsYJM/v-deo.html

Fabulous. Love her intelligence, manner, looks and presentation.
Alice is so posh , fun , intelligent and elegant - four winning qualities for a presenter !
Alice's narration is flawless! She has a natural voice for this, very well done HH and Alice.
You're a natural all round and beautiful to boot, Alice.
Beautiful??? 🤨
Read about William marshal, quite the amazing man.
I think I could listen to your beautifully spoken historic lessons, which I should add are filled with joy, and laughter and of course, much humor, thanks all to you dear Alice. I can not wait to share your next adventure with you. Until then, bye de bye.
Alice is bloody marvellous, 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Loved this vid! Tom Asbridge taught me about William Marshall at uni, so this video brought back a ton of good memories 🤓
Alice playing the organ was one of the funniest moments of any history doc I've ever seen 😆
What was number one on my list of sites to see in England? Temple Church. What was closed for cleaning the entire time I was in England?
Yep!
So I went to Clerkenwell and the Knights of St John's HQ! Brilliant time. Highly recommend it!
Excellent video! Very interesting and well presented. Finally, a historian who talks about history in the past tense.
Alice's lively, engaging and intelligent personality really adds value to her UA-cam lectures.
I haven't visited the Temple for a good few years now and her enthusiasm has made me want to pay a return trip.
I wanted to leave her a 👍 like but the button isn't working!!!
Your enthusiasm is very attractive.
Always look forward to Alice's presentations!
Excellent channel!
This is great, and I think I may have a crush on Alice now! She's safe, I live 5000 miles away. My compliments, all the way around to this video.
Thank you very much for taking the time of history. It was for me a pleasure. Have a nice night 🌛.
With best and lovely wishes from the deep of my heart 💘💓💗💞💕💝💖🌠🌌☄️.

This was really interesting, thank you. Very well presented by Alice, I love her quirky style! Keep up the great work, HH!
So much color & passion expressed just in the original church building. No wonder they inspire attention.
Love your passion and enthusiasm for history and your unique way of presenting it. Keep up the interesting and informative presentations and keep being you. Goodonya from Australia.
I started to watch Alice for her beautiful voice and accent , but I end up learning UK medieval history she is facetious and enthusiastic ,
I enjoyed the part where she started to play the piano 🎹🎹😅
I just found your videos. Love it. You’re great at what you do. Thank You 😊❤️❤️💕💕
Very interesting, cracking young lass who obviously loves history.👍🏴
Well done! Truly a great video filled with fantastic tid bits of history...Thank you!
Great video, please do one on Mark Masons Hall. It was the main meeting place of the Knights Templar outside of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. It’s just off The Mall, near Buck Palace ❤
Excellent video
Great information about the church ⛪️
I'm taking a stroll down there later today to see an old buddy - might pop in now you've inspired me!
Thank you Alice...this is outstanding ....I love it❤
You are so welcome!
@@HistoryHit If want to know, who the Templars really were, and where they went to, then watch video "The Swiss Beast - Home of the Devil; Part 1 The Nazi-Templars" on channel Giureh. The French King was right: "the Knights Templars are an evil bunch, that needs to be burnt".
@@SuiSSe-Torture-Prisonniers-CH The KNIGHTS TEMPLAR didn't deserve to be burnt alive what the hell are you on about?? Have you been reading & Watching the fake crap again?? SMH
As far as I know, the only Underground station which shares its name with a Paris Métro station is Temple - the one in Paris is also named after the Knights Templar.
There is anotherone : city . In Paris : cité.
First Doco I've seen with Alice presenting, ... most enjoyable.
Thank you for your UA-cam video. It was both entertaining and informative. I have for many years wanted to visit but never have. Having watched this I now must make an extra effort to go there .
Wonderful to watch and so interesting.
Fascinating.. Love history.
Excellent presentation.
Here , here Alice! Bravo! Well done . Good history and good Shakespeare
How has this beautiful and clearly knowledgeable presenter not been snapped up by tv?! SO much better at telling a story than the awful mediocrity we have to suffer. Thank you Alice, and I look forward to more of your films.
I think these wonderful channels on youtube Are our new TV! :)
Another great video from History Hit! I am totally enamored with Ms. Loxton's witty narration. Her energy is infectious!
Love your work, Thank you !
She’s awesome. Glad I watched it
Thank you for the interesting and amusing presentation an your infectious enthusiasm. I used to work in nearby Chancery Lane and knew very little about Temple Church.
Awesome! How lucky she was to be able to go up to the clerestory. But why'd she throw those beautiful roses away at the end? 😉🌹
Alice has great acoustics 😂
Beautiful video! Nice to see 🙂
👍
Really cool to see this, as I'm reading a history of the Templers . Very interesting!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for your reply! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos 😍

She's wonderful, I loved this.
Great vid! Thank you so much!
Loved this!
What a refreshingly animated and funny history lesson. I'm going to return to temple church and reflect on this brilliant video. Thanks Alice.
Really enjoy your videos Alice. So fun and informative.
really well done
There's a round Templar church near where I live in Essex. St John's in Little Maplestead.
Nice Hans Zimmer reference, though it's a pity he didn't use Alice for the score.
Yeah he missed out there 😂
I loved visiting this church in 2019. But it is quite difficult to find and I was so happy when I came through a long archway and there it was! The mosaic tiles were exquisite.
I had the same experience in searching for it which was readily remedied by asking around once nearby.
I been to the temple today. Such a calmness and good energy 🙂especially in the front of the altar and under the circular dome.
Pleasure to watch and listen her presentations. Very gifted.
Adore anything Knights Templar...
Amazing video, presenter is really passionate and enthusiastic about this period. Also seem like she's fun.
Alice could talk me through the history of bin bags and I would still be absolutely enthralled! She is a born presenter! 🧑🏫
delightful
This girl is so interesting and funny. I wish I had a history teacher like her. Engrossing yet funny. Loved it.
I heard that William the Marshall survived his action packed life unscathed and it took the Luftwaffe to blow his foot off (well those of his effigy!).
lovely Alice thanks so much
This was awesome. Informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work.
OMG this was amazing
Alice is so much fun. I haven't been here for years. I really need to visit again x
You should!
You’re a little keyboard solo is cute I love your sense of humor
