As always awesome presentation and great detail. Love your presentations Hollis however, I wait anxiously for Nancy to say "have a blessed day". God Bless you Both!
Part of my container garden is nine 5-gallon buckets. I used a one-inch hole saw to drill drainage holes, like you did. I didn't want my soil to spill out of the holes, and I sure didn't want pests burrowing up through the holes, so I cut high quality landscape fabric to fit the inside bottom of each bucket, then added my soil and continued on with my little container garden journey. I did the same with the large storage tub containers. I've been very happy with that set-up. It's just a little patio container garden, but it makes me happy. For bigger dreams, I watch your channel! I love every single garden thing you do. And every chicken thing also! 🐓🐣🐥🥬🍅🥦🥒🥕🥔
I absolutely love how through you are and your seedling and growing tables are enviable. Thank You So Very Much for taking the time to go step by step.
I never get tired of watching your video, I can sit many hours and watching it. Your video, you have explaining very clearly and step by step. I loved so much, wish you continue to post more videos for us to see. God bless you and your family, also all the best of luck to your family too 😘😘😘
This is my favourite salad green because it stays crunchy longer than the others. I love the heart of the butterhead so I'm glad y'all get to enjoy that. Though if I were to grow them at home in my tiny balcony I might have to sacrifice the heart in order to get more leaves for more salads. I love these progression videos and I'm glad to have them back. They also make me want to rewatch the other progression and cooking videos which I have already watched many times.
My husband was stationed in Korea. I fiund a recipe for Kimchi and it was so easy! He was amazed and said it tasted like what he had in Korea. I amazed myself, lol!
Nancy has a bunch of kimchi videos and several Korean side dish videos on our channel you husband would probably like. We thank you husband for his service to our country 🇺🇸
Hollis and Nancy.... I somehow stumbled on your channel as I am doing some research on how to grow my own food. This year is my first year of trying. I am having some success however I have made alot of mistakes. I have watched about 4 of your videos so far tonight. All I can say as a rookie Gardner is your videos have educated more than any others I have seen! Thank you both for taking the time to create this type of video. I know creating this took alot of time and effort! Your videos have truly educated me! I was getting a touch discouraged but not anymore. Thanks again , be well, and god bless!
Thank you so much for this I am having to wait till end of month to try and start my seeds it’s still way to hot here in southern Texas so excited to get my stuff going for my fall harvest
Oh how beautiful that lettuce is! Hollis and Nancy, did you work in the food growing business for a living? Or, perhaps just always been drawn to gardening? I’ve always loved it. It’s so rewarding to plant a seed, watch it come up and grow, and be able to harvest it and eat it!! It’s a God thing, for sure! Keep up the videos. I love watching y’all. Blessings always!!❤️❤️❤️
Welcome to the family Michelle. So glad you like our videos. I admit, there isn’t much on TV to watch so we try to make our videos as relaxing and fun to watch as possible for everyone. If you like Nancy’s cooking, stay tuned. She has a bunch of new cooking videos coming out very soon
The hardest part of planting in FL when moving here from other parts of the country is knowing when to start with the heat here. My biggest question is do you have any problems with bugs?
This was awesome to watch, informative as I am just starting my first ever home grown vegetables in pots. It was great to see each stage of the lettuce growing. Thanks very much for sharing
Thank you for creating and sharing your videos. I have learned so much from you. Black kow is magic too. Nancy's cooking and recipe videos are so sweet to watch. I enjoy watching her pick the ingredients she needs and put things together. You two are awesome and thank you.
Thank you. I’m even further down in Florida and I have never even tried growing lettuce. I was wondering when to go grow them. I can see you started the seeds in October, I am going to start them later like you said.
I'm so glad to find your channel! It's my favorite channel so far! I love that you show the growth progress. I'm curious, you put that lettuce under shade, but you also said to give it 4 hours of full sun. Do you move all the containers out into the sun every morning?
I live in Suriname where its very hot/warm. I grow mine in the shade and harvest on time. I dont have any problem. The ones on the balcony get bright day light but no sum directly on them. Those are also good but just need more water. I just the product that he does like the bloodmeel and I sen them grow amazing. Hope this helps for the ones living in similar weather as me.
I enjoy your videos so much! I did grow big onions for my first time last year thanks to your video on onions.❤️I grew up in the garden but my parents never grew the large onions and no one I knew did, we always grew bunching onions,(green onions) I guess education was lacking in our area till now!❤️❤️
I live in the Caribbean extremely hot and humid The lettuce bolts very quickly also problem with the caterpillar’s but started growing Curly endive The caterpillar’s hasn’t touched the endive growing fantastic I planted it in June from seed it’s a bitter a green taste great in salad
I live in Suriname so the same kind of weather. I grow mine in the shade and harvest on time. I dont have any problem. The ones on the balcony get bright day light but no sum directly on them. Those are also good but just need more water. Hope this helps.
Awesome video... I love your garden setup! I'm gonna grow all my lettuces this way next year- I'll have plenty of left-over buckets by then. I love the idea of being able to move these lil' pots around into better lighting _and_ into the shade when needed.
Since I am a visual learner, I appreciate your step by step videos! It is encouraging to see how you do this butter head lettuce and would like to give it a try! Living in zone 5 I believe it would be best to wait until spring! We got our first snowfall a couple days ago!🥶
Thank you for sharing! I'm a beginner gardener and this helps alot..I've had trouble with my seedlings getting leggy even after adjusting the light..don't know why its leggy and I've tried it twice. If you could please let me know what I'm doing wrong..I would appreciate it. Blessings to you and your family. Oh and I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Thank you for your help.
Hollis I love your videos they are awesome, I have some bibb lettuce I am starting today. Have you ever tried any lettuce done hydroponic before? Pretty good stuff.
Thank you both for the inspirational and educational videos and for being so good to share. I have learned quite a lot from you. I have dabbled with square foot gardening, used both pumped and Kratky hydroponics, and tried Mittleider gardening over the years. I learned that every one of those methods worked, but in the end, simplicity works best for me... good growing medium, regular plant nutrition supplementation, and consistent watering. Vaya con Dios.
Hi Mr. Hollis, I tried your old method of seed starting and so far it has worked great. Is there a reason you changed your method? You used to leave water in the tray and sprinkle with cinnamon and spray tray with Neem oil.
Wow! It's been awhile since I saw your vids......when did you start a homestead? Did you move? Are you still in the southern hemisphere or move more north? How exciting! I'm wanting to grow lettuce soon but it's still too hot here in northwest Florida. May have to wait for October. I like the one you did but I really want red romaine. Keep up the great work!
Is there a reason you don't just put the seeds in the buckets to start with? Ease of care or just that you don't have enough shady area to start them in?
I definitely won’t put lettuce in such a giant container. I would put it in a container 1/10 the volume. Such a waste of soil. But I am guessing there must be a reason he is doing it and probably works for him

Did this last week and thank you so much your method worked awesome I got 30 buckets filled almost done
Thank you for your paced explanation...watching your videos is almost meditative in addition to be inspiring.

I am in Fl too. I put my lettuce under shade cloth to keep that direct sun light off of my seeds.
That accuracy with the blood meal.... I would have had most of it outside of the container from that height.
👍👍Thanks for sharing with us Hollis and Nancy, you’re doing a great job around there. Be safe and catch you later!
Thank you for being such a great place to visit on UA-cam. You are so encouraging to us beginners. Blessings to you guys!

I lightly water once per day in the morning only
Perfect timing! Starting my lettuce seeds soon.

Thanks for the link, Nancy. God bless you!
Thanks for letting us know where you got it. I have used their May Queen, also tasty. My container lettuce just germinated.
Yum. That lettuce looks yummy.
Thanks for sharing....always a blessing.....
yes! just what I've been looking for. I'm new to all this but am starting many seeds outdoors
Beautiful bouquet of lettuce!

Hi Love your faith and how organized you guys are! I was told most lettuce likes light to germinate.
Beautiful lettuce. I’m going to try that lettuce!
Yall are one of my favorites channels to watch and I have learned a lot from you. Florida panhandle.
God bless you and your family❤️
@@HollisNancysHomestead Thank you! Same to yall!
Hey Hollis this angel from Miami hope all is well quick question can I germinate my seedling outdoor
I was just thinking about this!
Hi Mr. Hollis, I tried your old method of seed starting and so far it has worked great. Is there a reason you changed your method? You used to leave water in the tray and sprinkle with cinnamon and spray tray with Neem oil.
That is the method I used for starting seeds indoors. The method shown on this video is how I start my seeds outdoors 👍
Now I got my video on. Wonderful! Thanks!
First ive seen of your videos. Thank you for the info and your down home feel💜just subscribed
Welcome to the family Stephanie ❤️❤️🐶
I wanna watch this video all day

They moved from Virginia to Florida awhile ago.
They moved (I think) 2 years ago. You can go back and watch the videos. Look for the “Homestead 2.0” playlist.
I LOVE butter lettuce! Thanks for the great video. I might try to grow some myself.
We love it too. It is such a good tasting salad when picked fresh from the garden❤️
Did you plant the lettuce as deep as the spinach? Appreciate your videos.
What date did you actually plant the seeds?
Is there a reason you don't just put the seeds in the buckets to start with? Ease of care or just that you don't have enough shady area to start them in?
Great question! I was wondering the same thing.
I believe it has to do with the amount of water and food you'd have to provide
Could be a germination thing. He has control of only putting successful starts in the ground.
I definitely won’t put lettuce in such a giant container. I would put it in a container 1/10 the volume. Such a waste of soil. But I am guessing there must be a reason he is doing it and probably works for him
