There needs to be more multiplayer battle Mario games out there. Another great one is the Mario Vs. Luigi mode in New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS. If you liked Mario Bros. on GBA, then you’ll definitely like that one as well. :)
I resented the one in NSMB until a hack over a decade after release properly made the game co-op as originally intended. Now I enjoy it.
Though, I still resent the one in SM64DS for the aforesaid reason regarding NSMB.
Absolutely loved NSMB battle mode! So much fun to build up momentum and run through those looping stages. If you miss each other, just go round another lap.
Pretty sure an online Mario & Luigi already exist

That does look like a lot of fun. I'm susprised Nintendo never considered a multitap version of it in the SNES days, as their own multiplayer offerings on the console were pretty slim.
They did toy around with it as 2 player in Super Mario All Stars, but it was not too popular then. Perhaps if it was multitap compatible and offered 4 player mayhem, it would have been a Smash (pun intended).

Blue Mario actually has the colors of Stanley the Bugman, the not-Mario from Donkey Kong 3! Specifically his modern palette, best visible in his Super Smash Bros. Melee trophy. That's a really nice callback!
Legitimately one of the most fun multiplayer games I've played on NSO.

Blue Mario must have been the Inspiration for SMG4.

@@supermarioplushbros156 Not really since we have Stanley the Bugman and the Wrecking Man/Crew. It's just a coincidence. I would've chose blue Mario because it's my favorite color. Saying blue Mario is SMG4 is like saying all Yorkies are Jojo Siwa's dog. (I'm very serious, there are kids out there that literally said this.)

Great memories playing this on the school bus in the early 2000’s, link cables going across the seats lol. I believe you only needed one cartridge as well which felt crazy at the time
yes, you can use a single-pak, but you'd only be able to poay the battle mode, not the classic mode
nowadays you can't even get a complete game on one cartrige

It has returned to some degree. It’s called NSMB Online. You can see some videos of it on my channel
It’s not that it didn’t occur to me to play multiplayer games on GBA, it’s more that you had to persuade other people to willingly play these games with you. That’s why abolishing link cables was for the best, to remove that hindrance 😊

I only ever played this single player as a kid but remember seeing the recolors in an instruction booklet I had. As a child, I naturally thought that Yellow Mario was Wario and came to the conclusion that Blue Mario was an evil Luigi named "Bluigi" (I didn't know about Waluigi) and that he was Wario's brother. I believed this for years, lol

Funnily enough you don't even need more that one cartridge to do it. They all have Single pack play for it.
Seriously the GBA's multiplayer modes are some of my favorite multiplayer Mario experiences out there.

I played this game a ton, back in middle school. I even came up with names for the other two Mario Bros. I know one of them (I think the yellow one?) was Lenny, so let's pretend the other one was named Carl.
It's been so long that I can't remember.
I did manage to play this awesome multi-player when I had a link cable for our family's GBAs. It's such a fun mode, especially when it's 1v1 with all the power-ups.
And the fact that any five of the Mario games that have the awesome Mario Bros remake are compatible with each other is just the icing on the cake! The only other franchise that has done this kind of cross-compatible multi-player is Bomberman via a few of the Bomberman DS games. Bomberman Story, Bomberman 2, and the DSi Ware Bomberman Blitz can connect with each other via the multi-player mode! This is because of the Bomberman Battle Pack 2 engine the games use.

While he’s not playable, he can also be seen as a tennis official in Mario Tennis 64. There are many gameplay videos with him that are found on this platform.
I'm surprised less people played this who grew up with the GBA, I played Mario Bros multiplayer almost as much as Pokemon back in the day as all of my friends had a Mario GBA game. Happy that NSO is bringing back GBA multiplayer, probably the best reason to get the expanded service. Hope they bring back Four Swords and Kirby and The Amazing Mirror!

I remember going to London with my family and my 3 other cousins and I had the middle seats of the plane and we all had this for the gba. This was so much fun and great memories.
I loved this game as a kid too. Me and a few of my siblings friends used to play this using my link cable

Found out about how great GBA Mario Bros multiplayer was during summer camps as a kid, very quickly became The Go To game during breaks over Gen 3 Pokemon or Super Circuit. It took the DS coming out for that to finally get replaced by Mario 64 DS's wacky battle mode and Tetris DS.
And yeah, the stunned Bowser sprite from this game is one of my favorite Bowser images it's so beautifully silly
Green Mario is my favorite and I had this in my youth with a friend. He loved Mario a lot.
I wish Nintendo would dump more Game Boy games. No one ever seems to acknowledge that there's only about 6 games for each of the Game Boy services. I can fire off a list of about 30 absolute bangers for each console, without even trying. We really need more.
1st Player: Regular Mario
2nd Player: Luigi-styled Mario
3rd Player: Gold Mario
4th Player: SMG4

Used to play this with my siblings as a kid. I always found the trashcan amusing.
Me and my brother played up to over level 100 through a link cable between a GBA and a GameCube with the GBA player back in the day. I had no idea the game could support more than 2 players!
This game was always used to settle arguments as a kid. 1v1 battle mode
I remember the GBA E Reader. One of the NES Game Card packs was the NES Port of the Mario Bros Arcade Game with the original shell creeper sprites. The Shell Creepers were the predecessor to the Koopa Troopas. Sadly that one didn't have the two player mode. Most of the E-Reader Card Ports of NES Games didn't have that option

This is awesome, I didn't even know this was possible. I've always loved this on the GBA, and play it a ton on the Wii U VC, albeit only in single player on the Wii U. I've always wanted to play this on the big screen in multiplayer, and I guess now it's possible on the Switch! Unfortunately I don't have the NSO expansion pack. Really wish they did a mod to the Wii U VC version so you could play coop local multiplayer
I used to play this game with my 2 older brothers in the car, it was the only game we could all play together but MAN we really had to make sure we didn’t move or the link cables would fail 😂
I played it on snes with friends back in the days (all stars -> smb 3 -> battle game).
Never had a link cable or friends so let me tell ya I was absolutely tortured by the back of the box showing Bowser appearing in coop Mario Bros. Still played the hell out of the game but never got to do any of that stuff. Thanks for showing what could’ve been!

Was excited to play multiplayer for the first time since I didn't have friends or a link cable as a kid. Was floored when no joke, p2 is a literal green Mario and not Luigi. That actually justifies that old bit about Luigi being a pallette swap.

I think I’m suffering from a Mandela effect here because I swear Yellow Mario had purple pants to reference Wario.
The prerelease did have purple/yellow Mario as player 3, which is probably why you remember that, although his cap and shirt were purple rather than his pants. Memory is weird!

Theres actually a rom hack of this on snes (4 player smb) that works with a multitap its pretty fun
I have often enjoyed playing this in 2 player mode both coop and battle. A favorite dick move was to throw someone into the can and then stand on the lid making it so they stay in a bit longer.
Played this variant of Mario Bros a lot as a kid. Revisited it a while back, and still enjoyed it. Think I was even able to reach level 64 on my latest attempt.
Haven't gotten to play the multiplayer as much, but when I did, it was great. Wonder why Nintendo hasn't decided to revisit this idea in some form, as again, it was fun.

I had no idea you could play this game online over NSO, nor did I know about the multiplayer battle mode with power ups 😮 I need to make use of my NSO subscription more often! Mario Bros has been one of my favorites since I was a kid playing Mario Bros on the Atari 2600!

When I just had a sole GBA/DS back in the day without any link cable thing whatsoever with games like MKSS (miss out on battle mode), P much every sonic game on the GBA, most of what went on in Pkmn and now this makes the jealousy of my young self kinda go higher bc these multiplayer things on GBA def seem kinda groovy
I used to actually play this a lot when I was a kid.
You should try out super mario war, its an old school fan game I admittedly don't know a ton about, but it's four players, and features similar gameplay to what you showed along with tons of maps and gamemodes. The default game mode is more similar to NSMB for the DS where you can stomp other players, but not to get stars but rather to get points. There are a ton of other game modes I haven't tried yet so there may be something closer to the original mario bros, or even another mode you may like
When Sakurai said Luigi was the first echo fighter, the implication was that Mario Bros. was the first platform fighter. He was entirely correct.
