This episode covers the Mukden Incident of 1931 and how Japan began it's invasion of Manchuria.
The Mukden incident or Manchurian incident of 1931 was the beginning of the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. The mastermind behind the Mukden incident was Ishiwara Kanji, a officer in the Kwantung Army who sought to solve the "Manchurian Problem" via force.
The "Manchurian Problem" was a crisis in which Japan's leadership believed Japan required Manchuria for economic and national security reasons. Manchuria held numerous natural resources, large amounts of land for emigration and was a buffer between Japan and her enemy the USSR.
Ishiwara Kanji believed in his "final war theory", that a great world war was soon to occur and in order for Japan to survive it, Japan required Manchuria. Ishiwara devised a false flag operation to seize Manchuria going against direct orders from Tokyo. Ishiwara targeted the Peitaying barracks in Mukden as the initial point to attack the forces led by the warlord of Manchuria Zhang Xueliang.

The Boshin and Russo- Japanese , southeast asian videos are what brought me the the channel. Great content. It would be an intesting topic to cover more late 1800s japanese colonial expansion and the various resistance moments like in taiwan and Philippines ect.

Interesting, are you talking resistances pre WW2, during or after for Taiwan and Philippines?

Ah, good old Ishiwara. The man's entire life is a tapestry of fascinating events and actions.
The man had his flaws, but he had balls of adamantium for his criticism of Tojo, the Army and the actions of the Japanese during the wars. Then at the war crimes trials, he flat out states President Truman should answer for the fire bombings of Japanese civilians.

Big time, Kings and Generals lent a hand teaching me how to improve on my maps, and in general I just took the time to figure out some better editing techniques 😅.

Haha, finally getting paid sponsorships, eh? Good video as always, kind of crazy what an easy hand Ishiwara Kanji was dead. Would the course of the Pacific War had changed if he had never got involved? I knew he was important because of his popular, nihilist policy, but him triggering a war against all odds is just maddening.

Its insane how a single person technically changed global history multiple times.

@@ThePacificWarChannel it's kind of on par with the Rikshaw guard that cut Czar Nicholas II during his visit to Japan, which solidified a permanent seething hatred in the Czar for Japan and was a major influence on his later actions in the Russo Japanese war.
It really is amazing how major catastrophic events that burn whole segments of the globe can often hinge on one seemingly isolated and insignificant individual.

Main show is called "Young Marshal" (can watch it on UA-cam in Mandarin). The anime is called "Zipang", a really bizarre one where some Japanese are sent back in time to WW2 and they meddle in the history etc.

Of course, basically after this episode I will cover the rest of the invasion of Manchuria, some political situations in 1930s Japan and it will all culminate with the Marco Polo Bridge incident (with a lot of emphasis on Ishiwara)
