WOW! Will Take Charge was closing with a tremendous rush at the end. Spine tingling!
I could care less about "oh, he wasn't the best horse, he shouldn't have won." MMM came into my life during a time in my life where it was dark and grey in some areas. He was a welcome distraction, and I connected with him more than any other horse. To see him win the Classic brought me so much happiness, so much joy. Regardless of what everyone says, to me, he will always be, the BEST horse EVER, because of everything he's given back to me. I love this horse more than words.
Excellent call!
Back again watching this 😄
The legend Larry Collmus
Can't believe NYRA let him walk, the new dude is horrible, thankfully he's still the voice of the Triple Crown...
Guess he is a great commentator!!! Larry your one of my favs
An exceptional race from an exceptional meeting... was spellbound from the Marathon to the on the line drama of the Classic... excellent horses, superb rides, stories a plenty, drama, brilliant races all of them... it had it all... International sport at it's very very best... it was worth the late nights watching the meetin in the UK
Long live the B/C...
That's what you call "PASSION" from the commentator, truly GREAT STUFF, haha. :-)
Totally agree Alexis. This was an awesome finish and the call was super exciting, reaching a fever pitch in the final strides. These horses run their guts out and we get to enjoy the memories! I still watch runnings of the Classic from 1984 through modern times, and I still get shivers down my spine. I love me some racing!!
I love his calls, too. He used to call at Suffolk near my hometown in Boston. He has certainly climbed the ranks, and I feel he has earned his way to the top. Also, when you meet him in person, he is short like a jockey but big on charisma. A very nice gentleman who gave the fans his time and spoke to us like he cared.
....greatest sport in the world.....this race is WHY!
Best race of the world majors all year. Well rode Gary.
Mucho Macho Maaaaaaaan! best-named horse ever
I enjoy this call by Larry Colmus, at first I was mad that they took Trevor Off for the tv broadcast the first year but the 2nd year Colmus impressed me very much especially with this call the derby in 12' and 13' are also great calls
laughing my head off listening to that commentary. That's how you commentate
the money was in on MMM, and on the TV broadcast they showed Ritvo right before the race....I LOVE YOU MISS GINTER
I agree on all counts. The top three did their connections proud for sure. Aiden O'Brien is one of the greatest trainers ever on the planet, too. Yes, he gets the absolute best in terms of pedigrees, but he still gets them ready for the big events, and pedigree doesn't always pan out as expected. I have the utmost respect for European racing. MMM, WTC and DoW gave us a finish we will not soon forget. A classic finish in the Classic!
I could watch this race over and over and over again. Larry and his intensity down the homestretch when he's yelling at the top of his lungs sends shivers down my body. Congratulations to leggy angel Mucho Macho Man! I am more than overjoyed that he won.
What an amazing race. And an amazing year for Gary Stevens.
A good effort from D Wayne Lukas' Will take charge as well. INSTANT classic. Wow.
A horse that will be in the top five in the best horse ranking ever made is an excellent horse
great race but hard for me to watch! i have loved Will Take Charge all year and I was there at the BC to see him and the other Lukas horses and I told everyone who would listen he was gonna win. I was near the finish line screaming (and swearing) my head off for him, all he needed was one more inch! MAN! but still, great race. and that's racing. Love Gary Stevens. Miss Oxbow being in here too!
Everyone needs to stop. Macho Man won this race fair and square. He DESERVED it!!!
Even as a Brit/European. We don't win that many races but love the Breeders Cup and American racing so much 💙🏴🇬🇧
I'm an avid fan of Mucho Macho Man. I knew he was sitting on a big one just from his works and previous race. Then, I noticed something in the post parade. MMM was on his feet, ears up, very lively, prancing like he was on hot coals. I've watch many of his races live and he's NEVER done this, even when he came a strong 3rd in the Derby. I saw that and thought "What is he going to show us today?" He showed us all his heart coming down the lane.
Had a horrible meeting betting-wise and put a precise amount on to be barely up for the meeting if my last horse won. I've had big wins, but this is one of my favorite wins and I still feel a bit of what I felt whenever he shouts out "Mucho... Macho MAAAAAN!!!!
Mango 73 up to this date i still believe charge had him at the wire ...is there photo link to this
I had 5 out of 6 in the pic 6! My one loss came when Magician ran down The Fuge by a neck! Buick moved waaay to early! I also had a nice exacta with Declaration of war, great day, but could have been epic!
Sounds like a disgruntled punter here. Clearly MMM was the best horse on the day. It is up to jockeys to position their mounts to the best of their ability and change leads when they see fit and still MMM comes out on top!! fabulous ride by Gary Stevens
Awesome race call. Made it so much better!!
An all time call by Larry Collmus Legend.
I agree that Declaration of War ran a monster race and has a lot of talent. It just rubs me the wrong way when people start making it seem the actual winner didn't deserve it.
It was decided before the race that he'd retire after this race regardless.. so he's been retired since the end of the race
For a turf horse, Declaration of War ran a giant race, and he never switched to his right lead. I would send him to Dubai for sure.
Declaration of War was initially trained in the U.S by Todd Pletcher. They considered him good enough for the Derby but for whatever reason sent him to England. He stated because of a "setback" This is according to Steve Haskin at Bloodhorse. He appears to be a lightly built colt. He has to wear a strap (don't know what it's called) that holds the saddle in place. This wraps around his chest. I think not changing leads hurt his chance a little.
Yea, the Europeans don't always switch when they come here. I will say that Declaration of War is a monster. In my eyes, horses that can ship around the world and run equally well on both surfaces are the ones I admire most. It was good to see Mucho Macho win, and he has always been in the mix but never seemed to win the big one. Good story.
great call by larry
Ooooh yeah ! Can You dig it !
What a ride by the winning jockey. Notice how he sits up and does not take the rail on the final bend. He bides his time and lets his horse eyeball another on the inside before going to work. great ride!
This is one of the classic finishes of the Classic. The three horses involved in the photo earned a very good speed figure by my calculations. Not sure why anybody could complain about the race or its winner.
Larry makes every race, would love him in the UK!
MUCHO MACHO MAN!!!! GOTTA LOVE THE END OF THE RACE. THE CALL BY COLMUS IS INCREDIBLE!
I sure wish races were still shown in the "pan view" mode like they used to be.
Great call !!!!
I am not ashamed to admit I have replayed this race ten times :-) In terms of their respective moves, MMM and WTC reminded me of Ferdinand & Alysheba's race in '87. Ferdinand stalked, Alysheba stalked him, & they laid it out in the stretch w/Ferdinand holding off the late charge of Alysheba. I love horses who have tactical speed and insert themselves in the garden spot, hang back & let everyone else kill each other up front, then take an insurmountable lead in the stretch. Cigar, S Silence, etc.
We've seen them run big time many times in the Classic. Arcangues, Giant's Causeway, Sakhee, Raven's Pass, etc. And now add Declaration of War to that list. European racing gets them ready for routes. I wish more route races existed throughout the year in the U.S. Having said all that, Declaration of War ran HUGE!
Great run by the "Dec".
Ran an absolute blinder, cracking race , pleased for the winning connections.
MUCHHHOOOMACHHOOOMANNNN ARGGHHHHHHSS .. lmao man i fucking love horse racing .
Yay mucho!!!!
You can find it at HRTV.
DURKIN will forever be my favorite, Collmus did an awesome job, and I agree about Denman. Even though I shouldn't have laughed at obscenity, your comment really cracked me up!
Congrats Mucho Macho Man!
MMM came close last year, got it done this year. Best horse in the race. In other news trevor denman was amazing, one of the best calls ive ever heard. #MMMFTW
'As bad as Tom Durkin'. WHAT? What planet are you on? Durkin is a legendary caller. You not liking him for whatever reason does not dispute that. Also, are caps really that necessary? Collmus did an absolutely fine job. He actually shows emotion, unlike many other callers.
My God I thought he( Dow) was coming to take it, well done Ballydoyle, he ran his heart out.
thrllin' ride on declaration of war wow
I had a $10 exacta box, with declaration, will take charge got up in there. Not to mention 5 of 6 on a $24 ticket. Cringe everytime I see the sire Magician, his progeny still proving they want no part of 1 1/2 mi. No, it doesn't Sting a bit.
Great selection then, he ran huge! Good for you bud :-)
People always insert conjecture and say "would have, should have." Truth is...we will never know! The only result, the only truth, the only fact is the one that played out.
this race was awesome.....will take charge came within inches of repeating drosselmeyers 2011 final charge.....that bump at 152-153 cost him the win ...great race history almost repeated itself
Kathy Ritvo trainer at Santa anita PARK this Barry Shulman who you must remember me.One morning on the backside at Suffolk downs I was done for the day .I had breezed and worked on the wood for some owners .That's what they used me to do I was the best exercise rider and jockey to be . I went to Gulfstream Park in 1984 and worked on the backside and bumped into a trainer that Denise Budrout who passed away had owned a farm and wanted me to work some of young horse's out .They were young horse's and the horses on a real racetrack are easier to work out . I also drove frank Smith"s Elloree training center south Carolina was alot of farms and Lucien Laurens training center in south Carolina where secretariat worked out was a mile down the highway and my friend Anthony Scott went with me and he worked for Lucien Lauren and was at Frank Smith" training center at night during the winter it was beautiful we to a few places out for a coffee or a club to listen to music .Rudy Baez said to me so many yrs. Ago that I was a great rider. Kathy Ritvo you did it . I have nothing to prove but was in my blood and grew up with horse's and went into horse shows in Wilmington ma. And jumped fences.I hope and racing business people will come back at Suffolk downs .I still watch a the racing tvg but I have another one that shows racing in England Europe where it all started four centuries ago. Barry Shulman .
We’ll Take Charge a final bid! MUCHO MACHO MAN!!!!!!!!!
he apparently didn't handle dirt as a youngster, hated the kickback and he's taken a long time to mature, given very little Racing last year and improved a huge amount throughout this season here. Gutted he just couldn't get past MMM, superb ride and performance, lost absolutely nothing in defeat
Muchooooo macho maaaaan!!!!!!
It’s the greatest race call of all time. Perfection gate to wire.
Exactly!
great race exciting
MUCHHHHHHHHHHHO MACHHHHHHHHHO MANNNNNNNNNNNNN
I couldn't even hear Larry Collmus' call beyond the quarterpole due to the background audio.
On Labor Day, 2010, I bet Gangsterontherun, a Saratoga-Parx shipper who was second to Pletcher debut winner Skylord and was a bargain at 6-5 against a "nothing" maiden field." Scrached from that race was Mucho Macho Man, who wound up breaking his maiden at 9-5 at Monmouth. I tracked "supermaidens" who had lost to future stakeswinners and MMM was one! As for Gangsterontherun, he came back to win a $16k claimer at 2-1 at Parx, then broke down and died the next time he ran here. Such diversity in the maiden ranks.
Yep.
Great Race
Mucho mucho macho man if he don't do it nobody can.
Declaration of war got whipped like crazy
its not the same without Zenayatta
Epic call this announcer!! I love Trevor Denman but this announcer out did him on this one
Anyone have Trevor's call of the race?
MUCHO MACHO MAAAAAAANNN!!!!
む〜ちょ〜まっちょめん
可愛いね
ELLIE GOULDING RULES THE WORLD
What a fucking epic race!!
I watched it again and Will Take Charge still doesn’t quite get up. What an absolutely horrible ride he got; he was much the best.
Gary 👍!
Wish the quality of this replay was better, because the NBC coverage/filming was incredible. Mucho Macho Man ran an amazing and game race! He dug in to hold on gamely and like a true champion. Well deserved and awesome race!
greater race call ever !
Gotta love the american commentary.. f*cking hilrious..."muuuuchooo maaachooo maaaaaan!!" :D
***** He clearly needs help. But I'm no supporter of the prison system. Hopefully he comes to accept the new track announcers; some people really struggle with change...
I've been tipping DoW for this race to anyone who'd listen since July. Very near miss.
Still want Joseph to get there.
They need to retire Paynter immediately...the colt survived an illness that would of killed most, and his bloodlines are immaculate...should make for a great stud/daddy if given the opportunity. He's obviously not the same. He's earned his upkeep...stop letting GREED destroy these wonderful beings. JMO.
I had Mucho Man Man finishing first and I'll Have Another second. If Paynter showed, I would have been one million dollars richer :(
I meant Will Take Charge :p Don't know why I posted I'll Have Another
Dont be giving me that shit! cant get blood out of a stone.
ALIVE
I still think Will Take Charge got his nose across first.
I don't know but I sure am happy they didn't. Actually, Larry's call was very exciting and reached the perfect crescendo at the end. I don't think he gets the credit he deserves, as he is a very solid race caller. He accurately coveys the complexion of races as they unfold. This is a race I will rewatch over and over because it was so close, the back stories were amazing (Ritvo, Stevens) (D Wayne & Take Charge Lady's son almost winning.) I like that his voice reflected the emotions of all that
Why didn't they use Trevor Denman?
Spiker süper anlatıyor 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇺🇸🇺🇸
What are you even talking about? First of all he is being retired to stud and secondly since his comeback he has 1 win 2 seconds, and 2 off the board finishes.
I know what you mean... how about the "if the race had been 50 yards longer, he would have won"
El caballo 8 le sube a will take charge en la salida de la última curva y lo hace perder terreno!
the best horse was nosed out by the best jocky
🕯️
haha!!

Race Call:
Larry Collmus
Just a beautiful day at Santa Anita. Any plans to have this event at any other race track at that time of year is silly. I live in So Cal and was at the BC in 2010 in Churchill Downs and have to say CD can't hold a candle to Santa Anita. Actually, CD is kind of a shithole.
I live in Maryland and went to Pimlico once. It's a nice track. And it's apparently much more hospitable than Churchill Downs according to Steve Coburn. I've never been to Santa Anita. I heard it's nice.
