I've just discovered these clips of Frank Brennan, and I think that we should all strive to be like him. His karate is hard and strong. He is fast, but he has power. He is not just fast and sloppy, which is unfortunately very common. Pitty pat punches only piss people off, and they DON'T work. I can tell, however, that Frank Brennan means business, and that he understands what Shotokan is all about (of course I'm stating the obvious LOL). Thank you Mr. Brennan, and thanks for posting. Oss
I remember being stationed in Europe during 7 yearws o fhe 80s and all of the 90s. Frank Brennan was probably the most precise and excellent karateka of the time. There were others, but when you have size, mass, speed and technique on your side, few can compete. Many people had one or two of the talents, but all of them? Very few
This Mr Frank Brennan is one of my all time favorite Karate-ka. WKF now having changed so much towards european style point system misses some of the Ippon type scoring that Mr. Brennan so very well exemplifies. Such an inspiration !! Thanks.
If you're interested in training with Sensei F. Brennan but you're not a member of the KUGB, if you can get to England there are two 5 day open courses run every year during the school Easter and Summer breaks instructed by the members of the KUGB technical committee including Sensei F. Brennan. I try to go to the Lancaster one every year and it is a really brilliant experience. The instructors are mind-blowingly good (even if one is a little talkative). You can get the details from the KUGB :)
i remember doing a full session and grading with Brennan, y sensai's trained under him and andy sherry, the standard is soo high its unbelievable, he pretty much killed everyone and THEN graded us haha
People do karate, like any martial art, for different reasons. I do it for fitness and self defence, whereas some people do it to compete and become the best.
Never saw Frank before. His karate is true. When I say true, I mean he has always practiced with kime. I can tell he has never thrown a technique without full purpose. Makes me need to step up my training. Would hate to line up against him in competition.
UFC can't help a student with cerebral palsy, diabetes or osteoporosis. You see? Not every opponent is found in the ring. Life itself is often our most formidable opponent. I have seen many students that are unable to step in the ring because of their afflictions. Nevertheless, they are the most faithful in their training. The human spirit is indominable. This spirit which will not accept defeat is the true essence of budo! OSU!
6:20 bad time to be wearing white lol I would have crapped myself being on the receiving end of that. Crisp and solid techniques, Frank's the first big name I knew of in shotokan and still turn to him to remind me of what karate is.
OKay, I want to get my kicks higher. I am currently only reaching head level at my height. But clearly one can get to a point where they can kick even further and higher up than this. Would anyone know how might I go about learning how to kick higher?
ushiro mawashigeri with a heel is devastating. Just to demonstrate, stand still and place your hand open facing the floor and strike you hand with your heel, even with little effort you can really feel the force and hurt your hand. I once was stupid doing light sparring with a lady at my old karate club and done a heel version of this kick to the side of the face with moderate power. Lets just say a very awkward moment ensued after that,. I still feel an apology is needed.
@windowpain81 :D yeah my comment was lil bit short confusing and harsh (thought u never comment back). Ok 10th dan might take lifetime maby never....i do know that high rankings arent and shouldnt given easily (havent mentioned jka or any organisation). I wanted to comment alot longer but had to cutt of most of my text.
Window, I'm with you, I'm not actually bashing muay thai--it's a great art. But there's so many dojos popping up calling them "muay thai" when the instructors were former cardio-box instructors at Ballys, it bugs me. Most arent legit dojos, or legit trainers. So thats what I'm referring to. Thom's an idiot, he wont sway my opinion about the efficacy of Shotokan. Take care man!
@windowpain81 Really a whole whoooping 10th dan. Whos your cousing. I dont remember that i seen lot of 10th dans running around since they are japanese anyway(shotokan i mean), at least havent heard any white person with so high rank.
@windowpain81 It's been so long, I don't remember, but I believe it was something like "any MMA fighter with a few years could kick Frank Brennan's ass" (lol). Olev=douchebag know-nothing. If the only Shoto organization in the world was the JKA, he'd be right, but it isn't, due to their own in-fighting. Shotokan just gets a bad rap as most schools don't teach hardcore combat application due to insurance issues. Old school=broken teeth, broken bones. Just look at Nishiyama (RIP O-Sensei).

Outstanding, still the best all round karateka I've seen.
His timing is amazing and the guy certainly kicks like a mule. That ashi barai-mawashi geri combo he does is incredibly fast...

Most people have one leg better than the other. But you just can't tell with him. He's amazing with either. Makes me sick 🤣
Sequence at 3:38 is ridiculously amazing.

Word. I appreciate it man
that's not ushiro mawashi geri. it's ura mawashi geri, and ushiro ura mawashi geri.
Tell Lyoto Machida that.
Machida is not even in same league as Sensei Frank Brennan
brennan he's a war machine ... that's not the style he did ... if he did kung fu it would be equally dangerous
