I can’t believe I used to watch this show as a kid.. wtf was this 😭
used to watch this with my mam we were miniature pods 😂
Love your videos man they are brill plus your fit can't say I mind
Aww baby emilyboo
The woman who hosts the show is the voice of pod btw
Emily Boo still has a UA-cam channel. She's a laugh, good value.
What I found weird is the fact that the producers got grown men to decide if they'd snog or marry a 17 year old girl!!
FBI OPEN UP!!!
It’s a British show the age is 16 here not 18-19
@sophie.9317 and in some countries the age of consent is lower, it doesn’t make it less weird for grown men to be going after girls still in school
@@sophie.9317doesnt matter its gross and weird
@@squeakatu1981it’s wrong for men to look at women as sex objects regardless of age I understand the concept that natural beauty is beautiful but this show in it self should have got axed and taken off air the reason being is because they have fully grown ass men rating women on looks
She has a UA-cam channel called Emily Boo and she’s such a sweet person in her videos, she talked about her episode a few times and I’d suggest people to give it a watch to understand what was happening outside of the show, happy watching everyone x
I can't find the video sadly, do you have a link lovely?
@@zaraalbright8094afaik she took them down due to the fact that it's about her aboosive ex partner. She made another video where she talked about the backstory of the relationship (it's very hard stuff, SA etc.
@@zaraalbright8094 it's just Emily Boo, she's taken a lot of her piercings out but is still clearly alt and I believe still with the same guy in the video who is her husband (edit: nevermind there's other comments saying he was actually really mean and that she made a video about it?), I didn't find her specific snog marry avoid content so she might've taken it down 🤷🏻♀️
The woman who described herself as ‘the queen of charity shops’ was a supply teacher at my school for a while - she showed us her episode in class once 😂
How did she look in class? Like what style did she have?
this man’s mother raised him right.
TRUE
It’s genuinely quite refreshing to hear you say and that they’re happy and confident and that why should they change if they’re happy? Another great vid Cam! Keep em coming 😎
Having a make under there is nothing wrong with it natural beauty is better but like if there happy that way than yet let them be I think this show should have been axed cause they get fully grown men rating women
the sad thing about the goth couple was he was NOT a nice person, the girl has a video about her experience with him and the show and its awful for her
I came to the comments to see if anyone brought this up!
@@LaLaSimpkins makes me so sad cos every snog marry avoid video i see shes in the thumbnail or atleast in the video
link?

What’s the video called
Even if they looked bad before, the makeover they give them makes them look very old and weird and takes away their uniqueness
It's really worth checking out the girl with all the piercings, Emily Boo - she has a YT. Her husband at the time, shown in the video, was abusive and manipulative as fuck. Thankfully she's now in a much better place in a much happier marriage, but her story is so sad.
cam defending the contestants against the public is sooooo funny and kinda wholesome love you cam ❤ hope you’re feeling better x
This video is proof not every guy is the same. Cam is such a nice person, and you can tell he’s not just saying this stuff, hes actually genuine, whereas every other guy would probably be saying negative things about the girls.
Unfortunately, he said things about the guys and their opinions when there was nothing wrong with their appearances, which weren’t funny. It was just unnecessary. 😲
Some of the ladies didn’t need to wear as much makeup, nor any fake tan, nor as many accessories as they were genuinely natural beauties deep down. 😃
2000s-2010s British TV was so judgemental for no reason🥲🥲
I’d love a reboot of this show where the contestants WANT their style to be altered a bit, where the public opinions are honest but not rude asf, and where the “make under” stays true to their style, but with a few tweaks, instead of dressing them in a default outfit
I found it weird how they got public to say weather they would snog or marry a 17 year old
i'm absolutely proud of Cam for encouraging the unique and expressive styles of these women; take notes lads!
Only halfway through this video, but I remember watching this as a young woman when it was being aired on British TV and it seriously fed into the most distorted perception of myself and encouraged me to partake in destructive tendencies in order to attain the unattainable beauty standards set for women - ED's included. I can't begin to remark how damn refreshing it is to see someone like Cam feeling the same outrage watching this back as I do, especially in regards to the scathing comments made by male members of the public about the appearance of these already beautiful and oftentimes unique women, especially when they're no oil painting themselves and are likely commenting on a girl HALF THEIR AGE that they wouldn't even dare to approach even if it wasn't an arresting offence.
Thank you, Cam, for the great content as always, and for highlighting this show as the toxic, patriarchal criticism of powerful, independent women that it always has been. I commented weeks ago about binging the channel whilst on bedrest when pregnant with my first child. Now, I am watching this with my newborn daughter, and I am happy that there are people in this world, men too, that see through this kind of misogynistic spiel. It makes me glad that my own daughter is growing up in a more evolved and morally advanced society where we can view this kind of content as being insidiously damaging to women whilst being portrayed as 'empowering'.
It’s actually extremely refreshing seeing a man voice this viewpoint 👏🏼 well done cam, you’ve done good
i dress emo/goth and ppl are so rude to me on the street it’s insane! i’m not even as “extreme” as the ones in the video but ppl yell at me, laugh take pictures of me and so on it’s scary and shocking. i get that ppl stare, i can live with that but random groups of men coming up and throwing insults at me when i’m alone bc of the way i dress and present myself is terrifying
I had a right reality check when I got with my partner a few months ago - I dress fairly alternatively but my partner stands out a LOT. Despite being just 20 they’re heavily tattooed, has large stretched jewellery including a big septum ring at 6mm, blue hair, and this plus being 6 foot 4 makes them a relatively intimidating looking person. Yet people still take the piss. Photos, jokes, following us, yelling at us, I’ve never seen anything like it towards myself, and if these skinny short men feel comfortable throwing insults at my partner who looks like they could easily beat them all up I fear what could happen to me if I looked that way too. Before we met they even said they’d been jumped before which made them tone it down which is terrifying to think about. It’s an unfair world out there man
The girl with all of the piercings actually has her own UA-cam channel now and she is so sweet ❤
What shows would you like to see me breakdown on the channel? Lmk below x
there's one where they have baggage and they have to choose a person based on their baggage, the person picking then gets their baggage aired at the end. Also the badness (?) of baggage gets bigger over time and it's usually pretty wild. I can't remember the name of the show but i think it was just called 'baggage' from MTV in the 2000s/2010s
in for a penny was abit mad

You’ve dressed her in a Wetherspoon’s plate!!!! 😂🤣😂🤣😔. Everybody knows **exactly** what you mean!! 😂🤣
nah this show was mental and like 95% of the time they looked better before the ‘makeover’😭😭
AGREED
Nah, only if you’re attracted to syphilitic drag queens.
So true. ❤
Aw, love you so much Cam! You're such a sweet sweetie!! This is a great video and you're absolutely right. Everyone should dress how they want to dress and in whatever makes them feel comfortable in their own skin. Love yourself and know you're beautiful just the way you are. You shouldn't change unless you want to! 🥰
You complimenting donatella made me “awe” out loud okay no homo but it was not expected and I love that kind energy.
Same here, that compliment was so sweet, like men and women can be so harsh on women for aging.
This show would have been so much better if they just did a refined version of their actual style and didn't dress them all in the same bland clothes
But this show encapsulated the way people felt about beauty at the time. Sadly, this was genuinely what was felt by most people. It's hard to understand. You have to have lived through it.
I'm so so so glad things are changing ❤
One of them just turned into a possessed 1600s milkmaid
One of the people on it there is emilyboo, as far as im aware she has talked about it.
But its safe to say she like kept her sense of style.
The outfits pod gave everybody were pretty hideous.
This and sun, sex and suspicious parents was prime bbc 3 😂
What an iconic show this was
Please do a video on sun, sex and suspicious parents!
Also Bizarre E.R and Coming of age
Just another example of ‘people are happy- we must destroy that’
the way they strip all the character from these people then make them look 20 years older is so strange 😭😭
They all look like school receptionist afterwards
I am impressed with you. You are a thoughtful young man with great advice for others. You are quite funny and charming, as well.
As a goth with many piercings, I used to experience a lot of verbal abuse and stares from others. However, I realized that it was more about body language. When I stopped slouching, started walking with my head up, a smile on my face, and greeted other people, even if they didn't greet me first, I found that people were more open to talking. I received fewer random verbal abuses and instead heard people say things like "I like goth, it's cool" and received compliments on my piercings. It's all about body language. When you present yourself as unapproachable, you invite negativity, but when you give off an approachable energy, people seem to be fine with you.
Yeah this happened to me as well. I was always friendly and so my weird dress got compliments
I love when Cam gets slightly irate, his voice turns into Sarah Millican's
“The Wolf of Wigan” sent me over 😂😂😂😂😂😂
i used to chill with a couple people with lots of piercings, the staring shit is very real lmao
The song playing under the Goth couple is Joy Division's Love will Tear Us Apart Again. Also known for Leeds are Falling Apart Again.
I lesson I try to live by more recently is very applicable to this show. “Don’t make yourself so palatable that you lose your original flavour”
I used to have *one* facial piercing, and received the same treatment from strangers that couple does.
The producers DEFINITELY cherrypicked the answers from the public for the show
I can tell im tired cause when i saw the CB on your shirt i genuinely for a moment thought it stood for "Cam Blirkham" 💀💀
Your eyes look like they've got piles 😂😂 and that dad was definitely creepy! 😂😂
Snog Marry Avoid was so wild! I used to watch it as as young teenager and I'm pretty sure it's partly responsible for me being a basic b that was too afraid to express myself and dress how I wanted. Luckily I have recovered from basic b syndrome and wear what I want
This is the nicest and fairest reaction to the show ❤
16:39 this one always throws me off a bit because “homely” means “unattractive in appearance” in the US lol.
A woman: Feels confident, likes to try and look good.
Men: Oh she’s totally up herself, so vain.
We need to do better man…
Dude cams sweater game is next level
Totally. I love his sweater ❤
Cam that jumper looks so comfortable
Horrifying
19:14 "not being loud" haha i feel called out
5:01 yes, I’m a UK college student and have a septum piercing and a nose stud. Some (not all) of the construction b-tech students are known for making fun of piercings and lgbt+ students. I’ve been called a bull whilst leaving the vape shop, shopping in primark, and whilst in greggs
Most people are chill, but I’ve def had people glance at me a few too many times or make comments on the bus or walking down the street
I love you cam, you're so wholesome 😂❤
What’s the worst thing about this show is the goth girl on the show it said she was 18 and she made a video on UA-cam a while ago saying she was actually 15/16 and the guy she was dating (possibly married to I can’t remember) was like 30
You’re so witty and enjoyable!😘
I LUV YR CHANNEL 💘 YOU MAKE ME LAUGH SOOOO MUCH 😂😂😂😂THANK YOU FOR PUTTING YR ADHD SELF OUT THERE 😊...YOU ARE FANTASTIC AND NEEDED 💯👍
I watched this as a kid and always hated how dull the contestants looked after the makeunder like it had just stripped the fun right out of their look. To this day my opinion has not changed, I love a bit of extra
19:48 "i really don't like your hairy head" where does she want the hair to be?
And Alice Cooper is 🐐
First video ive seen of yours and im crying laughing 😂😂😂 cant believe i used to watch this
You're missing the point that they all claimed to be lonely and nobody took them seriously. So confidence was nothing more than a shield against the world
Completely agree Cam!! Does anyone else think Harriet's boyfriend looks like he uses a fair amount of fake tan himself 😂😂
The girl with all the piercings is Emily Boo she is so amazing and kind
And yes if you wear stuff like Emily and have loads of piercings you do get those sorts of stares etc I've been beaten up before just for my outfit and piercings 😢
I know. I always see people staring at goths, as if they're from another planet.
3:06 ohhh girl them brows….listen friend trust me, girls NEED to look out for each other! I’m 41 and had crazy drawn on brows and it looked TERRIBLE but I thought it looked good, 😂😂i FINALLY listened and I’m so embarrassed of my photos looking back 😂🤦♀️🤦♀️
As an incredibly alternative person, those descriptions of what happens is absolutely accurate. I get people gasping at me, laughing in my face, shielding their kids eyes, stuff chucked at me, barked at, called slurs, yelled insults, have people say "what the f". I could go on. We get treated like shi by more people than you'd think
@@desdemona6834 yeah it honestly sucks and you never know the extent until you experience it firsthand, I had no idea how terribly I'd be treated but my experiences aren't comparable to the experiences of others who are very different.
Yo hi cam love the vid, you made a great clothing advertisement because my friend now bought the jumper as it’s just a whole comfy vibe in it’s self thanks my dude.
Cam, nobody eats bran flakes 🤣🤣
You forgot to mention the part at the end where they'd have them come back after some amount of time to see if they had changed their style and literally almost none of them had.
As someone with a decent amount of piercings and an alternative look similar to the gothic couple. Yes, people absolutely stare at you. I also think I haven't had a single time where I left my home without some child calling me nasty names for how I dress.
Some people give really positive reactions though- Those stick with me way longer!
I don't have all my piercings in anymore - even though I realistically haven't had loads (nerve pain & sensory issues meant I took quite a few out bc my body suddenly decided it couldn't stand certain ones anymore, even though they'd healed & I'd stopped noticing them 🙃. Been slowly getting more again/tapering old ones now I've got more of a handle on that 😅)... But people would stare at my vertical labret and my septum in particular 😳. I tend to wear gold & opal/clear gem jewellery bc I like it and it suits my skin tone so it wasn't as easily noticed on me as silver, but I would still notice people staring at times, and some even telling me I'd "ruined my face" 💀. Its like... did I ask for your opinion??? 🤔 my last piercing was my other nostril and now I'm wanting to add some more to get a constellation type thing going on (space permitting 😅) - and with every piercing certain people notice it's the same damn thing about putting holes in my face & ruining it... at this point I just tell them I've never truly regretted a piercing, even the ones I've taken out and have "holes" leftover, besides which, it's _my_ face to ruin if they think that way 🤷🏼♀️. Same with my gauged ears... even though I only got to 5mm before I lost the jewellery (going to get back on it and get up to 10mm ish though soon) - despite the fact that I literally can't wear normal earrings 99% of the time, let alone my beloved witchy dangling ones - which are only possible for me to wear through tunnels 🙄.
My aesthetic isn't really like the gothic couple, but it's definitely more alt/gothic leaning in some ways, I love all black outfits as much as I love my brightly coloured and patterned stuff, and I always try have flame coloured hair... I just don't feel myself in loads of makeup nowadays and need to be comfy & not feel too heavy... I guess my style is post‐emo/scene kid who grew up to become outdoorsy & fell in love with warm tones 🤣.
Either way, I only ever take a proper look at someone with your style because I'm admiring the body mods & outfit... but I reckon the double nostril piercings, orange hair, and bit of spooky/edginess tip you off to us being kindred spirits haha 😅
Hahahahaa they give the metal detector a heart attack😂😂😂😂😂
Every video I watch of yours increases my respect for you. You are absolutely spot on in everything you said!! You also make a valid point, our generation had this influencing us, so is it any wonder there's so many issues with confidence, own appearance etc. I hope they never make a show like this again!!!
5:00 yes this absolutely happens, i don't have the piercings but i do have a similar dress sense - i catch groups of people giving me looks pretty much every time i go outside lmao, you can absolutely tell exactly who'll give you the looks and the laughs after a while, too
I always found it weird that guests clearly dressed for a night on the town, but were then styled to work at an accountant's.
"I wanted to be different" - looks like everyone else that says the same thing
Can confirm if you was a little bit out there back then you would indeed get stares and comments. It was such a different time 😂
Love your take on this show. Here’s hoping the people who took part watch this video!
Lol ah you sound like Victoria wood and it makes me so happy 😂
"If she has a makeunder, there will be nowt left!" 😂
I used to hate this show - I know people go on there for their own reasons, but why would someone who is clearly confident in their own skin go on a show that will turn them from a unique quirky person into a vanilla person who had no outstanding features - I have always loved seeing people like these, they make me smile 😊
One thing I did find a little off putting is the fact that they allowed someone who is only 17 to go on the show - who would allow their daughter to be judged in such a way at such a young age!?!
As a guy who was 18 when this was on (i know im old) a lot of these girls styles were common, the fake tan, the suped up glamour. However i agree with just dress how you're comfortable
The thing is you're looking at this with 2023 eyes, not 2008 times when WAGS, spray on tan was a big thing. I remember this when it was on. Can't really say more than that. 🤫🙄🤭😎🤯
Spray on tan is horrendous 😭
Genuinely, thank you for this video, rhis is really wholesome and lovely. This is actual female empowerment ❤
One of my stepmams close friends went on this and he says it's one of his biggest regrets. It's Olivia Dean if anyone's wanting to watch it.
as someone who’s goth and has piercings, people absolutely do stare, people bark, yell and walk across the road
I don’t have piercings but I am alternative and I’ve literally had people shout at me in the street calling me a witch, me and my friends had someone do the sign of the cross as we walked past them. The hilarious thing is they all think it’s an insult 💖
This voice of Pod was Rosie Bray.
She was a producer. Quick Google brings up lots of pics of her!
“Does this actually happen?”
Yes, yes it does lol 😂😂😂😂and I only have 5 facial piercings lol
Ah...that was really refreshing mate, I was in a bad mood before watching this but now it's fine. 👋
When I was younger, I was goth and had lot of piercings and crazy hair and all that, I got stared at a lot even made fun of, it didn't bother me though, clearly it bother those who made it a big issue 😂
“You look like your eyes have piles” HAHAHAHA
That lassie at the end was beautiful, those guys only wish.
I personally think if they're not hurting anyone, it really shouldn't matter, but if it's something like they do to feel the need to impress people? I can understand the make under, although my best advice would be to not try to impress anyone, they should value themselves and their happiness and if that involves either dressing differently, who cares! It's what makes them happy.
Best UA-camr ever ngl
Too kind
@@CamKirkham
It’s true tho
@@CamKirkhamon par with Alex possibly………..😉
Literally lol at hand it over don’t be a gate keeper 😂
i cant believe more people haven't made videos about this, i think about it all the time
I think there’s been a weird turn around as of late where instead of people toning down their style to be more normal for the sake of fitting in I find many many people are going wilder with their style solely for the purpose of standing out and being different. Then you get a lot of people who are copying new trends to stand out and be different which always makes me laugh because they’re copying the current most popular thing…to be different…
I personally don’t care how anyone dresses. It doesn’t affect me. I just find it silly when some people are clearly dressing out there to be different and get attention rather than for genuine reasons like simply finding it more fun or more in turn with their personality. But also most of the time we have to experience toning things down too much and scaling them up too much before we find the balance that works for ourselves.
Really interesting looking at your perception of this show. For those that dont know, this was aired at around the time the pubs were emptying, so you were supposed to be drunk and just in from a night out when watching it. The idea was not to 'correct' interesting looking people or tell them to care what other people thought, it was all about first impressions because people used to go out a lot more back then. They revisited quite a few of them to see what they chose to do long term, and very few chose to stay ordinary for any length of time. It is hard to understand post social media that people used to directly interact a lot more than they do now, and they cared a lot less about other people's opinions.
I know that it’s how you view yourself that matters - but I loved this show.
It highlighted natural-look beauty
I only have both nostrils pierced and my septum, and I do get stared at but what I think is worse is when I get barked at….literally barked at by people 😂
Oh my god, same! I got my nose pierced and some teenagers barked at me like???
I was thinking that one of the guys seemed like Peter Parker 😂😂
As someone with a face full of piercings, I can tell you that almost every single person you walk past will laugh, or make some sort of degrading comment- To be fair though, since I have been working in retail and people have to have a conversation with me before judging me straight off the bat, most will tell me that I have got a really friendly face, or a lot are "fascinated" which can be a bit uncomforting but I can appreciate that people aren't used to seeing it. On the contrary, I have had all sorts of rubbish hurled at me just when I'm walking to the shop or work, this could be anything from plastic bottles, to the chicken bones people have finished eating- Adults and children can either be as evil or as lovely as the other and there isn't really any in-between. I'm kind of very much over it all now, and I'm so used to it that I mostly just laugh in response to the childish behaviour as there's nothing I can do about someone's entitled opinions. And I also just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU Cam, because I think we need more people with such a normalised view on being unique or different to typical "societal norms". Great video, keep up the beautiful work. :)

It’s an unfair world out there man
That goth couple
When I see people like that, I am usually taken aback but then I just get on with my day, they are usually not bothering anyone.
Love you for this. So much respect
