The Alfa Nut I’ve done these kind of Restoration projects in the past it always takes longer than expected but it’s definitely worth it in the end. I can see the appeal on this
I was expecting 6 months but its looking more like 18 months! So many bits to replace or refurb....I don’t like doing half a job so I’ve been delving deeper and replacing more parts than perhaps I could have got away with but I don’t want to have to strip the engine twice! 😄
Stick with it Chris, the GTVs are getting quite rare now, and prices are definitely on the rise. They're a thing of quirky beauty. A couple of years ago there were plenty for sale, this year I've only seen three come up on the local internet auction site.
Stick with it Chris, you're doing a great job, it will all be worth it in the end. Gary seems like a handy chap to have around, love the home made slide hammer pulley tool.
Thanks for watching! Yes Gary is a very generous and helpful mate to have around on a project like this - I wouldn’t have been able to get this far without him that’s for sure!
Cheers Ryan, its taken me a long time as I’m learning as I go! I don’t give up though - this car will be driving by the end of the Summer (virus allowing)
The car is coming along great Chris, it will all be worth it in the end you will see! Especially liked Gary's crank pulley puller I could have really done with one of those last Christmas!
Cheers for watching - mine has done about 115k, so the Busso is only just run in! 😄. The engine shop commented on what perfect condition the valves and heads were in. Just gave it a very light skim for safety and new valve guides and a clean! Such a great engine.
115k km or miles? If miles then roughly the same mileage as mine - they are bulletproof, low stress engines quite overbuilt (also why they are rather heavy units). I drive it quite hard and I think it's one of the secrets to keep a Busso going as it keeps everything well lubricated and deposits-free. Nice mod with the GTA cams - will you do a remap afterwards? Got mine done and truly would never go back. Would definitely get a good exhaust system done also - nice to let the Busso breathe and to celebrate the aural presence it has. Free sample on mine: ua-cam.com/video/pRodbV3r3c4/v-deo.html
@@DoctorDARKSIDE Yes 115k miles - looking at all the invoices I have, mine has obviously been well-maintained for most of it's life which helps but I'm a big believer in more frequent oil changes and I use top-drawer Millers. I'll definitely do a remap afterwards and I have a larger bore Cybox stainless exhaust for now. I may eventually treat myself to a Wizard exhaust and manifolds! (Remortgage required!)
Good luck with the restoration! I love the first gen GTV 916 , is my favorite care. Felt in love with it ever sice i first saw the one bought by May in that TG Alfa special as a kid. That random car on TV developed in a deep pasion today and I m so proud to be an alfisti!!! Keep up the amazing work.
As i watch your video, i'm planning on restoring my new find which is an Alfa 145, that has a low mileage and abandoned by the owner after the mechanic messed it up. I love these cars and believe me, its like being bitten by a bug. Awesome video and im looking forward to watch one on assembling the engine on a twin spark
Well done Peter, the 145 is a great car and they are very rare now. In the Uk, there are only perhaps 25 left on the road! Good luck with your rebuild 👍🏻
Haha well....we’ve got the belt on, new tensioner, pulleys and it’s timed up correctly - we were turning it by hand today and all seems good after several attempts to get the belt tight enough. We stood back and were pleased with ourselves until I noticed that we’d forgotten to fit the cam belt covers before the pulleys went back on!! Bollocks! I’m not bothering now - maybe do it some other time 😞
It is if you do it all the time! However this was a complete top end rebuild by amateurs!! In fact we only had 3 hours each Saturday and when you’ve never done it before and keep forgetting where you put bits and make mistakes and have to start again.....well, you get the picture 😄
I’ll let you know mate don’t worry. I was hoping to keep her looking standard but with some internal tweaks - cams, filter & remap. Also got a Cybox larger bore exhaust to go on. I’ve also got some 18” Cloverleaf wheels but I might swap those with my Spider 17” Teledials and put those on the GTV.
Yes you’re right - I just wanted to go slowly in case of “user error”!! In fact I’ve bought a Dremel for the little hard to reach areas but there isn’t a lot of rust to be fair, just some little spots here and there on the front chassis rail etc. (A bit more on the floor pan though which I’ll be dealing with once the car is moving.)
Cheers David, yes the 156 is awaiting some final welding on the sill / floorpan join before I can get it through the MOT. Then I have new carpets, retrimmed steering wheel and correct, tan interior to go in it. That’s Winter project stuff! Enjoy the Duke after shivering in “only” 20 degrees all Winter! 😉
I think I am looking forwards to summer, being out here in Oz, so soon it’s time for more rides on the Ducati, sailing and other enjoyable activities. Alas the Giulia still awaits time and $$ to be spent on it. One day. Good to see some progress on the GTV6. What’s happening with the 156 ? Hope you will get that one sorted out.
Hi David, the 156 is awaiting some final repairs before being MOT'd and put back on the rad, then I have a new interior to fit and she will be finished!
hello, I really like your videos. i have a gtv 916 busso, and i need to remove the dashboard because i found damaged electrical wires. but I do not know how. can you help me?
Hi Carlos, thanks for watching my videos. 👍🏻. I have never taken out a dash in a GTV, so I’m not too sure how to do it but I would suggest that you go to: www.alfaowner.com and ask your question in the GTV section. There are many helpful owners on there, who will be be happy to help you. Good luck
I debated whether to keep it totally factory standard but I’ve got some “18” Cloverleaf wheels which I may put on. (Or swap for my Spiders 17” Teledials!)
I threw some super glue on my spider's door by mistake. Can anybody give me an advice on how to remove it from the amazing giallo zoe paint without damaging it?
If memory serves, super glue is a cyanoacrylate - so acetone should soften it up nicely (and dissolve it completely if you give it enough time.) But like with any solvent, check first to see if it will also dissolve your paint before you try it.
Thanks for watching mate, appreciate it. The pulley tool was designed and made by my mate Gary at TotallyAlfa.com. I wouldn’t have got very far without his help - I’d never stripped a V6 before! I bet your 75 was fun with a 3.2 😄
Hi mate, yes I know what you mean and the car has some holes in the floor under the passenger footwell but the other areas such as rear bulkhead and sills are ok. Strange.
Everyone needs a friend like Gary. That puller was awesome!! Great video
Cheers for watching - I think Gary's puller would have removed the engine if I'd hit it hard enough!!

Hang in there Chris it will be worth it in the end looking forward to seeing the car at an Alfa meet next year 👍
Thanks Martin, hoping to have it running and useable by the Spring. 👍🏻
That pulley was a work of art , i have no doubt when that Engine starts it will sound like a well oiled sewing machine
Thanks for watching Kim, I’m hoping so too - after months of messing about in a chilly barn it will be a pleasure to actually drive the GTv at last! 😄

Tar and glue remover. Autosmart tardis is good. Sometimes a petrol soaked rag is good for stubborn marks. Obviously give it a good wash after.
