This is the game I remember most from any World Cup and the same game that made me fall in love with football. The Dutch team at World Cup 98 had a classic line-up, quality all over the park and some real superstars in all the right places. The overall standard at World Cup 98 was so much better than any of the last 3 World Cups: more entertainment, better headline stories (Ronaldo, Beckham, Zidane), better gamaes and the goal from Bergkamp in this game is the ultimate goal. Amazing.
I remember watching this game and being so heartbroken for them losing and the way they lost, red card then minutes after letting in the GWG. What made it more infuriating was that Argentina would have played Brazil in the semi-final had they won, and that would've been an all time classic! Both teams had a mix of veterans and young players when they were at their prime. But it was not to be..will always wonder what if.
Two great goals: Kluivert's goal after Bergkamp's pass, and El Piojo after an awesome assist by Verón. Then, when the game is about to end, comes Bergkamp and makes forget the rest of the game. Bergkamp scorer of wonderful goals!

Both teams could have won, but Argentina that year was the only team we really feared. After this match i really thought we where gonna reach to the finals. Bergkamp's goal was without a doubt the best one of the 1998 finals and that pass he received from De Boer was par excellence. It's a pity they couldn't win this World Cup or last year's but frankly speaking the 1998 squad was far better than the one in South Africa. Hopefully in 2014 the Oranje can finally get their hands on the elusive Cup. It would be a tall order to win in Brazil though seeing that European team don't seem to fare too well when the WC is played in the Americas.

I was only 10 back then so I didn't know much more than the best players Ronaldo and Zidane etc and I'd watch for them, but the Dutch showed me the meaning of TEAM football and not just individualism.
Holland and Argentina were among the best 4 teams in this tournament. It is kind of sad that they played each other in the quarterfinal, but that is how the cookie crumbles sometimes. Bergkamp was world class; Ortega was a really good crafty player too, but he could do without the excessive diving.

I was 7 y.o when i saw this match... It was incredible i remenber everything, but i wanted Argentina to win, becasue I'm ecuadorian and Argentina is in SouthAmerica... it was a great match...
And ofcourse we qualified for 2010. We were amongst the first European countries to qualify as expected. We didn't had any trouble in 2006 either. We'll be practicing against Italy, Paraguay, USA and the UK. Looking forward to it.
Everyone remembers this match because of the amazing goal of Bergkamp. But for me the best part is the headbutt. It looks like van der Sar gets accidentally headbutted. But if you look closer you see van der Sar running very fast to Ortega after the dive and before Ortega could get up. VAN DER SAR WANTED TO GET A HEADBUTT!!!
As for Holland, they PULVERIZED the latest WC WINNER and runner up both in score AND ball possession, shots on goal, etc. Which means they really had the upper hand and deserved the win. And you can laugh at us being knocked out of the quarters afterwards, but the US made it to the quarters of a really BIG tournament only once (2002). And don't give me shit with the CONCACAF or Conf. Cup. They're like Disney comps compared to Euro, World Cup or Copa América in which US also got trembled in 2007

Wow....the goal at the end was amazing, legendary even....but that header pass to Kluivert(for the first goal) was even more insane to me. He absorbed the pace of that ball, he didn't just redirect it, he somehow took all the "mustard" off the pass as well(he sort of crumples). Truly amazing! He was by far the best player in that tournament, just masterclass stuff. I watched all the games on VHS recently.....god the Dutch suck at penalties! They always lose on penalties! HE WAS A GOD!!!
Probably the best Holland team of my generation, had some fantastic players. I'm always puzzled as to why they always underperform in the World Cup though. I'm an England fan and I always wish England could produce the calibre of players Holland seem to be able to.

I was 7 y.o when i saw this match... It was incredible i remenber everything, but i wanted Argentina to win, becasue I'm ecuadorian and Argentina is in SouthAmerica... it was a great match...
And ofcourse we qualified for 2010. We were amongst the first European countries to qualify as expected. We didn't had any trouble in 2006 either. We'll be practicing against Italy, Paraguay, USA and the UK. Looking forward to it.
Everyone remembers this match because of the amazing goal of Bergkamp. But for me the best part is the headbutt. It looks like van der Sar gets accidentally headbutted. But if you look closer you see van der Sar running very fast to Ortega after the dive and before Ortega could get up. VAN DER SAR WANTED TO GET A HEADBUTT!!!
As for Holland, they PULVERIZED the latest WC WINNER and runner up both in score AND ball possession, shots on goal, etc. Which means they really had the upper hand and deserved the win. And you can laugh at us being knocked out of the quarters afterwards, but the US made it to the quarters of a really BIG tournament only once (2002). And don't give me shit with the CONCACAF or Conf. Cup. They're like Disney comps compared to Euro, World Cup or Copa América in which US also got trembled in 2007

@chrisAKAchig thanks man. Good to see Dutch football made a good name for itsself. That last goal has made grown men cry i'm sure. It is almost devine and can come from no other foot than that of Dennis Bergkamp. He deserves to have this kind of touch and I guess that's why he was given that very gift.

"Het" doelpunt van Bergkamp was pure Kunst maar denk er wel aan, dat er maar wenig voetballers zijn/waren, die zo´n pas over 65 tot 70 meter dermate milimeterprecies kunnen spelen! Twee ongelofelijk mooie doelpunten van Nederland!!
Wow....the goal at the end was amazing, legendary even....but that header pass to Kluivert(for the first goal) was even more insane to me. He absorbed the pace of that ball, he didn't just redirect it, he somehow took all the "mustard" off the pass as well(he sort of crumples). Truly amazing! He was by far the best player in that tournament, just masterclass stuff. I watched all the games on VHS recently.....god the Dutch suck at penalties! They always lose on penalties!

Probably the best Holland team of my generation, had some fantastic players. I'm always puzzled as to why they always underperform in the World Cup though. I'm an England fan and I always wish England could produce the calibre of players Holland seem to be able to.
