Hi, I am Italian and I am very interested in enrolling in the mathematics degree course at the Open University. I wanted to ask you if within the modules to be studied there are also video lessons of the topics and if the exams are written or oral (face to face). Thanks for any replies.

Hi. I study business so I can tell from the business school perspective. Mathematics may be different. Most content is in a written form. There are also some videos but it is rare.
Some modules have exams. They are usually written ones. I did not hear about the oral ones.
Best of luck in your future study!!!

Hello!. If you would like to study full degree it would be 3 years in full time mode (360 credits total, 120 credits a year). If you do not want a whole degree then the Diploma of Higher Education (240 credits) takes 2 years, and Certificate of Higher Education (120 credits) take 1 year.

Are you told where to attend examinations in person and do you have to book the exams or does the Open University tell you where to go for the examinations and book them for you?

Hi! So far my Open Uni work was assessed by coursework so I did not took any exams yet. But when I was registering as a student it asked me where I want to take my exams and I was given a few option nearby where I live. If you live in uk you can take exams in whenever exam centre you want, as long as you tell them early enough. Every town usually have a place when you can take the exam. I do not know how does the booking work and if there is any( I imagine there is) as I have not done it myself yet.
If you happen to study with open uni and need to take exams I am sure that it will be explained in a big detail.

Hi. From what I know usually it is once a year. If you started studying in September the main examination period is in June. And if you started in February then it is usually in September. But in can vary for different modules. On the website you can get information specific to the modules you want to choose. Some modules do not have exams and are coursework based.

Hi Nika, I want to study Business Management at the Open University but I live outside the UK. I don't have to come to the UK and take any exams, right?

Hi Louis. In most cases you can take exams in your home country (depends on country). Outside the UK it would often require traveling to a bigger city, where the exam centre is. You could check on the website if there are any examination centres near you. Not all modules are assessed by examination. Some are coursework (TMA) based and you do not need to travel to do those. The module I am currently doing has no exam in this academic year. Good luck.

Are you doing a lot of math stuff for this degree?

    • @nikaslens6204
      @nikaslens6204  3 роки тому

Hi. Not at all. We do some basic percentages calculations but that's all in a compulsory modules. You might do more maths if you choose modules like accounting or statistics but that's optional. Compulsory part of the course is very light in math.

I start mine in February very nervous as I haven’t been in education since 2016. What I am most scared about is writing and answering questions to an academic level. Do they help you structure answers are are you expected to learn this part yourself?

    • @nikaslens6204

Hello. At the begginibg there is a lot of help with academic writing. When you attend online tutorials you are told exackly how to structure your answers. It also tells you how to do it on coursework guidelines.
There are exercises available that are called "academic writing". They are not compulsory but they help you with your writing skills in general.
If you still struggle you can always ask your tutor for help or use feedback to improve your next coursework.
Dont worry you are not the only one that was out of school for a while. And the course was designed to slowly reintroduce you to the education. There is a lot of support available.
Hope that helps! Best of luck for your study.
