I grew up in Florida and I remember hearing about an underwater cave death every year just about. When Edd mentioned "the 2 guys", I went 😂😂😂 immediately because I remember that story.
Also huge respect for (a) Edd's effort to keep the victim's body intact and (b) the "I'll take a hero welcome when I bring out someone alive. This is just a job." comment.

  • @ReconDiveRecovery

I dove Wacissa on Day 2 to remove the Victim's remaining gear (fins) & pull the reel. That was a rough one for my friends who did their best. I got Edd's narrative in person around the fire pit one night many weeks later. That recovery was one of the most brutal and tight ones until this.
I also dove for Ben McDaniels on night one, and supported Edd's dive for Larry Lee Higginbotham by rushing my Sidemount 95's full of Trimix to the site & dropping them with Stacy.
I'm honored to have been taught Full Cave by Edd, and to have helped on a few cave recovery dives. Even more amazed by his Live Cave Rescues.
When humans like Edd exist in our lifetime, there's no need for Superhero fantasy films.

That had to be a fun but sketchy dive. A mask with an integrated system like an older one but update would be nice. Printed in both upper portion of the lenses. Small but visable 2 line info layout. Has to be just the text visible though so not to take away any field of vision. Then create a wiring sytem that splits off from the battery bank. I could go on with inventions. Just no time or funding to back it and establish the prototypes.
Glad Sorenson, Young and the DM government found the bodies in a safe and reasonable time frame. Congrates and props. 🤙🏼.
To the interviewer, greatly appreciated for your efforts to discuss all this in somewhat detail.

I am a Scuba Instructor with thousands of dives, in many parts of the world. I have made many cavern dives in N FL. ( where you can see the glow of dayligh). In some of the caverns, when it turns into cave, there is a gate with a sign. It you are not CAVE certified, it you go beyond this point……..YOU WILL DIE.
Thought hard about getting cave trained/certified. The answer was no. Not willing to invest the time, and money into it. It is a major commitment. You also clearly leave the world of recreational diving and enter the world of TECH diving. You also commit yourself to a clearly higher level of risk. No question. I fully respect cave divers, but not for me. And despite my experience and professional level of training, I wouldn’t even think of entering a cave without the extensive and specialized training.

I can block out alot but this is definitely higher level focus/mind control. 👏 Great job Mr. Sorenson.

I suppose it’s easier for you since you know what you are doing, but I was feeling all the panic-inducing part.
Sometimes when you are in a mess yourself, and you think it’s going to be irreversible, you get detached, you are observing yourself in slow motion, but here, without pumping it up, you conveyed that situation where some move could put you beyond recovery.

On cave diving world should be mandatory a sign to leave before every dive: "if I don't come back at this determined time, please call Edd!"

Bodies are not that important. They aren’t in them anymore. It’s like risking your life for a car that’s been totaled. I don’t understand how you get closer from that.

    • @erikawhelan4673

Leaving bodies in caves contaminates the cave, and nobody wants to be exploring a cave and run into a body. Plus families deserve closure.

I'm surprised that Edd, with all his ingenuity, doesn't carry a pneumothorax needle on recoveries. I fully understand not wanting to disturb the bodies, but sometimes you do what you have to and placing a chest tube to vent the decomp gas in the chest/abdominal cavities seems like it would have made this job much easier. Incredible job getting it done either way though.
