Loved Rambo Last Blood. Sly's still got it. Nice to get a hardcore R rated action film in an industry dominated by boring super hero and pc approved snorefests.
Rambo Last Blood is how you do justice to an R rated franchise, unlike Terminator Dark Fate that just looks terrible.
Plus, "professional critics" were outright lying about the film, especially IGN.

Leave the bloke alone! He toured 'Nam in his hey days. Left Nam, went back to the States only to be ridiculed and labeled as a baby killer. Spent a bit of time in Thailand, helped out some POWs and was even betrayed by some aviator wearing dudes with colorful names. All while not even getting any horizontal action with a Vietnamese honey ;)
By now we all know his very "Strong" because the dude from Beverly Hills said so. It's a bit sad really, that a well travelled man doesn't get the proper recognition despite hanging out in Afghanistan, even stopping by in Cambodia and ruining the annual pedophiles convention. He even humblised some snowflakes and taught them that guns are ok!
Hats of to you John J. While critics won't get you, the rest of us are rooting for you! For some, it may be about saying hello to their little friend..while for others its ok to take their lives but don't ever even think about taking their freedom....but for John, it's more than that.....
"You know what you are... what you're made of. War is in your blood. Don't fight it. You didn't kill for your country. You killed for yourself. God's never gonna make that go away. When you're pushed, killing's as easy as breathing"

First Blood was a character movie with action. Rambo himself was a mental casualty of Vietnam searching for peace and normality but never finding it. He goes out searching for his Army buddies only to find they are all dead. He is alone, strained and volatile.
He runs into the cops of a small town that push his buttons and he freaks out making the area into his war zone. He reverts back to what he knows, a killing machine.
Col. Troutman, a father figure, has to talk him down and Rambo finally surrenders in peace.
It’s a great character movie that needs other characters to be developed as well. The movie bad guys have to have their own motivations and their characters well developed.
First Blood was a masterpiece of film.
The second and third movie suffered from brandification. “Rambo” became a generalized term for super soldier. The movies shifted from character to action. The character of Rambo was maintained in the opening sequences but he shifted to super soldier quickly thereafter.
The fourth movie started to center on his character again. Rambo comes “full circle”. He starts off cynical as usual. He is struggling with the “evils” of war within himself.
He agrees to take the missionary group to the rebel camp. On the way he has to kill pirates. Why? Because that was the right thing to do in that situation. He had to do it. He learns that what he is isn’t evil. He doesn’t have to run from it.
When the mercenaries need his help up stream he wants to go because his motivation is saving lives, a righteous thing.
At the end Rambo goes home because he can now live with himself and what he has done.
I don’t know what else can be done with the character. What more can Rambo learn or grow. He is what he will forever be at this point. Maybe Rambo can learn to love others and have family. Definitely going to be worth seeing.

The scheme of the movies is that the movies always want him to change as a person and move on but he can't. But instead of trying to run away anymore, he embraces what he is and chooses to fight.
He's gonna keep fighting, till he can fight no more

Excellent point about the pressure to change but not having the ability.
He does have the desire to change as he tries the Buddhist monk thing. Even then he is more escaping the pressure rather than dealing with it.
In the book of Rambo 2, he actually liked being in the prison. It was structured, ordered and he knew where he stood. Again it was an escape of the pressure rather than dealing with it.
The original book (and the original movie ending) had Rambo commit suicide. The ultimate escape.
Stallone is a master character writer. It is interesting that we can have an intelligent conversation about an action character. Rambo is really deep yet fully knowable, even if Rambo doesn’t really know himself very well.
Maybe his going home at the end of 4 wasn’t him coming full circle but yet another attempt at hiding.

@@voodoochile333 The original cut to First Blood was pretty slow, and then they recut it to be a shorter movie with more action. The point Oliver makes, is that not only are the bad guys one dimensional in this movie, but they aren't even memorable.

Sheriff Will Teasle in First Blood was a good foil for Rambo but was essentially a "my dick is bigger than yours" egotistical king-shit cop on a power trip. His deputies, except for Mitch, the only one with some sense and compassion for Rambo, were clueless buffoons. So the bad guys in First Blood were one-dimensional too. Ah, but First Blood wasn't about the bad guys either--it was about the Vietnam war coming home to America--that's what made it unique and special.

Mexican Cartels are portrayed as "Mexican Cartels"
Rambo is happy and talks but that doesn't count as "something new with the character".
I think I'm gonna have to give the critics 1/5 stars, judging a movie for standards it didn't set is entry level failure. What is next? LotR gets 1/5 cause it is racist to Orcs?

I was a teenager when First Blood came out and loved it, even though,I feel, some of its thunder was silenced due to Viet Nam being a common theme in Hollywood at the time. Today, Rambo IV, is by far my favourite. Sly's supporting cast were memorable, it was fast paced and the violence was second to none.
Haven't seen the latest one yet, but I already know I'm going to enjoy it, thanks to the critics' comments coming out of "left" field. Thankfully, there are still writers and producers in Hollywood still thinking for themselves.
Here is the version the "woke" critics would have drooled over. Sly's name would change to Jussie Rambette, a drag queen, who sets out to teach a group of white, single, middle-aged men the true meaning of social acceptance, through song and dance. The only violence in the whole picture would be the ending, when all the white guys simultaneously jump off a cliff to their death.

2:49 I know Sly is left-handed, but that's not how you're supposed to hold an RPG-7. It has sort of a "reverse" grip configuration and is intended to be fired right-handed (which is why the sights are offset to the left). Your right hand is meant to grasp the front grip, left hand grasps the rear grip. It has a hammer that's manually cocked before firing (which also acts as a safety mechanism). This was all done correctly by Jason Patric in 'The Beast' (aka 'The Beast of War') which came out in 1988.
3:04 In the commentary for either the second or third movie, Sly talks about how impractical it is to fire an M-60E3 (or any other variant) one-handed from the hip. He also fires a PKM from the hip in the third movie, but at least he uses two hands to hold it.
5:27 He's wearing an undershirt, an overshirt, and an M65 field jacket in Arizona! Isn't it, like, always hot there? "Yeah, man! But it's a dry heat!" So it looks like Southwestern summer, but he's dressed for Midwestern fall. Wouldn't that promote heatstroke? I know the M65 field jacket is iconic for warfighters of his era, but I'm thinking practically, not symbolically.
6:53 Wait, so he's right-handed?! But I read that he's left-handed! So does that mean he's ambidextrous? Not that it's a big deal or anything. Being ambidextrous would give him a significant tactical advantage. I'm just wondering why he draws his bow left-handed if he's right-handed. Maybe he's left-eye dominant. But if that were the case, he'd use firearms in a left-handed stance more often.
*Note:* He suffered nerve damage to the left side of his face when he was born, which is why the right side of his mouth opens up more when he speaks or shouts. That's also why he has a speech impediment. The left side of his tongue is numb. His left eye wasn't affected by the nerve damage, though, so he might still be left-eye dominant.
7:33 Rambo seems to prefer older guns with wood furniture. If it took more than one sh0t, you weren't using a Jakobs. He also uses Torgue-like weapons, though. And Vladof, of course, since the first three movies take place during the Cold War era. Colonel Trautman was my favorite character in the first three.
*Note:* We could say the M-16 is a Dahl-like gun and the AR-15 is "Dahl-lite." Technically, since the AR-15 is semi-auto-only, it's more like Jakobs than Dahl. Put aftermarket wood furniture on it to make it look more Jakobsy.

The theatre that I watched the movie in played the uncut version with the rescue scene in the beginning still intact. It's sad that it got cut becouse I think it fits in with the movies theme perfectly, that being that bad things can happen to good people, that even Rambo can't save.

I'm a forty something who grew up with the franchise and I thought it was OK. Certainly not bad, but definitely not the best.
I wasn't completely invested in Rambo's links and relationship to Gabriella (but to be fair, Rambo sailed into Burma for lesser folk.) I hated the journalist character/storyline with a passion. She should've been crucified by the Martinez's for sure once she started snooping. John could've stitched himself up.
Whilst it was great to see the green jacket back and that vast arsenal, I couldn't help feeling that John had lost some of his brooding and that, (coupled with the haircut I suppose ) felt like I wasn't quite watching a Rambo movie. That said, the final act got me back on track and chuckling with glee as the cartel met their match and maker. Truly great stuff, even loving the cassette recorder idea in the tunnels blasting out that Doors song. Pure, unashamed 80's cheese was back!
    6/10

Thanks for the review Oliver! I couldn't agree more with it. These movies are rated R for a reason, they're not for the kids. I thought the film was a little to short but thoroughly entertaining. I even thought the two brother bad guys worked really well together and wished they had some more screen time before the finale. Over all it was a kick ass in your face action movie. Long live Rambo!

Nice review as always, Oliver. Funny you should mention about the alternate opening of the film been removed from the US and UK cuts. That's a shame, since it's one of the best scenes from the movie. I live in Spain and went to see it last night. The scene where Rambo is trying to help rescue the lost hikers is very well done and given the amount of graffic violence that's in the rest of the movie, I cannot understand, for the life of me, why they would remove that particular scene. Stupid, if you ask me.

You can also see some character development there. Rambo felt devastated when he could not save those people. That opening sets the tone of the movie perfectly. It's a crime that they cut that opening in most countries.

Hats off to Sly for putting out such a ferocious movie at his rather ripe age. Nonetheless I prefer part III back from the 80ies when one could "afford" to wear rose tinted glasses concerning world affairs.
There's of course some style issues in Last Blood I didn't like, but I'm nonetheless happy that the movie out the way it did.

First Blood and Rambo (2008) are straight up classics within the genre in my opinion. One of the cool things about the Rambo series is that they have to be seen on the big screen because the action set pieces have scope to them. So going into this one I was super pumped and shockingly I left really disappointed. This one felt and looked like a Redbox rental. It was a tough sit to get through even at 89 minutes.

    *spoilers ahead*
My biggest gripe are the villains.
There are only two interesting villains, the two brothers in charge of the cartel/sextrafficking ring.
Of which the one you'd love to hate, kicks the bucket first, leaving the blander brother for last (kinda like Vaas in Far Cry 3)
The other issue, is that they introduce their luitenants/inner circle, but they kinda get lost in the carnage at the end (and I'm not even sure if they're the cannon fodder in the finale)
Now mind you, this movie does what it sets out to do, and it does it well, but I feel the movie would have been more wholesome if it would have given the villains a bit more space, and maybe have let Rambo wreak more havoc in Mexico before the finale.
Although with the latter, the movie would have run the risk to fall into Rambo 3 territory: all out over the top war, while this set up keeps the focus on John Rambo and his inability to deal with his emotions and demons and how he eventually gives them an outlet.
. There's still bombastic action and violence, but it's well dosed, which keeps the story As silly as this may sound: it keeps the movie more intimate.

I saw the longer version in theaters, with the extra 10 minutes added in. This version begins with the flood sequence in the beginning where Rambo uses his tracking skills to help out people. I can't understand why this version of the film wasn't released everywhere because i do think it really added to the movie and it's story. It also sets up Rambo's current condition and bit of other things that are payed off later on.
Personally, i found this to be a good movie! Not a masterpiece, sure, but still good. Might be even my favorite of all the sequels! Hell, i'd say it's even better than "Taken" or sure as hell better than either of the John Wick sequels.
It told an incredibly violent and depressing story and it ran with it. As some people have complained how some characters aren't fleshed out enough, i think there's a reason why this movie is also called 'Rambo'. It is his story afterall.
I'm also glad you pointed out Stallone's performance as Rambo in this, because i think a lot of people are gonna gloss over it otherwise. I think it's easily the best in the series after First Blood. He goes through probably the widest range of emotions the character has up to this point and just plays it all brilliantly. This is also Rambo as it's scariest i've ever seen and holy hell did i enjoy it!
