Rambo - From First to Last Blood, A Franchise Retrospective

- Sylvester Stallone is one of the greatest action heroes of all time, and more than anything, it was the role of John Rambo that established him as that, and as an icon of the eighties. Between First Blood in 1982 and the upcoming Last Blood later in 2019, Stallone will have portrayed Rambo a total of five times - although there have been some lengthy hiatuses between some of the movies.
In this franchise retrospective, we will look back at the Rambo franchise, explore its beginnings and the issues involved in creating each movie, and the many false starts and creative controversies on the long road towards making “Rambo: Last Blood”.

I can't wait for Rambo 5 God bless Stallone who is over 70 and still making great action movies nobody can replace Stallone in his trilogys
I totally agree, but technically they're not trilogies anymore! I believe the man could continue to be an action hero well into his nineties!
@@keymaster430 I totally agree with you hes a freak of nature
He's a one of a kind muthu fucker! LOL. Still strong as a grizzly at that age! Wow!
Jamaal Davis I just feel sad because that’s probably the last ever Rambo
@@paulapostol4006 I feel you but with Stallone you never know because he said if the movie does good he will make another one and he's making another rocky I don't know how he does it being in his 70s hes definitely cut from a different cloth
If Rambo V is half as good as Rambo 4 it's still going to be the best action film since Rambo 4
I thought Rambo 4 was a very bleh sequel, too much focus on cruelty.
@@Clay3613 People criticized it for being too violent yet Django Unchained and Hateful 8 got a pass. BS
@@TotalMeltdown2 I haven't seen either, but Tarantino is nowhere near as violent as Rambo IV.
Rambo 4 was low budget, short and had a too simple script. It was depressing. Last Blood trailer looks better. I just don't understand why Rambo cut his hair. Long hair was his trademark.
@@suttercaine1987 Yeah, Rambo needs a good mullet
Last blood. I normally think movie titles are stupid or meh. But this title is genuinely amazing. 👏👏👏
It feels like with this movie for years they made it overcomplicated in terms of its plot and title but just making it simple was the solution all along
It’s simple and yet a lot more creative than the title for the 2008 movie.
did you eat a lot of paint chips as a child ?
No. Why do you ask? What are paint chips?
Yet there will be another one Stallone says.
I'll have to give Stallone credit for a brilliant career and some damn good work. I have to say that because at my age, I've been with him since the beginning and that translates into a literal lifetime (for me ) of entertainment. His rebirth has been amazing and I'm sure with his skills and experience, I trust he will not blow this film. Stallone has earned the accolades and trust of his fans.
They actually considered Rambo vs Bigfoot. That's awesome!
This would be a great and fun Netflix spinn off exclusive, either Bigfoot, Predator or something else, make it bloody, griddy mantastic.
@@4Everlast Keep an eye out for in search of yowie aka bigfoot rampage coming later this year to youtube
@@timefilm Damn xD
Dude Action Actor,& Film,not Sci-fi Film
Before Chuck Norris goes to bed at night he looks under his bed to see if John Rambo isn't hiding there
Nah, Norris and Rambo probably kick back in bar in Thailand, drink beers, and swap stories about rescuing POW's and their days in 'Nam. Monsters check under their beds for Norris and Rambo.
They sleep in bunk beds
I think John's Favorite pass time is playing with Plastic, and Chuck should check his car, before getting some Stoggies from his 7-11.
I wish John Rambo was hiding under my bed.
That dig at Jake Skywalker was perfect.
Charlie Sheen said that at the premiere of "Hot Shots: Part Deux", Sly came up to him to thank him for saving him from being forced into making Rambo IV. At least it delayed it for a while...
Stallone willingly made Rambo IV so obviously he warned up to Rambo. This is obviously one last hurrah on his own terms.
...
SPOILERS
...
And yes, he's gonna MASSACRE narcos! XD
We need Tpper Harly and HOT SHOTS PART 3D!
Johnny Carson also did a parody of the Rambo character on The Tonight Show, complete with a body suit that made him look like Rambo.
I'm so glad they're keeping the series somewhat grounded in reality and not having him hunt a mutant or whatever.
I'd love to see the 3 hour cut of First blood.
Agree, sometimes the longer, the Better.after all when you cut,you sometime cut too much out, then it hurts the over-all effect of the Film.
@@michaelmetzger3662 obviously something didn't work well with 3 hour Rambo and he's kept all the sequels short, but as a fan I'm sure I'd like the extra build up.
With original ending, might have been another Apocalypse Now or Deer Hunter.
Originally Rambo was about a guy who had done everything right, done his best, served his country, and got slapped in the face when he got home. When they went too far, he destroyed them. It is kind of like "Don't create warriors and then spit in their face". This was the core story. I think it is a problem many veterans still face.
I am glad Rambo is settling old scores. It is a rounded finish to the saga.
I would definitely enjoy one last turn of the Rambo wheel. :)
He may keep this Movie Franchise going a bit Longer, one can only hope(Myself). As great as John Rambo is,he might be Brought back to Teach The Army Recon, how to be a Better Killing Machine,& tricks of this Trade could see that as Happening,2 if not 3 more Films.
Awesome retrospect! I am looking forward to a 5th Rambo, so hopefully it lives up.
I can't wait! After Last Blood he needs to do one more R rated Expendables.
Stallone is planning to do The Expendables 4 it’s in development
I have faith in Stallone. He's a smart guy.
He is. But failed before, like in Rocky V and the pointless Creed movies. Let´s wait.
@@MrCarpen7er The Creed movies were not Stallone's idea.
@@CapitanJusticia I watch Stallone´s movies since the 70´s. I needed you to tell me that..God ! He decided to be in them. That´s my point.
I'd would to see a prequel to Rambo. When trautman, met Rambo. Anybody else????. Mr.stallone, please make it happen.
Lets hope Last Blood isn't another Hellboy 2018...
I've got the strange feeling, that Stallone will only have a short cameo in Rambo V, probably suffering a stroke before passing on the torch to his lesbian granddaughter, "Ann Rambo".... what this show needs, is a strong, independent woman, possibly played either either by one of the Game of Throne chicks or that girl from the last Avengers flick... the one named after that obnoxious-smelling french cheese......
@@fenriz218 That would cause an outcry and make people claim SJW.
Passing the torch to a lady is fine, but the film is named rambo...
so the film should be about him before passing the torch to someone else.
@@ccateni28 ... and there's Poe's Law, confirmed yet again... :-/
@@fenriz218 What is Poe's Law?
@@ccateni28 Google is your friend, m8...
Rambo last blood was just fucking metal.
Remember when action films made men and women grow muscles and balls as they left the theater to go eat bacon wrapped steaks and fire guns into the air?
Well this was the last strike of it.
I've seen all the Rambo Movies and I have enjoyed each one.
I'm glad they didn't go the predator route the plot sounded too much like the Rambo cartoon.
Funny how people actually take the Rambo fighting alongside the Taliban claim seriously even though most of the tribes that fought the Soviets formed the Northern Alliance which fought the Taliban.

@@user-jv7gr1jb3r .........................................................................................
One thing you haven't addressed is that the Mexican cartel storyline was the initial pitch for Rambo, but Stallone shot it down in favor of the Burmese civil war plotline. This was well-explained in the bonus material on the Blu-Ray version.
Kind of reminds me of how A Good Day to Die Hard was based on an earlier idea for Die Hard 4 Willis talks about on the commentary. And well, if nothing else Last Blood is better than that. Lol
This could have been RAMBO: NEW BLOOD, with a shoehorned female lead, so I’m happy to see Sly back.
This movie has already been made in the comic books. Look up iron sights published by Splatto comics.
I remember seeing Midnight's Edge at 10k subscribers, and now its 112k subscribers!
Rambo wouldn't be Rambo if he didn't disembowel someone with his K-bar.
Hi Midnight's Edge, I love your videos, I love Rambo. Your Bob Shaye interview reigns supreme. Thank you
Thanks!
Huge fan of sci-fi here but a Predator type movie with Rambo somehow doesn't seem right. Rambo is more a real-life character, a war hero. I hope they make a more real and plausible story.
The last two Rambo’s that Stallone did are great to me, because it had the balls to show the actual dark side of what happens to Christians in certain 3rd world communists countries and the Sex Slave trade that still exists today.
Seeing I ended up liking the last RAMBO I am looking forward to this. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the end.
So happy to hear the metoo bs didnt ruin this movie too. I was expecting to hear Rambo leads a group of female mercenaries Yada yada yada. Thank you sly I needed a fun action flick.
Just goind out my local theater tonight after having seen Rambo V LAST BLOOD , a long 10 years awaited movie with average expectation...
I have mixed feeling about this poorly excuted movie....
---First Blood : a punch in the face back in the 80's 10/10 Truly a MASTER PIECE From the Director!
---First Blood Part II , one of the GREATEST action/adventure movie with Indiana Jones. 10/10
---Rambo III : the most UNDERRATED action/adventure movie , personally my fav #1 in my holy trinity with Predator (1987) and Robocop (1987) , Technically speaking , Rambo III is the epitome of the franchise (along with Predator and Robocop) in terms of pure Action filming expertise and should be studied in cinema schools theses days! 10/10
---John Rambo IV : so well directed by stallone himself , its unbelievable ! and the gruesome violence was so over the top , it was ridiculously good and satisfying and the ending was so well deserved and well applied. (very very good (not excellent but good) movie in overall aspects) 8/10
---Rambo V Last Blood : Directed by Adrian Grunberg....what else should be mentionned ?
this movie would have been SO much better is Stallone would have keep the long hair wig with Familly color Half German Half Navajo Bandana , remembering in flash back time with his grandfather learning him how to hunt with traditional bow & knife....and going to hunt the cartel inside their territory with traditional silent weapons and die after having saved the girl! ......but instead they shortened his hair , put him a achy breaky heart cowboy hat wich is a total disaster and decided to create a HOME ALONE LETHAL EDITION (but poorly executed)!! I will end writting because i will mention everything thats bad about this movie and im tired talking/wasting time about this cow shit totally dried under the hot arizona sun............ 4/10
For me , the whole serie wrap up and end with the John Rambo IV.
I like Stallone and the Rambo franchise, but I don't know about a 75 year old John Rambo. The ending to John Rambo was a nice bookend to the series and it should have ended there (just as Indiana Jones should have ended with Last Crusade)
This one will be his demons coming home to roost, and there was no Indiana Jones after Crusade.
sojonin there was Indiana Jones 4 released in 2008
@@scottknode898 You're mistaken, no fridges were ever nuked, DID NOT happen. Like the new "Star Wars" films, none of it exists!
Very excited!! I don’t go to the theatre’s much anymore but I’ll be there opening night for this one
I love every and each rambo movie they are a master piece
Really excited for this one. Rambo V was a surprise, and I’m hooping this one up the ante.
I think it was the mid 80s since I last saw a Rambo movie. I've been meaning to rewatch the first 2 Rambo movies & catchup on all that I've missed since then, but never seem to get around to it. Looks like I need to try to catch up quick. Thanks for the vid!
Love this Character. One of my all time favorites. I'll definitely go to the theatre to Watch John Rambo do his thing !
This is it gang. No more Rocky's, no more Rambo's. It gets put to rest. Incredible career. Today's special effects alone should make this movie #1 at the box office. Can't wait.
I wasn't even aware a new Rambo came out at all.. (I didn't even see the last Rambo but I love the 1st) Then I heard the backlash. The huge split between the audience liking it and critics hating it got me to see the trailer and see what the fuss was all about. I liked the trailer and now I'm seeing the movie, thanks midnight's edge.
This was a great film. Saw it tonight. I highly recommend it. It shows very accurately what Mexican border towns are like: violent, lawlessness, drug cartels, drug lords, sexual slavery. This must be the most accurate depiction of Mexico ever made. The end of it where the Mexican cartel takes the bait, goes over the border illegally and comes to Rambo's farm reminds me of what happened to the thieves in "Home Alone" but the cartel members die miserable deaths. And the leader gets the Aztec treatment from Rambo. I recommend the film to everyone. Young people should be forced to watch it so that they see the dangers that lurk south of the border
I felt degraded and dehumanized after I left the theater," Morrell said, expanding on his thoughts on Rambo: Last Blood in an email to Newsweek. "Instead of being soulful, this new movie lacks one," Morrell said. "I felt I was less a human being for having seen it, and today that's an unfortunate message."Sep 20, 2019
Rambo 4 had a good ending, he finally went home but no, now we have to kill him Logan style, I hope not. I don't understand this idea of bringing back franchises and killing off the character. Rocky 6 was a good ending, no, lets bring back and give him cancer. Star Wars the Last Jedi, no, lets kill off Luke, let him enjoy his fresh milk while Han is dead. And now the director wants to kill off John Wick too...unbelievable. You're not going to top the ending of Rambo 4, no freakin way.
Creed 1 and 2 were good films. :)
I didn't care of them that much, they're good films but nothing special.
Rambo 4 was the perfect ending to the series.
Rambo will kick ass this time and will show all the others who forgot or don't let them, how to do it. Good old school baby.
Can Sept. 20th get here any quicker? I can't wait to see this!
One of my all time favorite movie series.
Stallone writes and directs masterfully.
Every Rambo its excellent into his style.
I've watched and enjoyed all of the franchise and look forward to this one.
After John Rambo I really don't need another sequel. He arrived home, finally settled, he is craeed but he can rest finally. And also, John Rambo was an amazing movie, the best after the original imo.
Very nice retrospective. I liked the last one quite a bit
Regarding your last video, you made a point of saying that Star Wars wasn’t on the horizon when the GOT show runners decided the end point of the series.
While this is correct, it seems we both have forgotten that, in fact, there was another HBO project the two were gearing up for as early as three-four years ago: the ill fated confederacy alternate future show.
I submit to you, dear edgers, that this was the project that caused the showrunners to pin 2019 as an end point. And when that fell through and Star Wars reared it’s heavily scarred head, the two saw no reason to not continue as planned.
Case closed. Thank you.
"This is what we do, who we are! Live for nothing, or die for something!" Rambo-2008
Rambo 4 was a masterpiece, the body count has to be off the charts for this to be awesome!
Hi hope it does stay true to the character and previous movies.
Thanks for the review. Would have been great if it was longer 😊
Love all the Rambo Movies
Glad we get Crenna instead of Douglas.Crenna was born to play Trautman
I love Sylvester and just about every project he's been a part of !I'm definitely happy about last blood ,and I do hope the character of John Rambo survived to someday hunt a beast worthy of perhaps a Rambo last stand in which the Rambo character is officially retired ,with the beast's head mounted over a fire place in Rambo's ranch house ! Fade to Black and as Rambo finnally achieves a peace of mind and long needed rest !
Rambo 4 was awesome. I really liked that film.
As a Hispanic, Last Blood was awesome loved it.
I like all Sylvester Stallone's movies👍
We Will Be Watching 👀 , And Listening 👂 Very Closely .
Them Green berets are real badasses
I love how same people continue to do and influence next episodes of original characters.
Sly is great in what he does
I have faith that Stallone will do this character justice as he did with Rocky. I can't wait for this film, i know its going to be action packed and leave the politics at the door and remind us what Escapism is all about.
After Rambo III, I was pretty much done. Never saw the 4th movie. Not really jazzed about the fifth.
As a rambo fan I thought the 4th film was actually really well written. Its about Christian missionaries that get taken hostage on a humanitarian mission by the Burmese army. If your looking for nonstop hardcore blood and guts action this one has it.
You can't top Rambo III, only make it different... Rambo 4 belongs to a different decade, and it is felt, it's just not the same, but interesting anyway.
I am an unashamed huge fan of Stallone, Rocky and Rambo. That being said, I thought the fourth film ended beautifully and should have been left there. Stallone has had a miraculous track record with reinvigorating his “dead” franchises/characters, something Hollywood, as a whole, has failed at miserably. How long will he continue to press his luck before one flops? He had every opportunity to end on a high note. I’m not sure I want to go see this one.
The movie was very different, yet still pretty good.
You guys gotta cover some Terminator too. So much great stuff from and present to discuss.
This was interesting. I had no idea there were so many Rambo sequels.
There really haven't been that many Rambo movies since the first one with long gaps in between so I don't have much apathy towards it the way I do something like the Terminator franchise with its "This time we really mean it" vibe they try to sell us. I enjoy the Rambo franchise so I'll be up for another installment.
Rambo 4 was my last Rambo movie. I hear it didn't do so well at the box office. I also hear more women saw it than the Charlie's Angels reboot. Nice!!
It didn’t do so well because I’m pretty sure people were excited to watch Iron Man and The Dark Knight, which I have to say even though their both good films, Rambo deserves much more attention
I would have LOVED to se that “soulful journey” damn shame it’s gone the way of the money men. :-( Btw. As always, damn impressive video.
love this video :-0)
This is Great! But... I would love to see the Rambo going after the Beast Movie!!!!🌟💪👍🌟💪👍🌟💪👍
I look forward to the up coming Rambo movie!!
World needs a 1980's blood and Guts style hero film maybe it teach these young boys to want to be tough again.
Rambo: Last Blood is an action/adventure movie starring a protagonist who seeks revenge for a terrible wrong. Faulting it as being insufficiently politically correct is a very poor and unprofessional view. Sites which allow audiences to vote rank Last Blood higher than any movie currently out. Like Death Wish starring Charles Bronson, critics hate this movie and audiences love it.This is a solid example of the genre, and deserves a solid score of 10. Very worthy addition to the series.
Sly is my freakin hero. Very excited for this final war.
Am very much looking forward to a new Rambo film that has not been diluted by the current political climate in Hollywood.
Saw Mount Si in one of the pictures, Ive hiked that mountain.
God Bless Stallone and thank God for Stallone. "The Last Real Action Hero" of cinema. While his 1980s rivals Arnie, Willis, Norris, Van Damme etc have gone either soft, WOKE, straight to video or retired, Stallone has gone hard "R" for this greatest of action hero characters for himself and importantly, his millions of loyal fans. Whether the film will be decent of not remains to be seen, but at least we're going to be treated to an old fashioned tale of when "men were men".
After this Rambo, Stallone will go down in history as the number 1 action hero, the other guys, are tired.... (Arnie, Willis, Van Dammit, norris, sea gull,)
This is going to be Great! I can feel it in my...Blood!
Love ya Sylvester and of course John, John. Now let's get on with what you do best...
Fuck yes, some good old 80's senless violence in the pursuit of justice, I'm 100% in.
I love the Rambo movies even tho I’m 19 I’m really excited for Last Blood
Oh I'm definitely going to watch it
Can’t wait! Would also enjoy the soulfoul journey even in book form
one last time ...lets go!!! Iam in
I am very excited to see a fifth Rambo
This is from Hong Kong. Sorry for my mediocre English. Hope I can express myself clearly. I feel sorry that the Rambo series has already come to Last Blood, which implies that there will be no more sequels. Otherwise there is now a very good plot suggestion for Mr. Stallone: help Hong Kong people to fight the fucking evil Hong Kong police force controlled by the fucking CCP, and rescue the many protester victims caught, imprisoned, tortured, raped and killed at various secret torture camp sites in here since mid June this year. Please if some American filmmakers would consider making such a movie. I think it definitely will be a worldwide box-office success. Thank you.
Your English is fine. I would love to see Rambo take the fight there, and on a personal note, I am angered the international community is not doing more to help the people of Hong Kong. -Andre
Should reboot with strong women characters who teach Rambo a lesson about toxic masculinity.
@WWG1WGA! USA I guess your sarcasm radar needs a tune up lol
Am I the only one who likes all the Rambo movies??
I liked the movie, good story, easy to follow and I'm glad no sjw woke bullshit was in it. Especially when he tells the one mexican girl who knows the girl that disappeared to shut up and fuck off. Loved that scene. He was brutal in this movie.
If there's ever a remake of Rambo, with out sly. I'll go rocky, on them.
I wait for Rambo Last Blood "part 2" !
I always wanted a sequel to the first one where the sherriff comes to Rambo's home town for revenge.
Great video. Shame Hollywood did not go for the script written by both Sly and writer of First Blood
The trailer looks good.
The Best Hero Ever♥️🔥
Looking forward to it
Sorry to say, that image was not of director Ted Kotchif. Not sure, but I think that was just the cinematographer.
Don't care about new Rambo, but if it let us get a new Hot Shots movie, that would be cool. :-P
I'll be there opening night!!!!
