    Thanks for the test. It's too bad that you turned around just when the RapidFire was starting to drop out. If you hadn't, you would have seen the CV2.0 go way further and leave the RapidFire way behind. I'm looking forward to your next test that if not at a greater distance, will at least be in a more challenging environment.

    One module I'd like to see in the comparison test is the original Fat Shark FSV2445 antenna switching diversity module.
    It would perhaps be a useful reference as to what the early days were like compared to the ClearView, Rapidfire etc..
    That and it's what's been in my goggles for 2.5 years now, it serves me well in the big open spaces I fly, yes the dip switches for the bands are annoying but all my quads are on E1 so not really a problem.

    Let's say you put a Mazda Miata and a Lamborghini side by side on the same 60MPH (100KPH) road. They roll down the road, side by side at the speed limit. This makes it hard to tell which one has the best performance, doesn't it? But put them both on a challenging road and everything changes. So if you fly in a place without too many walls between you and your quad, or no stands of trees and bushes, or any concrete walls or rebar reinforced floors or structures, without much multipathing, and not too far away... well, you get the point. Now I'm not suggesting that you go out and buy a Lambo. But the CV2.0 isn't 10X the price either. Anyway, here's a test with a bit more challenge to it: ua-cam.com/video/jAI-TK7qPbY/v-deo.html

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 років тому +1

      I appreciate that the CV may shine when even longer range tests are done. It may not be obvious for those who don't live here, but the "behind the barn" section of my FPV receiver test flight path is designed to challenge the sensitivity of the modules. During that section of the test, many receiver/vtx combos will completely go to static at 25 mW output power.
      For perspective, I am standing on the porch of my house. The signal must go through two walls made of 8" logs (it's a log home). Or it could theoretically bounce into a window and out another window. The signal is also going through my barn, which has walls of 1.5" thick timber planks. And, of course, there are plenty of "stands of trees and bushes" etc. on my property.
      Although the 60 mph test would not fully show the Lambo's capabilities, the Lambo would still beat the Miata to 60 by a fair margin. In the same way, I think this test does show a clear advantage for the ClearView during the most challenging parts.
      The thing that is very difficult to communicate in a test like this is the difference that an advanced module's processing makes even when signal strength is high. With an advanced module like CV or RF, the picture is clear and stable, even when RSSI is high. There is no diversity flashing and minor breakup is reduced or eliminated. This gives a much more pleasant experience which is impossible to convey simply by looking at a UA-cam video. But short of letting people fly the modules themselves, this seems to be the best we can do.

    I love my clearview 2.0 over the Rapidfire. Sure the groundstation isn't as easy as a module to just pop in and fly, but my clearview lives mounted on my taranis so its not that much of a burden.
    Plus in this video all Bardwell is doing is flying a single quad around in a space with virtually zero RF interference or multipathing. Range is not what the Rapidfire or the Clearview are about... they are all about that good video even with impossible RF environments. This video does NEITHER receiver any true justice and its why they appear to be so equally matched. Take a Clearview 2.0 in a multipath environmnent versus the Rapidfire and the Clearview 2.0 is going to win by a large factor. I know this because I own both of them, and have flown hundreds of packs on each one.
    Lets also point out the FACT that the Rapidfire does not agree with the Fatshark built in DVR at all! Rapidfire is known for dropping frames in the DVR like its no ones business, even when you have perfect video signal. That makes posting your video of your runs a lot more difficult if chunks are missing. The Clearview and Clearview 2.0 just simply do not have this problem!

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 років тому

      I am not convinced by the argument that this is not a challenging RF environment. That argument may be truthful, but the fact is, a HUGE number of pilots fly in an environment exactly like this. So is the conclusion that those pilots would be just as well off buying a True-D? If that is your argument, then I submit this is still a valid and useful test.
      But I don't buy it. I can see a MASSIVE difference flying RapidFire in this environment vs. flying True-D or another "traditional" module. If that difference does not come out in the test, then it's because there is a difference between looking at a screen in replay, and flying the actual module. Unfortunately there's no way to overcome that without putting the module in the pilot's hands.
      Your argument about ClearView not dropping frames in Fat Shark DVR does not match my experience. When I did the very first versions of my testing, I used Fat Shark DVR to record. (I have since moved to taking GoPro recordings of the actual goggle screens, which I feel is more accurate.) I had to do a ton of work to sync up all the footage around the dropped frames, and yes, I had to sync dropped frames on the ClearView too. This is more a criticism of the Fat Shark DVR than the CV module, however.
      I am going to be releasing a test of the CV and RF module in a high multipath environment today, so we will see how the claims bear out.

    • @rotorgrrlfpv8568
      @rotorgrrlfpv8568 5 років тому

      @@JoshuaBardwell Our experiences just aren't lining up. I have yet to drop a frame on my HDO Dvr with the Clearview 2.0. On Rapidfire is a constant thing I can almost promise that for every 2 minutes of recording with the rapidfire in the loop I will drop 2-3 seconds of video. For a while I was super frustrated by this because I did not realize the association between the rapidfire and the dvr until I heard a bunch of others at IO talking about the same thing. When we use the MultiGP provided groundstations, there is no frames being dropped by the DVR, but if you use your Rapidfire there is. Not sure why I am finding this to be the case and you are not, but perhaps will more time and more packs spent flying by each of us and others in the community a consensus will be reached that is more flushed out.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  5 років тому

      @@rotorgrrlfpv8568 I suggest that, unless you are syncing your DVR footage to GoPro then you won't notice some dropped frames. And since you're racing, I suspect you aren't running GoPro to compare. It's really easy to demonstrated whether a DVR has dropped frames. Fly with a GoPro, accurately sync the start, then after 2-3 minutes of recording, see if the ending is synced. I have never yet seen the Fat Shark DVR stay in sync over the course of a whole flight. Maybe the new 1.2a firmware improves this.
      I agree CV has better maintenance of sync to DVR than RF in most circumstances. I just dispute the claim that CV never drops frames.

This is not just a "freestyle" thing as you were implying by your "since you're racing" thing. Even before using the 3s I was using a normal fpv cam accompanied by the micro split cam for the HD recording. So yeah got plenty of experience dealing with this.
      I will give you that its probably not "fair" to say that CV NEVER DROPS FRAMES EVER but I really wasn't even saying that lol. Just that in my experiences I haven't seen it happen when in comparision to the Rapidfire where its a constant issue.

I would not even entertain a ground station because I simply don't want to lug around a tripod, cables and battery packs etc. If clearview came up with a nice goggle module at a price closer to Rapid Fires $150, then I would at least entertain giving them a try. If they are only trying to target racers with this product then there is problem with that as well. Why would I spend 300 bucks on a ground station that really performs its best doing long range stuff, when most race courses are on a soccer field and everyone is running 25mw and never getting more than 50 yards from the ground station. Tranversly why would I want to lug a ground station when I am out scouting new spots, or ripping in the forest. It may have a purpose for certain situations but I don't see it being a convenient replacement to my Rapid Fire goggle module.

      @@JoshuaBardwell Thank you for quick reply. I know your movie about similar problem. My looks different. I had propellers. I push the throttle just a little bit, when I back the throttle the engine stops but if i cross some point about 10-15% of throttle the motor start to speed up to 100% of power. Maybe is soldered something wrongly or there is short circuit.

    Just from this small test I would say rapid fire is still the champ. A ground station at a cost of close to $300 vs a module at about half the cost that performed roughly the same? 🤔 no brainer in my book. I think clearview needs to go back to the drawing board. With rapid fire being out there your gonna have to bring something truly exceptional to warrant a $300 price tag in todays market. It’s not 2017 anymore. Rapid fire has completely changed the game.

    • @SueMyChin

      Clayton Fisher Not if you're flying long range over mountains or water it doesn't. The threat of one lost quad justifies the extra cost alone. For everyone else fair enough.

      @@Ryanfriedman96 but why would you want to change settings from your phone? Take off your goggles, pick up your phone, open an app, turn Bluetooth on, what for it to connect etc. Takes way too long. That's what smart audio is for. And modules have osd in your goggles to do all these things. Even if I wasn't flying and at home it's just as easy to plug it straight into a PC. I don't understand where the benefit is?
