    As someone who regularly operates a Flow brand waterjet very similar to the one you've replaced, I assure you that with the enclosure completely filled with water there can still be damage caused to the bottom of the tank.
    Upon changing out our intensifier it is regular practice to allow the pump to run for 15 mins without abrasive. This is to ensure there are no issues with the rebuild of the intensifier. In the past we have had an operator follow this procedure with abrasion accidentally turned on. This did leave a tiny hole into the bottom of the tank.
    It was a huge pain in the ass for 2 months (no on believed me when I said there is probably a hole in the bottom of the tank). So each day we while operating the waterjet another and I would vaccum about 75 gallons of water from the floor with a 5 gallon shop vac. Finally when emptying garnet from the tank during maintenance, management was talking into investigating the 'leak' (it was hard to ignore at this point). The solution to the issue was simple. It was filled with weld.
    I saw someone ask in the comments if you can cut a waterjet out of a waterjet. The answer is yes, all non mechanical parts can be cut on a waterjet. We have refurbished our enclosure multiple times this way. All internals (pumps, attenuator, intensifier etc...) are pressed, or precission lathed and machined. They would need to be worked on other machinery or outsourced.

    I think you might mean they've been hardened and annealed, and reheating them softens the steel again.The hardening process already strains the material quite a bit (you're literally forcing it into a crystal structure that does not want to exist at room temp) so you typically want to only do it once.

    Water jet operator here, you can blow a hole in the bottom of the tank. We hired a new guy and we were teaching him how to weigh the Garnet, do the nozzle test and flow test after cleaning the nozzle and mixing tube. The default test is 60 seconds. We never do that we only run it for maybe 5 seconds. He ran all the test for 60 seconds. Pump only, water only, Garnet flow/weigh then water plus abrasive. The water plus abrasive is just like a cut and he blew a hole in the bottom of the tank in 45 seconds of the 60 second test. The tank was about 50% full of abrasive. It was high pressure at 45K PSI and .030 mixing tube.

    I operate a Mitsubishi X3-612 with a KMT Streamline Pro 2 that runs at 90k PSI. AKS Water Cutting now makes this machine but it's really an amazing machine. It's also a 5-axis but only goes about 6° to compensate for taper on thicker material. In currently running a 12 foot tilt rack gear on it that's 4" thick steel and will take the next 20 hours to complete. Good luck!

    Is there a known ratio to how much the Water jet stream ”cones” over distance? Or is there a changing focus point?
    Like if you cut something thick, turn it upside down, i supose the cut is wider on the bottom? Or is it?

    • @minitrucker007
      @minitrucker007 5 років тому +1

      linus452345 yes depending on what size mixing tube you are running the water will cone out at different ratios. Most mixing tubes are set for .060 over the surface cutting so that’s the point where the stream will cut a perfect .030 cut like the mixing tube. As you get further away the cut gets wider.
      Considering they now have a 5 axis you can program the nozzle to compensate for the sway left on the part so it will cut 100% straight from top to bottom unlike a 3 axis machine.

    So with this jet are you able to cut easily chipped material like silicon carbide? I work with that and tungsten carbide all the time but I'm grinding it all and holding .001" much of the time. I'm curious to see how the water jet handles material like that.

      It's not 'ultra purified'. It's 1 stage filtered and softened tapwater. They have to soften it because, Utah. The tapwater sucks.

      @@punk105 I watched that one but didn't see a big filter bank. Do you recall the time in which it was shown? The pump doesn't need a ton of filtration. It's just as important to make sure it doesn't starve for input.

    Love your videos. Looked like cleaning it out before you got that extactor was a pain. That extraction machine is the ticket to clean that thing. I've got a lapidary slab saw for cutting stone. When it's time for me to clean the saw / reservoir, it looks similar to what you're dealing with. Thick nasty sludge. I tried a few different tools and techniques. Lot of bad ideas but one seemed to be the ticket. I've got a 4" gold dredge that'll suck all that junk out no problem as long as you've got access to some water. Have the discharge feed onto some screens so you can see if there's any hidden treasures in there. If interested, check out venturi suction dredge to see what I mean. Curious if your garnet feed system utilizes a similar technique? Anyways, this is probably all useless information that you already know or dont need now that you've got that cool extraction unit. Again, love your show. You always find cool new things to slice and dice. Just a thought... can you cut through that crazy bulletproof glass that'll stop a .50 B.M.G.? Cut a magnesium bar without it igniting? Maybe a plasma ball? This one might be a stretch but seeing how you guys are like UA-cam famous now, now that you've got this new machine, hook it up to have a standoff with your old machine. Waterjet against waterjet. Guessing it'd be a pain to set up and catastrophic for the loser... but it'd be so cool to watch.

    I have seen this before and wondered when the stream is not cutting anything why don’t you turn it off and turn it back on? Is it hard to turn off and turn it on fast?
