Sequel to the original PlayStation launch title, Wipeout. This is the Europe release of the game (as its the one I own).
The original was a good game and was a system seller at launch as it was so different to anything we had been playing on our 16bit machines prior. While it was a good game, it wasn't a great game due to its difficulty and controlling the craft. This sequel fixed all those issue to bring us an awesome game in the wipeout series. The first game might be best remembered for its banging soundtrack and its no different here.
Game progression is straight forward. Complete each of the 3 speed tiers to unlock the phantom challenge. Then play the 2 new tracks at phantom speed before finally playing the piranha challenge which contains all tracks at phantom speeds. Completing this unlocks the piranha ship which I show off in one last race at the end of the video.
I play mostly in chase view as I find the game nearly unplayable in bumper view although I do switch between the modes occasionally to show off the speeds and affect on the view. I switch through the different craft at each race to show them being played.

I really like the aesthetic of this game, and I'm convinced that it's not possible to pull off with modern graphics. See, whenever newer games try to replicate Wipeout, they always look too clean, too perfect. I love the grit and psychedelic atmosphere depicted in this game, it's like a kind of cyber dystopia. The soundtrack, which would probably be called "dated" by some, is the perfect accompaniment for the aesthetic they were going for, I think.
Lol at the soundtrack being dated. Underworld, The Prodigy, The Chems, Leftfield don't age.

100% right about the aesthetics and how the modern games look WAY too sterile and clean. You got the impression playing Wipeout 2097 that the events were taking place in cities with trash on the streets, crime, and homeless people - the modern incarnations of the game all look too nice and colourful and neat.
I don’t think it’s impossible for them to make a similarly gritty game these days, it’s just that they don’t even try.
The soundtrack is timeless, however. The more recent games have really forgettable, elevator music soundtracks.
You can try GRIP, the modern reboot of Rollcage, which was made by the same developers of Wipeout
As someone who grew up in the 90's listening to this kind of music and Wipeout being one of my first games ever along with Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid, I agree so much with what you said. I recently tried the new Wipeout(s) and they don't have that kind of atmosphere as this game!
I love how dark and grim this game is. The soundtrack is also perfect.
This and ace combat were my favorite as a kid.

one thing I really liked about this game was the announcer was a scary man voice and not some soft spoken female ai. this to me sounded much more serious.

There is a playlist on spotify with the songs on. Only thing missing is the sounds of the craft.
Legendary game, stunning soundtrack. Pure gold. Still listen to the CD now and again, this was a very special time indeed. The original Playstation, in full flight. Probably my most favourite console ever.

I will NEVER forget when I first saw this. The VERY first PS1 game I ever played. And the graphics are still impressive after 20 years. Wow. Was it really that long ago? The feels!!!! (Fucking LOVE the music in these games)

the wipeout games were always refernce in therms of graphics! Watch wipeout hd on ps3! Looks so awesome! The game looked so awesome that they will bring it out on ps4 with a little graphical tweaks and it looks still fresh and modern and u to date!
And what's even crazier is that Wipeout 3 somehow looks, alot better. Not sure how they pulled it off, but it's the Ps1 at its graphical peak for sure.
I wish there was a HD 60fps port of this game.
The Prodigy - fire starter is my absolute favorite soundtrack. Every time that song is played on Spotify I think of this game.
1998-me would have gone apeshit by the fact that in 2019 you can play three Wipeout games in it's entirety, from inside an antigravity vehicle's cockpit, in real life size, against other human contenders in friggin' virtual reality... Back then i thought the movie Lawnmower Man was the coolest thing ever and dreamt one day something similar would actually be possible within my lifetime.. I sort of re-lived my childhood fantasy while playing Wipeout Omega in VR, at the humble age of 40.. This 2nd game was my introduction to Wipeout, i rented it along with a Playstation at my local videostore for many weekends with my friends. Staying up all night smoking pot and drinking too much beer, puking allover the couch while my parents were on vacation. Great memories!🥴🤢🤮

That and the killer techno music.
That startup sound, followed by FSOL - We Have Explosive... fucking chills. This game, as well as the Hackers soundtrack, is what got me into "techno" back in the mid 90's. This game has such an amazing soundtrack; FSOL, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Photek, etc..

Crash Bandicoot, Toshinden, Cool Boarders, Tomb Raider, Ace Combat, Rayman, The Die Hard Trilogy with TV-Gun - but especially Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Biohazard (Resident Evil) and WipeOut I spent so much time in back in the PSX days.
This game still looks and sounds gorgeous.

It was WipEout XL in the US because - apologies to all US citizens - someone at Psygnosis [was] determined that the US audience wouldn’t understand the idea of 100 years in the future in the title and would question where the previous 2096 games were. The original proposed title for the US was WipEout XS - Excess - but I pointed out that this could be interpreted as ‘extra small’ and thus wasn’t ideal!”

Pathetic. I also read somewhere they didn't want to port Gran Turismo to the US because it was too "intellectual" for us. Lot of anti-American prejudice in the 90's I guess. But if they didn't sell their games here, they wouldn't have been proven wrong... they also wouldn't have made nearly as much MONEY.

played the absolute hell out of this game, still have a quick go now and again just because of how rewarding it is feeling the tail just scraping round a tight corner without losing speed.

Love this game. All of the WipEout XL series is excellent. The music takes me away. The scenery and sound effects are awesome. And the full 3D immersion into the game is a full experience. This game takes me to where I want to be after work. So addicted.
I imagine there's a few copyright claims on the soundtrack. This game introduced me to The Prodigy.
All the tracks were licensed. Some were written especially for the game. (e.g 'P.E.T.R.O.L)
Impressive run! Played this again a few years back and I still had muscle memory from nearly 20 years back. Truly this was the "git gud" of racing games.
It's mad how much I can actually remember from this game. I must have played it a lot back in the day. This was easily in my top 3 PS1 games. It just felt really nice to play.

One thing that always personally stuck 2097 out among the other series is how the speedometer reflected the sense of speed most realistically. When flying 200-300kph+ it felt like I was actually going that fast.

Takes me back to my PlayStation days when I was a kid back then. Love this game, but never played myself. I'd always watch my younger sister play it, but never finished it. I would've done everything I could to win the gold in all of my races and unlock the Piranha and 2 circuit tracks, like the player did here (without using cheats, ofc). Makes me want to play racing games too, lol 😄😄😄

I would actually argue that 3SE was the better game. And ofc it also has Manor Top. But 2097 certainly had a bit more of a raw "air" to it that wasn't to be beat. And it has, still to this day, the most beautiful and best-feeling of all the ships through the whole series bar none; the F5000 Qirex.
I remember this as the 1st game i ever played my folks rented a ps1 for me. And i literally played it the whole weekend. One of my all time faves inteo sequences to any videogame and one of the best if not the best soundtracks. ❤

one of the games that made me get up one hour earlier before school so i could run a few rounds in this game during winter 96. still rememer they day. usual time to get up was 7:00, i got up a 6, before my parents, leading them to ask why, that happend since i was up so early

It is amazing how well WipeOut, Destruction Derby, Rollcage and Vigilante 8 gameplay holds up even by today's standards.
Sick gameplay man! Respect! One of the best games at the time. I don't know how many hours we spent on this (also in multiplayer), but it was awesome, and the soundtrack too!

Damn right. WipEout started "becoming vegan" (as I like to call it) with 3, then had a brief moody but goofy phase with Fusion and got back to being vegan. I'm not saying that it's bad. Hell, I love the futuristic optimist tone the series got, but there's just something incredibly compelling about 2097. The soundtrack helped the most imo. I like how dangerous it feels and sounds. 90s kids must've been shocked when they vaporized their first opponent.

If you can play a game from the 90s as a skill-based thing, you have a gem on your hands. Wipeout is insanely underrated. I think Doom and Wipeout are just weirdly special 90s games where the controls were just perfect and there was a good level of skill and entertainment involved. Does wipeout have a modding community? God I would love to make a track.
What a game, just perfect for the time... really captured the attention of just about every teenager/20something in the late 90s. Sony knew Wipeout was a bit of a secret weapon and they really couldn't fail, this made the Playstation the console to own.
The disc of the Wipeout games plays like an album when out in a CD player. Track one’s the game, but from track 2 on the whole soundtrack’s on there.
Lots of ps1 games did that, Tomb Raider, gta etc

I like this vision of the future where we have the technology to make hover ships that travel thousands of kph, but we haven't progressed past the late 80s with computerized voices.

This was the original Wipeout, high speed spaceships. Now they are all so fucking slow.
For anyone looking for Wipeout on PC... there's a hidden gem on Steam called BallisticNG. Very reasonably priced at €6.59 (around the same in US dollars).

Did this game not have a tournament mode like the first one? I recently got my hands on a copy of Wipeout XL, which I understand is the US version of this? It only has the arcade mode.
I may be completely wrong, since I've not played this since it first came out.

WipEout 2097 is a GREAT GAME. But shame that it isnt included in PlayStation Classic mini console.
This game introduced this Canadian country boy to The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and Underworld. This announcer sounds so cool. “Contender eliminated!” Is music to my ears lol. I always thought this would’ve made a awesome movie with great racing and action scenes.
