    Hi from New Zealand.
I rescued some of these from an abandoned garden a couple of years ago; pleased to see I divided them correctly.

    Camera not on the action

Thanks for the feedback Deirdre. Yes I remember filming this one, I had massive issues with the filming and had to zoom in off centre during editing. I wasn’t going to post it, but decided to post and then film a new video Autumn (fall) 2021. As soon the weather turns I will be reshooting a video on dividing and replanting/reporting. Please comment with anything in particular you would like to see in a new video (other than the action in shot of course) . Warm regards Dan

The information was helpful thank you, however a lot of the actions being described were not in the frame of the video!

Thanks I’m happy the information was helpful.
Apologies not everything is in shot, it was a solo effort using an iPhone and I had to crop it as I got the camera stand in shot!
I’m looking to do a new video soon shot with a camera… so watch this space.

Watching you saw through so near your thumb made me wince particularly as the camera wasn’t in focus 😲

sorry for the distress! I am happy to report I still have my thumb ;) ... and yes played back it looks closer than it was. I am hoping to shoot a better video soon as conditions were pretty challenging filming this one! I hope it was still useful.

I’ve found Bergenia to be extremely hardy. I’ve propagated mine many times, just by breaking off sections with a decent stem and sticking them into the ground…. nothing else required! 😂
I’ve done this quite a few times, sticking long stalks into other areas of my garden; I’ve done exactly the same in my mum’s garden and also my son’s garden too.
They don’t need existing roots, as they’re so vigorous. They all rooted themselves 100% successfully👍🏼 I never use fertiliser on them either. Bergenias are so easy to grow as they look after themselves, apart from a bit of minor pruning for to tidy up aesthetics.

That’s fantastic, they root easily as you say. Success will often depend on soil type, climate, availability of water/watering, the original plant quality, and presence of pest and disease. Sounds like you have a great environment for growing them 👍

What time of year is best to do this?

    • @OriginalGardening
      @OriginalGardening  Рік тому +1

Hi billiesrus in the U.K. the best time is autumn (Fall), or after flowering in spring.

How often do bergenias flower and after I propragate, are they likely to flower the same year again? I seem to remember when we moved in last July these were still flowering. Am I imagining it?

I am speaking from a perspective from gardening in the southeast of England, so flowering will differ depending on your region or zone.
I normally get a proper flowering every year on newly divided plants in spring if I divide in autumn (fall). If I divide in spring I get flowering sometimes in the autumn/winter but definitely in the spring. I am finding some years they are in bud and flower almost every month!
If they are in plant beds and boarders, I don’t have a set rule but I like to divide every two to three years. In pots and containers I like to divide every year or two years. If you have a regular issue with Vine Weevil you may want to do every year in autumn to remove the larvae eating the roots.
