Switronix DV-GP4 GoPro Hero 4 Battery Eliminator Cable : REVIEW

  • The Switronix DV-GP4-USB is a power extension cable allowing you to power the GoPRO Hero 4 from the from any available USB. While a USB cable is suitable for many applications, the Switronix DV-GP4 adapter locks into the bus connector on the back of the camera, so you no longer need to rely on the USB connection on the side of the camera which can come out easily. Providing a reliable and secure power connection is essential when using the camera, since the GoPro's are often put in precarious, high impact situations. Because this solution is a cable rather than a battery, their is no heat generated by this solution, reducing the chance of over heating of the camera.
    The cable is offered in a 10' length and is a perfect solution for when you need to run the GoPro camera for extended run times.

    I have bought a similar thing from e-bay. I am also using an additional microphone that I am plugging on the side. But the problem is that I have some kind of electric interference sound on the recording. Do you have this sound with Switronix as well

    Hey, cool review. I use this cable for nearly one year and it is the only way that I know for the use of an external power source and a external mic. Unfortunately I wrack the cable lately. All the cables where pulled of the plug. Looks repairable but I have no idea which cable on which pin...

    Why in hell would they put the that module right next to the plug that goes into the back of the GoPro? they should have designed it with it at the USB end of the cord. less intrusive at that end.

    How do you mount the GoPro with the vanilla version of the product?? I am unaware of any way to usefully mount my GoPro 4 without the waterproof case. Hence I ordered one with the snap-on rear case addition. Should work well... just not sure how useful this could be without that. There's no tripod mount on the camera itself.

    most external battery backs stop charging and turn off when the device is fully charged, does this mean this cable wont work? or is there certain battery packs that don't shut off? or is it always draining power?

    I bought this product for my Hero 4 Silver. It was a complete disappointment. The cord that plugs into the back of the camera was way too short. It was very hard to plug in and close the door behind it. It looks like the cord in this video is longer, but not much. The third time I opened the case and pulled the plug out, it came apart exposing the area where the wires were soldered to the plug. It was cheaply made and very fragile. This product is fine in theory but needs to be be re engineered with more cord inside the water resistant case and sturdier manufacturing. Try the case from 3BR Powersports instead,

    ....LOVE your videos! I recently purchased the Hero4 Silver to record my sons' baseball games, and basketball games. Will you please recommend what I could use for battery power for games that last 2 hours, and iften 2 or 3 games a day, also how would you suggest I attach the camera to a baseball fence,or do you recommend another option for me? Thanks!

    does the system charge a battery that is in the camera simulataneously?

    • @iftibashir
      @iftibashir  9 років тому +1

      Steve Katsikas No - just like a GoPro Battery BacPac doesn't charge the internal battery either - just provides extra power. The internal battery is only charged via the side MiniUSB port.

    • @leebenworld
      @leebenworld 5 років тому +1

      Yes. This time in 2019, I have tested it with internal battery installed and external power bank connected via this battery eliminator (CORESWX DV-GP4) on go pro hero 4. The external power bank actyally is charging the internal battery. It is particularly useful when you use gopro smart remote and go pro on suction cup holder in a vehicle. But internal battery overheating issue may remain further test.

    Is the cable permanently mounted in the version with the case included or can you remove and use it without the back case? It appears that you might need to have both versions. If you used a frame or skeleton case then can you use this and have an external mic plugged in at the same time?

    Talking about batteries. Did you do the test video I suggested last year? Would still be interesting to see how long a GoPro can be run using a powerpack like the external battery shown in this video :).

    • @iftibashir
      @iftibashir  9 років тому

      ***** It would depend upon the capacity of the powerpack being used. Most would easily outlets several 64GB memory cards!

    At approx 3:02 you mention users are "able to remove the battery" when using this power supply. With my Hero4 Silver, it only accepts power from the Switronix DV-GP4-USB when there is no battery installed. When there is a battery installed, the camera sources power from the battery until it is dead and then shuts down (and never tries to get power from the DV-GP4-USB. I've contacted GoPro several times and Switronix, but none of the technicians I spoke with could figure out whether this is normal operation or a defect. Can you confirm whether my experience is works-as-designed or a technical issue? If it is works as designed, is anyone here aware of an external power supply that will work when there is a battery installed? Thanks in advance!

      +Paul Fisher I'm testing this right now. I have the Hero 4 Silver too and I'm testing with no battery, dead battery, and full charge battery; I'm going to take continuous time lapse photos. I'll let you know the results.

    • @Elte156
      @Elte156 8 років тому

      So I had a fully charged battery in my Hero 4 Silver. I plugged in the 30 pin connector to the back of the camera. The charging icon on camera nor red charging light appears. BUT it still keeps the camera alive. I was able to have WiFi and take 5 sec continuous shots for 8 days straight. The battery level was still full. It was a bit warm but nothing to be concerned about. You will run out of SD card space with this AC connector.

    I want to power my Go Pro units from an AC wall outlet. What AC to DC USB charger / power supply do you recommend using with this cable? Or can a regular 5 volt 1 amp USB phone charger work to power the Hero 4 for continuous recording, using a Standard USB A to mini USB device cable, connected to the mini USB side port on the Hero 4?

    you forget one really important thing which really is annoying about your video when a battery lead is plugged in the side you are unable to record so totally pointless it only charges when the record is disabled so for that big thumbs down

    • @iftibashir
      @iftibashir  4 роки тому +1

      At the time of this video you could actually record while charging - thats the whole point of having this unit.
      GoPro later released a new firmware which stopped recording while charging because so many people were using GoPro's on their drones. GoPro wanted to stop this as they were working on their own drone solution - the Karma. Hence that stopped other accessories, like this one, from working too.
      As the Karma turned out to be a major flop, recording while charging is now available again - although on newer GoPro revisions.
      If you want to allow accessories like this to work on your older GoPro you need to be running an older firmware - from before GoPro stopped the feature.
      You are free to 'thumbs down' the video, but to be fair this was down to GoPro at a later date - not an issue when this accessory was released, or if you run an older firmware (where the accessory will still work as normal)....
      Thank you for your comment regardless.
