I buy spares and tape them to the plenum for the inevitable Sunday sensor or igniter failure.
Smart man!
Dude, because of this video I was able to get my furnace running again in less than two minutes... thanks
Dirty filter is usually the first problem!! Not the last one... I always get a good look inside the blower, too. Those can be pretty nasty on older furnaces.
Watched your video like a week ago and how the three common mistakes of furnace can have, my went out like two days after me watching your video immediately went back to watch your video again and end up fixing my own furnace. Thank you so much for the help!!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful
Because of suggestions like this I bought all these parts and even AC capacitors a few years ago.
I have two furnaces and AC systems (matching units, one for the first floor and one for the second floor)
Same parts for each.
I suggest you all take Dave’s advice here and buy these parts now.
After checking the parts I bagged and boxed them up and put in the garage next to the furnace + wrote all over the box.
I’m set.
I suspect (electrolytic) capacitors may have a shelf-life like batteries. Probably not a problem if you are storing for less than about 10 years.

They're sealed & if not in heat or high humidity : last our lifetime !😎😜
I was in a bind 1 night with a bad igniter so I was able to manually light my furnace with a grill lighter. Essentially I had to do it manually when the temperature would really drop inside the house. It was better than not having no heat. Even though it was a nuisance to keep doing it it was good in the emergency.
Nice thinking. If your furnace is a multistage burner model I wonder if it could have used the lowest stage (smallest flame) so the furnace never cycles and then you needing to light it up again.
I just fixed my heating system with a $1 bill, thanks for your UA-cam channel!! Next is a backup power plug.
Have not changed my filter since my house was built - that is 17 years ago ! O my ... Heading to Home Depot for new filters as we speak !
Because of Covid, supply issues & getting jacked once by a HVAC guy I have since accumulated a box of spare parts. I now have every part listed on the parts list except the heat exchanger. ($$). Total cost for this insurance was roughly $500. Made that back already by fixing neighbor's furnance.
Saw a video from this guy about 4 years ago. Showed the tip about the flame sensor. I did what he said and my furnace is running as I write this! Thanks buddy, great info.
Thanks for your informational channel. It made me interested in providing backup power in the chance of a power outage. I went down the rabbit hole ,after considering a power cube and with that came recharging the cube and hooking it up but I wanted automatic so I looked at a TRI fuel portable generator because I wanted to use NG but none had a THD compatible with my 93 plus furnace. So I tried to get a 7.5 Generac but after ordering it the delivery date changed later and later. I found they had a 10k with 16 breaker auto switch and ended up going with that. After first thinking I could do this on the cheap with a battery/power cube it snowballed quite spectacularly . After Unit ,underground gas line ,electrical conduit, cement pad, All new Siemens breakers with 8 arc fault, 3/3 cable lets not forget permits and taxes, with me doing all the work it was still 6 times my original estimate of a nice power cube. No regrets it is wifi controlled so I know it is there and ready.
I figured I did save money by servicing my furnace Trane XL 93 plus with help of your video. So Thanks
You are a gem for all you share, thank ever so much! Be well.
Another excellent teaching video David! Well done.
Great tips. Thank you DIY HVAC Guy.
I replaced my propane dryer ignitor with this newer style. Its been working flawlessly.
Thanks for sharing your impressive knowledge and insights, you are appreciated.
You are most welcome!
Gracias for sharing this is very interesting and informative for us 😊
You always amaze me. Thank you!
Helpful video!
Thank you for your video. Great material.
Great advice, as always. Thanks.
My furnace is a TRANE , it's 32 yrs old, efficient, CLEAN BLOWER LIKE NEW.. HIGH FLOW ; HEATS FAST & COOLS FAST !!! 😇😎👍🏻⭐️DUCTWORK... I chg my 96% eff 3m filter every month !!! Worth it for all-reasons, including our health !! "NOTHING RUNS LIKE A TRANE" ; i'm sold !😜😎
Tnx for good explanation and for your clear English)!
Good job David!
Excellent video.
You're the man...
Thank you for this
LOVE YOUR CHANNEL KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND KEEP SENDING INFORMATION LIKE THIS. QUICK QUESTION IS IT BAD TO CLOSE OFF OTHER ROOMS THE RETURNS AND THE VENTS IF THERE NOT BEING USED.
Thank you!
Had to use 400 grit sandpaper to clean the rust off it.
I kinda like the snap snap snap whoosh ignition lol
At least you can hear it working.
Great video as always. Lots of people asking for the link to the hot surface igniter. It's the first link in the description. I'd like a link for replacement flame sensors please. Mine went bad a few years ago. I tried cleaning it with some fine sandpaper but nothing doing. I live in Canada and we have coins for $1 and $2 denominations instead of bills and all our bills are polymer (plastic) now so we can't even use those! I got lucky and found a good flame sensor in a furnace that was going for scrap and it's still going but I'd like to have a spare one handy for next time!
"I'm just gonna use a 20 to clean this."
Lol😂
Great video...
great video thans
I'm retired from the business now. When I got my new furnace 20 years ago I bought a spare control board and ignitor. Besides having one die on a holiday I worried about a part being obsolete and hard to get in the future.
A smart thing to do for almost any appliance, really.
I had a two stage York & they wanted $1000 for control board for a 17 year old furnace. I just bought new furnace.
Got a Lennox this thing has 4 pressure switch's. Anyone know why so many and the 2 on the right failed. Should I just replace the left side as preventative or just let it go. Great channel thanks for all the tips.
Thank you for sharing these techniques
Now when I check your site couldn’t find the igniter reference number
7:39
Thank you for making igniter accessible
Nice start to the beard. 2024 is Year of the Beard🤣🤣
after cleaning flame sensor is it good to go for awhile or recommend replacement asap?
I couldn't find the Coorstek 901TB Hot Surface Igniter you reference in the video. It's not even on the Coorstek website?
Question, If I buy a Cased A-Coil Evaporator do they come with the THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVE already installed ?
Thank you.
up to how many degrees celsius the external ambient temperature can the motor of the split and vrf air conditioner withstand, minimum and maximum temperature
Hi, what is the best brand for gas furnace? Thanks.
In Canada you have to use the new plastic $100 dollar bill to clean the sensor.
lol
Mine has been HSI failure. Then the relay on the main board failure.
I have a problem similar to the short cycling of the furnace but it doesn't happen all the time( randomly after so many complete cycles). I've cleaned the flame sensor and still the same issue. Should I just replace the flame sensor?
Can you do a video on testing ventilation air flow issues wrt filter grades, dusty ductwork, closed vents, return air, things to help increase airflow if necessary maybe compared to cfm and BTU (always oversized!!!).
Is there a way to relate BTU (or metric) to Rja of a house? I recently showed during a furnace outage that I only need 3000W continuous to keep 10 C above outside air temp 24/7. So do I really only need 12K BTU for my house in typical conditions? They installed a total of 7 tons (12k×7) of heating and cooling here. It cycles a lot!
I have a solution to reduce AC bill, 90% of heat comes via brown AL roof on master BR,south facing. Solar with an air gap!
Mine outside gas pack(Trane package unit) died on me yesterday. And yep right at the beginning of a severe cold snap. My son, who's in the business, talked me through a few things. Inducer motor kicks on followed shortly by burners(2) lighting off. They burn for around 10 seconds then shut off followed by the same sequence over and over. Blower is working. I pulled the flame sensor and cleaned it using emory cloth but didn't fix the issue. Now I'm wondering if I either didn't clean it well enough or it has failed?
Since it's a package unit sitting outside on sub 10 degree weather and now snow on the ground.....UGGGGGGG!
My flame sensor was so far back and hard to reach. I swore a lot that day 😂
Yep. I have a dual flame/sensor on my older furnace. Was a bitch to clean but it worked. Pricey too to replace.
Is it possible my Carrier furnace doesn’t have a filter? I’m not able to locate it. It appears to be CTX model?
What ignitor are you using?
How often does that flame sensor need to be cleaned? My system is only two years old.
That ignitor you suggest off Amazon is it American made? I don't want a cheap low quality replacement!
I changed my filters every month.
So does the ignitor ever need replacing? What replacement part do you recommend for those? I want to buy extra parts for just in case!
Just Google search your furnace model for the information. I did. 😊
My igniter goes bad, every year, early spring! Propane. Igniter and flame sensor combined. Honeywell.
What's the deal?
Has done it for 4 years. I replace and repeat, yearly.
I didn't see the igniter kit in your Amazon store... Can you share that please?
I agree. Need that link.
Hi Dave.
Great video. I have an unrelated question that has nothing to to do with emergency power for a furnace. Over the Christmas break my wife wanted me to replace our existing Thermostat with a Nest. My furnace is similar to the one in this video. I looked at the thermostats and saw they were single stage. My furnace is 96% and two stage. I did find one Nest that could accommodate two stages by attaching the second stage to the OB contact and I guess program it do that function. That seemed a little above my knowledge and I was afraid I might screw up the furnace which is working great. I took to the internet for information and support and got the idea that most furnace technicians do not recommend using the nest and that they don't work well and if I got it working it could cause damage to something on my furnace down the line. I got confused and did nothing.
The only reason I was considering a new thermostat is the fact we could use an app on our phone and the fact the display is hard to read on the one we have now. We have an Emmerson Big Blue and the display is illuminated but very dim and difficult to see. It has been like this from the start. If the display was brighter I wouldn't even change it. They seems no way to make it brighter. As is stated I love the furnace and the thermostat works great.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Your the only friend I know in the business.
PS I'm all set up for a power failure, foam cleaned my air conditioner and bought that multi socket driver because of you. The drive works great and takes up way less space in my pouch. Thank You
Most 2 stage furnaces have dip switch settings, that allow you to run predetermined 2 stage or true 2 stage operation! If you choose to run true 2 stage operation, yes you will need a 2 stage t-stat,of not check your owners manual, basically it runs at low fire for a pre determined amount of time then of not satisfied it switches to high fire!
Thanks Peter. Have you used the Nest?
@@binnsbrian I try to steer clear of them! They are more smoke and mirrors than anything else! If your system is 96% efficient, thats all you get! I think NEST ,ECOBEE,ETC are more to the HVAC industry as K&N cold air intakes are to the automotive indistry! ( no they wont give you 15 extra HP! I feel the same with tankless water heaters, only good if you need endless hot water. As far as btus,ot still requires the same amount to heat all that water. Yeah ,you may save a little cash ,but it is washed away with annual maint! Im an HVAC realist, been doing residential and industrial service for 30 years, and I have seen more stupid stuff than really good stuff.
Thanks. Peter I value your opinion.@@petersmart1999
Thanks Peter. I value your opinion. As I stated in my original post I am happy with the furnace and its operation. I just find the display on the Emmerson Big Blue thermostat dull and hard to read.
Do all gas furnaces have flame sensors? For example, my old gas furnace doesn't have a hot surface ignitor. It has a pilot.
It’s becoming more and more rare to see one with a pilot but they are out there.
Sorry I misunderstood. Not all have a hot surface ignitor but all have flame sensors, yes
Can you replace a glow igniter with a more reliable spark igniter?
Unfortunately those require a certain board and it’s really not worth doing. The one I showed is way more reliable than the old ones with the spacing in between. I’d just keep a universal by your furnace for when it decides to quit 👌🏼
Is there such a thing as preventive maintenance on the items in this video? Obviously the filter is easy enough. Would it be a good idea to replace the sensor and igniter every so often or just let it ride until it goes out? Thanks.
I have a 80% nat gas Bryant single stage furnace. No flame sensor or ignitor issues ever. I have replaced a blower motor capacitor. If the flame sensor isn't working it is most likely dirty. Clean it with a USD bill and most likely it will work again.
Preventative maintenance is always a good idea if it's in the budget and you are confident with the repair. Set whatever length of time for the service life (say 10 years). When you replace it, clean the old one and keep it as an emergency backup as it was working when removed.
@@joshsansone5113 thanks for your input. I was thinking about just that. My furnace is 17 yo and haven't had much problems, seriously considering pm.
This channel does have a preventive maintenance video. Entitled "HVAC Companies HATE That You Can Do This Yourself." Published 29 Oct 2023
Unfortunately I was not able to find it in any of the playlists; and the title is more click-bait than descriptive.
It is like 17 easy steps!
Hi we are in need of replacing a 28 year old furnace for a 1996 Bi Level total sq ft 2500 we are seniors on a so called fixed income so payments would be prefered a furnace guy by us recommended a Weatherking 70,000 BTU single stage furnace what we need to know is are they reliable and a good brand ? what brand would you recommend and size we live in Vulcan Alberta Canada we also have already a 3-4 year old Air conditioner this is an investment for us so we want best bang for the buck so to speak but very reliable thank you so much and we look forward to your response cheers
I just bought a newly built house. My thermostat is driving me crazy. I turn the heat off to save money but there are only two fan setting: On and auto, so the fan continues to run with cold air and does not shut off because there is no option to do this. Would a different model of thermostat fix this?
Auto
@@Crete__Life Does not change it. The fan operates almost constantly with heat and cool off.
how about an oil furnace ?
Have you ever seen error 33 on a Bryant furnace? My furnace heats the house, but also reports the error.
How old is it,I have seen certain models with bad secondary heat exchangers! Been awhile,I dont see alot of them around here much anymore!
@@petersmart1999 Bryant 915SA48080S17. Installed in 2015
You have a link for the HSI?
Look for GloFly
Dam I have to change my filter every 3 weeks What’s up with that.
i hear so many commercials on the radio from hvac companies it is insane. Hard to find somebody you can trust.
All I get is boner pill ads
Yeah, make sure your furnace doesn't require a 24 volt hot surface ignitor! And do not touch the element with your fingers!!!!!
The older 80 percent Amanda's had the 80v & 120v glow plugs.
#1 Don’t buy those cheaper than dirt brands.. I’ve so many parts on these brands… I’m tired of cheap junk. Icp products are Very cheap.
Fluke375? You're spoiled!
The solution for any and every furnace issue is the same, rip it out and replace it with a heat pump, ideally a geothermal heatpump.
What idiot would use a furnace when they could have a heat pump? Obviously renters are excluded but at that point the repair isn't even on you.
Cost of the equiptment is cheaper, and the cost to operate is cheaper, that's why we will never get a heat pump, gas all the way
Initial unit cost is usually lower. Honestly an 80% efficient furnace will most likely experience less issues overall. KISS method keep it simple stupid. Repairs will likely be cheaper.
Also if running a heat pump with electric backup heat you are solely dependent on the electrical grid.
With a gas furnace in the event of an electrical outage it can be set up to run off a car inverter or smaller generator and maintain your heat during an emergency with minimal investment and a little pre-planning.
This would factor in depending on geographic location and frequency/duration of electrical outages.
