If this is allowed then soon the sport will be Servemintion game. I want more rallies. Remember its not a ball. It has feathers so there is a limitation on returning this serve. In this style of serve the feathers are prone to get hit first and when the feathers are damaged the flight will be bad and then when the flight is bad it will shorten the rallies because of errors. Tell me how it will be interesting.
You know what is better to do next?
1. Allow players to use their challenges to challenge the umpire call. Players complaining is more time consuming than reviewing the slowmo specialy on the net. whats the point of slow the cameras around the court.
2. Widen the sides of rubber court on every tournament. It will just cause injuries when the players step on the carpet. Example is Yuta Watanabe, he got injured this way and affected his next match and lost.
But if the feathers are hit first it's a foul serve, so no benefit to the server.
I think making the comparison with table tennis is a good one. IMO it shouldn't be allowed to manipulate the ball in any way when you are serving. It would be like Rexy said, you wouldn't need to train for other aspects and only on spin-serve then if it's allowed. It's not about creativity it's about manipulation of the ball, creativity is how you put the shuttle across not how you spin the shuttle to manipulate it when the rally hasn't even begun
absolutely correct, totally agree with you. ban the moving/shaking serve too. it's disgusting, no respect.

Banning of this serve was 100%right. If it was not banned then it would have made rallies negligible and opposition would not even have got a point
And yet we haven't seen anyone win any high level tournaments using that serve.

At no point of the rally are you allowed to tamper with the shuttle with your hands, why should you be allowed to spin it to be begin with?

spectators don't want to just see a full game set with a 2 second rally in it, that's the same as watching a football match where only penalty kicks are taken throughout the game 😅

I was even surprised it was allowed in the first place, I thought the shuttle had to be held by the feathers and dropped, meaning not giving it any direction other than its free fall...

@@sevenstarofheaven u take almost the same time to learn to smash as it is to learn how to defend it, these guys takes 3 week to learn spin serve and use it competitively and by all no means it takes 3 weeks to learn how to counter it aside for letting go down and lob it to the back giving your enemy a chance to attack especially at double. Each shuttle while made the same will always be different to a small error, that small error is enough this make that spin serve different each time, and each time the shuttle is deform, it will spin differrently, so yeah, countering it is almost impossible.
I agree pre- spin or Spin use your fingers at first and then slice, yes should be ban.
Spin serve like lee yong dae, aaron chia, sukamuljo and other it's okay.

A temporary ban is a good decision. This gives everybody involved enough time to try out, to think about consequences, and to make up their mind about the topic. The comparison with table tennis is a really good one, and my personal bias is towards a lasting ban of pre-spinning the shuttle prior to hitting it with the racket when serving.
I think daniel edgar marvino/ raymond indra able to somewhat return in after disastrous 1st game against Espersen/Rindshoj. Daniel manage to do it earlier than Raymond, I did not hear completely what the coach said but maybe meant hitting it earlier. Its still not perfect but at least it will pass the net.
Just to be sure, the "regular spin serve" aka the kevin/LYD spin serve is still legal right?

I think whatever magic is possible with the racket should be allowed. but this is pre-spin made with fingers so that this should be banned
The Sidek serve spins the shuttle feathers instead of the shuttle head. It was banned in 1984.
Right now the team who won a point is in at a slight disadvantage because they have to serve. This leads to close exciting games.
If serving is an advantage we will see less comebacks and more onesided games. How can anybody want that?

While I agree with the banning of the spin serve, I would dispute the idea that serving is a disadvantage. If you have a good serve, it's such a weapon because your opponent can't hit down. Obvs there is a lot of pressure but it's certainly not a disadvantage if your serve is good.

I think its the best decision, imagine going 15 all without any rallies. Services in spirit is a way to start the rally not the decider. Remember the 115cm max height thing right? I think its in the same spirit

Bruh the Sidek Serve is very bad for the sport. 1st of all it'll break one of the feathers and shot quality would decrease

I dont see what the problem is as the shuttle will eventually straighten by the time its trajectory is close to the ground and it can be lifted and cleared by the receiver? Just another variety to the game.
Yes it should be permanently banned. Manipulation of the ball or shuttle should be stopped.
The similarities with table tennis is a good one.

Why would you spend such a long time learning this serve and then use it in the polish open of all tournaments. Could have at least waited for the Sudirman cup and shared it with the Danish team.
Personally I prefer rules to be more reactive rather than proactive, as it makes for better stories. Let the serve be for a while to feel it out, if it actually turns out to make a massive difference it can be banned at that point, but the situation that leads up to it can then be used to boost badminton's exposure. Generally when something happens in a sport that leads to a major title being won by surprise and then a rule change happens, that sport gets a lot of coverage, and people talk about it more.
Great decision, unless I win the toss and choose to serve at my next tournament. Then this is unbelievable! A discrimination against creativity!
Good idea to ban it leading up to Paris. Many good points for both sides mentioned in this vid, and at the end of the day, despite our best guesses, the important point is that we really don't know whether it's good for the game until the game lets the serve have its day for a time, get some stats and results, allow time for players to not only perfect the serve but also the counter/return and see if a new kind of tension is created, where it's skill serving versus skill returning. And if it ends up becoming unfairly advantageous for the server then it can be observed and it will be banned for good evidence this time.
It must be banned. Allowing this is the same as allowing to serve from 2 meters height: the serve becomes way more difficult to return. The game will consist of 2-3 shot rallies.

Maybe we should allow spin serve like how they allow 2 lines call challenge? It’s like a special weapon where you only use it on crucial moments? Imagine a computer game you can only use special weapon for very limited times. 😁

I think its just a guess of the trajectory of the shuttle, which means the server will be returned poorly where the serving side can attack heavily

No. Thumbling is shuttle spinning by the racket.
Spin serve is shuttle spinning by the fingers.
The other serves that you describe are much much harder to do and they don't deliver the same results. Those serves can be returned and you don't get anywhere near as much action on the shuttle nearly as consistently. This serve, the top players can learn in a week to the point where it is pretty unreturnable.
Agree with Steen, a blanket nan could be stifling the development of the sport. If players find a good way to return it then it's adding additional skills.
If it proves genuinely unreturnable then sure ban it.

Cant win the rally but able to win the opening of the rally and maintain momentum of the game... i can see why with such agreement to such serve 😏
My only complaint I have about this ban is that (as of now) it is temporary. I personally feel it should be a permanent ban.

Good players can already do so much weird things to the bird without this serve already, so why let it be allowed when it becomes only about winning points. Doing the Kevin serve is plenty good already so why not really master that. Kevin serve is 10 times harder than this easy to learn one, that’s why officials are worried and they should be. Kids here are doing it so it’s not hard to learn.

Agree with the ban but it must be temporary. How could be used positively is if score are level at the 15-15 point in a game onwards the spin serve can only be used twice. if after 25-all same rule applies.. add excitement like the challenges.. the other thing that can be used is the forfeit system. If the spin serve is used the initiating team must win the rally or they lose 2 points

People talking about not wanting short rallies all the time, but almost half the points in pro games already end in less than 4 shots. Flick serve sometimes is an ace, sometimes receiver makes error on normal serve, and people like to see unreturnable smash or drop shots with the highlight videos mostly being those shots. How can still claim they want to see more rallies? If wanting more rallies, clearly need to do more than just ban spin serve.
It's not quite the same though is it. Normally, rallies end quickly if someone makes a mistake. Normally if the serve or the return isn't good enough. Smash winners tend not to occur early in points unless someone makes an unforced error by lifting short. The point with the spin serve is that there is no good way of returning it. Currently, rallies end quickly if unforced errors are made but who wants a serve where you can essentially consistently start each rally with a huge advantage since your opponent will more often than not make Forced errors on the return.
100% deserved to be ban. They should ban the way you hold the shuttle tbh because that is the main reason for the early spin of the shuttle before getting hit.
It is common sense to ban it. It would destroy the game. Just like how hiding your serve in table tennis was made illegal because it ruined the game.

Spinning serve definitely is a dirty play! In my opinion, player shouldn’t grab the shuttle head while perform serve especially in doubles.

People that disagree often on the side that dont know how to do it. Like a pitcher in baseball or server in volleyball, they often times got specialist in serve, which become dangerous delivery if the receiver dont know how to returns it. But it can be done with a practice. So I don't see what the problem here. It adds variety and new subject which point you have to train. Of course you can't win the match by just train the serve, that's impossible, especially if opponent know the theory and practice the return sometime.
It also has risk. The failed spin serve almost guarantee a point for the opposition.

ban the shaking serve too！！！quite players are moving their hand before the serving, this is not right, they want to distract opponent focus of returning serve. you should not make deception move before the game starts itself. you should keep your body steady, including the hand and arm. play it with respect to the sport itself and the ones on the court.

There's no gimmick with the punch serve. Also, it's not physically hard to return, some players just don't expect it coming
its a different case for the punch serve because if the opponents expects it its gonna be a disadvantage for the server, because its so high above the net when it crosses the net

I can do this serve easily,, and it cannot be returned "easily",, also there is an element of danger in it,,,, if the shuttle spins flat out while tumbling and the receiver get pissed off and just launches at it with no control it may take out an eyeball of the server,,, anyway my doubles games last 8 minutes to 21,,,, with this serve 5 minutes .. and there is no game,,, just 1 guy serving all the way to 21......... the sport will lose as fans get pissed off,,, dont forget your all thinking doubles,,, but it can be done in mixed and singles too!....... so the answer is to ban it outright
The server shouldn't be banned. The serves makes the game more interesting, increases popularity of the game. Olympic qualifiers is big hogwash to ban the serve.
