This video will show you how to pour a concrete slab for a Tiny House. This video is for Beginners and Diy's who want to know how to pour a concrete slab. The slab is a basic six inch thick concrete slab with the edges thickened another 6 inches for a total of 12 inches thick.
We start with a 3000 3/4 psi concrete mix and tell the concrete mixer driver we want a 6 inch slump. Slump is how dry or loose the concrete is mixed. A 6 slump is a pretty easy, workable slump to screed and bull float.
We start pouring the concrete slab on one end and pour out about 3/4 of the slab with one guy raking the concrete as level as he can with the top of the forms. Another guy is mag floating the edges and I"m holding the Truck chute. We screed the concrete with 2 guys "kick screeding" and one guy raking or puddling the concrete behind us. After screeding, I bull float the concrete smooth and we install the anchor bolts.
To learn how we install concrete slabs like this from start to finish, you can learn from my CONCRETE SLAB course below. It will teach you each step in an easy to follow video format.

Tiny houses are getting very popular! I’m a concrete delivery driver. You guys did a great job. Good video
Awesome! Thank you!
So many young people have no skills, bless you for teaching skills like this.
I feed my family working concrete, supposed to be off but here I am watching a videos.
Love you video and keep it coming
Awesome thank you.
Hell yeah this is what a man needs to see
Thanks so much for your channel Mike. I’m a long time DIY guy. I’m studying to pour a 30x35 monolithic slab for a garage I want to put up. Your videos are priceless. I plan to take your course to help. And because I love learning how to do my own things. Again thanks for your time and energy and willingness to share your knowledge. Not many are so willing. Blessing to you.
Thank you!
My mrs and are going to build our own tiny house and want to pour our own slab. Your videos will be a great help 👍
First time slab diy guy here. Not looking to start a business just wanna be able to take care of my small projects. Thank you to you and other true professionals for sharing your skills. Getting ready to do a 14x14 pad on my own. 1 guy thats a complete rookie. I baught the tools and am willing to jump in. Wish me luck. The concrete truck driver is gonna get a BIG tip if he is patient with my rookie ass!
How'd it go?
@@Bird-wz7nx It turned out good. not perfect but it sheds water and looks good.
I have a shed that some people say looks like a tiny house. Its about 320 square feet and I did rafters to inside has some good headspace. Love your vids btw!!
Mike, so many friends tell me do not pour slab. I'm glad ur showing this video. We are pouring 12 x 28. Yes a 24 ft. Footer too.
Mike: Great videos! I am a Masonry Instructor in Pennsylvania and worked as a concrete finisher for almost 20 years. Yes, I did enjoy the trade from setting the formwork to putting the final broom or trowel finish. You do as good a job explaining the in's and out's of flatwork as I've seen on the internet. I show your videos in my classroom sometimes. Thanks for putting these together!
Jesse you still teach ? I want to learn
I'm building my own tiny house.. I will have a concrete crew do what is seen here in video however, I will lay my own concrete block basement.. (some experience some years ago.. but, I'll learn again.. a lot of work when I'm only a one man team.. some things later like plumbing & electrical I have some help there.. mine is 16×20 cabin with a cellar/basement & it will be intense for a 50yr old guy but, I know I can do it
Mike! This is the second video of yours that I've watched and this time, I subscribed. I'm impressed. Not only by your knowledge, but also how willing you are to share it (and how clear & easy to understand you make it). I'm not interested in starting a concrete business, but I am learning to make aircrete domes and they need a solid slab to sit on. I've only seen them made by pouring concrete on dirt - no vapor barrier, no insulating foam- so seeing the styrofoam in this foundation made me very happy. I'm also very happy to hear that you have videos about staining concrete. Thank you!
P.S. Yes, I have definitely heard (a lot) about tiny houses.
Awesome, thanks 😊
I love doing things on my own. I like to learn it and research it to make sure I'm doing projects properly. Your channel is amazing. I appreciate it.
Awesome, thank you!
I usually take a EastWing and tap the bulkhead to reduce honeycombing. I also use form oil to make stripping a little easier. I noticed the forms looked a little dry. This would have been a nice size slab for a vibra-screed. That way Luke coulda dropped the mag darby and pick up a come along to rake on one side. Not only is flatness insured if used correctly. It also vibrates the large aggregate down and brings the finest and paste to the top to make sealing it with a bullfloat a snap. I been doing this for over 35 years. I was ACI certified, went through a three year apprenticeship, was a foreman over several jobs as well as business agent for fifteen years in the OPCMIA. I've been on pours from 200 sqft to 20,000 sqft, from 4" to 2' in thickest. I've worked with laser screeds mounted on a rubber tired frame, cable hand cranked vibrating screeds, vibra-screed and of course 16' mag straight edges. My biggest pour was probably about 12 years ago for Hi-Way Paving on Corridor H in the Eastern Panhandle of WV. We poured 200 ten yard tandem dump trucks full of 1.5" slump 45000psi mud. 2000yds and 3/4 of a mile of two lane highway in about 14 hours. I retired about 2 years ago with 33 years service. I still do side jobs and just prepped formed poured and stamped a little slab at Deep Creek Lake in MD couple months ago. Not only do we have some women in my old local but up in the Northern Panhandle around Wheeling we have a female business agent. Flatwork was always the favorite of most finishers compared to Heavy/Highway. However a bridge deck working behind a Bid-Well was one of my favorite. There's very few big buildings, bridges, roads or sidewalks two hours from my house in any direction that I or one of our guys I sent had a hand in helping finish it. It's good feeling to know a lot of my work will be here long after I'm gone! Over the years I've found working with concrete is alot like dealing with a woman. The more you play with it the wetter it gets. You'll wait on it but it won't wait on you. Just when you think you have it, it'll get away from you! Hurry up guys the truck's coming!
Wow this was a great very informative video. Thank you for your thorough explanation of the process, tips and tools you used. My husband and I live in a Crossroads Hampton destination travel trailer on his parent’s 2 acre property to save money on living cost and raise our chickens and ducks on. We need to add a 25’ wide x 51’ long concrete slab with a slight angled ramp on one end to drive the trailer on it. This concrete slab will eventually serve as a foundation for a double wide trailer that we will buy later on and live in that and sell our trailer. The concrete slab is estimated at 34 yards of concrete to be 6” thick with 6 bags of concrete and using rebar for strength and stability. We were given a quote by my dad’s friend who is also a long term cement contractor and would love to allow him and his team to work on our new concrete slab but it’s being quote a very high price as it should be we just can’t afford that at this time and we need to get this concrete pad done since our trailer has been sitting on hard dirt for over a year since we got married. My dad, my husband, my father in law and I will work on this project on our own to save a lot of money that we can use towards saving for the double wide home. We’ll also attempt to make a stamped stained concrete patio similar to what my dad has which is a beautiful adobe color, very earth tone color and goes with any landscaping. Any tips you can pass my way would be very helpful. We will also try to rent the tools as well and hire a cement company to deliver the ready cement like you did. The slab you did here came out beautifully. I’ll be sharing this video and the other video on the start to finish for a concrete slab with my husband and our dads so everyone knows how the project should go. If I have any questions I’ll reach out to you as a a reply to this comment so you know it’s me, Amber. Thanks Mike.
As many as you can afford the time and effort appreciated. Pouring a network of slabs to replace the thin and crumbled old concrete across the farmyard. I stick with your videos as the best I've seen because you're not only very good but your explanation of detail is perfect for an amateur like me. Thanks.
Thanks Lloyd!
I got accepted into a cement masons union. Although I've had some experience and training taking notes off these videos is getting me up to speed on propper tool names, timing, and procedures. Thanks!
I know some of these are old, but I love your videos, man. I’m a union cement mason out of Boston, and do side work when things are slow. Appreciate all you do ✊🏽⚒️
I'm building a 24x24 tiny home with a loft, and this has been very informative. Trying to decide on a slab or pier.
Im building the same exact size tiny house. Good video helped me figure out a few things i wasnt sure above
I have done concrete work for 26 years. All the way up until 2018 I had a heart attach. Due to stress and letting myself go. I have got myself back together enough to try to get back to it this season in ohio. I like watching you work because your ways are similar to mine. keep up the good work and I will try to get back in there. C.R.Hunter
Glad to hear you're doing better Cecil. Hope things work out for you.
This looks great. We're thinking of learning how to pour slabs for different projects on our property. Looks like it may be the thing to sub out. Thank you
I had enough of doom and gloom being broadcast and posted and it’s raining so I went looking for something I might learn from. I won’t say I have done concrete work I did drive a mixer truck for a summer and know those guys work very hard. If I was younger I would be willing to learn and do some myself because I love to see things built. You also remind of one of my firefighters, he worked like you full out till it was done right. I will be watching just for the enjoyment of the work so keep up all the good work !
I'm planning to build my own small home for my retirement place. The slab is something that I'm not sure if I can do it myself. This video helps. Thanks!
very satisfying,,I need to do this for a slab INSIDE a frame stucco shack,,aprox 16x32
Going to try an do my shad it's 30x20
Your video will help me, thanks. Mike
Mike, great video!
I'm checking out your courses now.
I have a guy for every department I want to learn about. You are my guy for concrete. Appreciate the videos.
Who’s your electrical guy?
I like pouring concrete. I’ve helped out on some bigger jobs but I’ve only planned and organized smaller ones on my own. I recently did a footing for a stone column that will be used as an entrance gate for a property. I had a harbor freight electric mixer and it took 93 80lb. Bags to complete. Needless to say that was way too many bags to be running through a little mixer. Both the mixer and I survived but we took some years off our life span. I’m planning on pouring a slab for a mortared stone patio at my house this spring. Its fairly big approximately 15’ x 30’. I’m definitely going to call a truck for that.
I really like working with concrete and block walls. Just need to learn more
Hey Mike great video. I'm preparing to do excavation for 20 × 20 garage. As I'm typing you just said you don't do the excavation. Bummer! I will be doing the monolithic slab pour and footings tho
I love doing things by myself. I enjoy watching your videos. I learned a lot. Thank you for sharing. I have also seen some video on tiny houses, they looked very economical!
New subscriber here from the Philippines am doing stamp concreting, concrete polishing , and other flooring works in part time only, but i am looking forward to do in full time i find your videos so educational .. looking forward to your more videos , oh thank you for the learnings .. Keep Safe!
Man , you guys make it look so easy! I did a few slabs and sidewalks and I was so tired . My back !!
Been watching lots of your vids. Excellent source of info and tips. Only one thing I disagree with is the wet setting of rebar. I was talked into it by a contractor on a slab I helped out on for my employer as it was faster and less labor intensive then tying a "ladder" of rebar around the perimeter. 2 years later massive cracking and heaving on ever rebar line. Granted a non heated building and much different ground. Not being critical, you do excellent work, I just know I will be taking the time to tie all rebar in the future.
Thanks for all the useful knowledge you share with your videos.
Hi From Australia! It’s always great to watch guys that know what there doing
I really wanna learn how to do concrete work..I love your videos bro
Yes Mike.. I.like to learn how to do stuff for myself...seems like when I pay the local pros I'm never satisfied..great videos by the way
Hey Mike, great videos. I've been working on pools all my life. Always nice to see other guys and their tricks.
I plan on setting a foundation for a storage container home. Learning as much as i can before hand. I like your video compared to a few others i've seen
Awesome... I like watching even the "for beginner's " videos, because there's still much to learn from pros like Mike.. even on beginner projects.
That's great, thanks.
Hi Mike, I live in the Caribbean and these videos have been very informative. I've never poured a slab before but I plan to make an addition to my house and these videos have really helped me to understand all that goes into this kind of work and kind of even inspired me to pour the slab for that addition when the time comes. Thanks a lot, this is very good content. Keep these videos coming.
Hi Mike, I am planning on pouring a 40x28 slab between 2 40’ conexes on a compacted gravel pad in Alaska. for a garage that I will build myself. I’ve never poured a slab that big before. Looking for advice from start to finish . I might hire the pros but would love to do it myself. Thanks, I’m Mike too
Home Depot had a two-story tiny house 16x24. Now they're like 12 by 20. Kind of sad. But I have plans hopefully within the year to put a ADU on my property. Also was looking to pour 16 by 24 pad on each side of the garage. And put queen trusses on top.
Your videos are great. I am a bricklayer but sometimes I do small concrete jobs but I would certainly like to do more of it.
I have done footing's, foundations, walkways and slabs. It has been years since I have done the work and we are getting closer to pouring our insulated radiant heated slab. 30' x 60', I have been thinking about tackling it on my own, I have been quoted 16k from a contractor @ 4", but if I do it on my own I could pour the 6" slab for what I want in the mix for in my area $170 per yard 35 yards total = around $6500 with tax. That would give me the money for the R-20 insulation under the slab and also pay for the radiant heating tubing. I have thought abought making a wide screed to use, or passably hire a couple of able bodies who would like the extra work for s few hours. I like the channel, you have a lot of information for people to use if they choose to do so.
Your videos are excellent Mike. I am a long time diy guy and i had no problem doing a nice 6 inch thick 9'x9' slab for my hot tub after following your lead. Next up I'm gonna try a 12x24 for my outdoor kitchen. I'm thinking i need to rent a power trowel for that. A little scary but trying new stuff is fun
Another great video Mike. 14' screed is as big as I go to. Any more will pull your guts out. It would be nice for me to just pour and do some forming but I get stuck with a lot of grade work. I've done the math and I make a lot more pouring concrete.
There's more of a profit in the concrete for you? That's a good thing.
Yes. I do much better if grade work is already done. I've considered going up on my excavation price. I rent my equipment as I need it now. Would make more if I owned a skid steer and mini excavator. I had a guy make me an offer a couple weeks ago. He does grade work, all form work, goes back and gets forms for $40 a yard. I'm thinking about considering. All I would do is pour.
There's good money in just pouring and finishing. Sometimes you can get in 2 pours a day. Maximize your time and profits.
Hey Mike, Great video, Greetings from the Great White North. Oshawa, Ontario Canada. Excavation, Foundation, Concrete Slab Contractor and Pastor of a Pentecostal Church.
I take teams of guys worldwide to build schools, orphanages, churches etc. You make this stuff look so easy and I've been watching for the last year or so. You have helped me a lot.
What is the determining factor that makes you bring out the Vibra Screed? as opposed to the kick screed. The guys around here never use the two man screed. Always the one man with the handles.
Anyhow keep up the great work.
JC
I'm thinking of a tiny home because I'm just an older single dude and like the idea of a small, manageable home for myself. So just checking out videos of the different aspects of doing this. I'm curious as to how much this slab costs, if you don't mind saying. Thanks!
Been watching a lot of your slab pour videos because I am preparing to pour a 23x24 garage/shop slab. Will be pouring in the cold weather in Georgia. You make it look easy, so hope my slab goes half that well. I have 2 semi experienced friends that will be helping, but want to watch as many vids as I can prior to the pour. Just enjoying your videos
Just found your channel, and this is the first video of yours that I’m watching. Home prices in my area are actually booming during the pandemic, and I’m hoping to sell and then build on some less expensive land outside of town. I’m trying to get as good a sense as possible of potential costs and challenges before I just dive in, and videos like yours are immensely helpful! They’re also fun and satisfying to watch. 😊
Great job guys....thanks for sharing...Mike do you ever have call for SCC in your area? Cheers
Mike, I enjoy the videos! I knew nothing about pouring concrete until I came across your videos. Thank you! 👍
I find your videos very informative. Thanks. Just a thought, I think 16 x 24 would be considered a small house. Most Tiny houses are travel trailer size. otter of fact I've seen most of them with wheels. Freaks the town out because they typically are taxed less. Thanks again for taking the time to teach.
I like all your videos. I’m an electrician by trade but I’m going to be building my own house and hiring out subs. I’m not going to be forming or placing the concrete but want to learn how it’s done correctly so I can spot problems before they happen.
That's good Buddy, always good to know what's going on.
Mike - Love your channel. Question on the foundation/slab. I'm in MA. I know IRC allows for buildings to be constructed on foundations without frost wall. But I thought it required insulation on the outside of the foundation as well. I know you have some under the slab. Is the insulation also required in ME on the outside to prevent the frost from getting in. Thanks.
The excavator does the outside when he backfills the slab.
thanks Mike for sharing. I'm thinking of building my own tiniy house. so I'm watching this.
Mike, thanks for sharing your expertise. I like to DIY and I'm looking to try my own large slab for a garage.
I general got knowledge pouring slab But about build Smaller ranch house down here in Texas desert. I want slab with anchor bolts and trying get better grasp on slab ideas
Love it. You guys are a coordinated team.
Thumbs up just for the appreciated "if" comments at 2:42 - hate being told what to do by others and when people realize and talk like other possibilities exist.
Inspector said im not allowed to wet set anchor bolts. Made me form them in. Makes it much harder to finish. But he got what he wanted.
I love doing it I am trying to learn how to do it.
Love these videos. Pouring a turn circle at our home in 2 days. First time pouring concrete.🤞🏼
Good luck!!
Is there any pictures of this house framed on top of this slab? Nice work by the way.
Good day Sir, good work done, I will like to learn, what should I do
Very helpful for what I am looking to do! How much for this job?
Tiny home is why I’m here!
Nice vid👍
I’m a painter by trade, but have exposure to other trades- carpentry, roofing, plumbing and I want to do as much as I can myself and learn more in the process!🙂
I sub’d- ty for your content ✌️👌
Thanks Mike for all your videos. They have inspired me to do a couple concrete jobs this spring around my house by myself.
That's awesome. Good luck!
You guys definitely make it look easy!
You are awesome Mike. Thanks for the videos. I too am a handyman diy guy worked for masons when I was young, now I’m learning the rest from you and your crew. Looking forward to the concrete course.
One of the best diy’s video Ive watched Thanks!
I love learning about this sort of stuff !!! Thanks for posting. Great resource
I love pouring slabs!! Need to get better finishing!
It takes time running the power trowel, troweling edges and hand finishing. Took me a whole summer to learn when I started.
I really like your videos. They are very instructive and a complete beginning to end. I like that you've shortened each video into one step of the process so that we beginners can take it slow. Can you tell more about what mix of concrete to use in areas with below freezing temps in winter?
I always use a 4000 psi fix for exterior concrete. It also has air-entrainment to help protect against freeze/thaws.
I have seen a lot of videos about tiny houses. Even HUD has some tiny house models. This is the first one I have seen that is having a slab poured for it, most of them are sitting on trailers.
These people want a permanent foundation for theirs.
Very well professionally done!
Thank you very much!
I think you said the one pipe sticking out is a water line, typically do you also have the drain lines and electircal in before pouring the concrete? Is this covered in your course?
So this video was made 4 years ago, did you ever finish that 8 week program? and where could I find it ?
Really good video wanting to do a garage myself this content really helps. Thanks keep it coming
Glad I can help! Thanks for watching!
Great video and thank you for posting it. You and your guys make it look so easy. I have yet to pour a slab and looking to do a couple at my place. One will be 22'x15' and one is 14'x15'. Nothing big, just bigger than I have done. In the past I have done small footings for equipment and steel storage racks and that has been it. Biggest I have done was 7' x 5'x 16" deep for a material rack that held 1"-4" thick pieces of steel 4'x8'. Appreciate the information and look forward to more videos.
I'm learning how to prep and complete an slab for a tiny house.
Great job. I deff love doing concrete
I want to build a TINY House too! with a slab on grade foundation, I think that is a strong foundation! God bless! ^_^
With a thicken edge slab does the inspector question the depth of the footer part of the slab?In NC frost line is 12 inches. The edge of the slab is usually 16”. Do you dig down the 16” on the perimeter or build it up?
Thanks Dan
Im pouring a concrete slab this coming summer, 16x24 just like this one but for a new garage. I plan on scraping up the sod, and then leveling out the area myself then adding my crushed rock. is there any tips for a first timer? things to watch out for or ways not to royally mess it up ? lol
Learning a great deal from your videos. Thanks Pal
Man I love your videos!! I’ve learned so much from your videos!!
amazing video. I just want to learn
Thanks Mike love your work. BTW what size mesh do you need for a slab.
I always enjoy learning from your videos and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I've always have wanted to learn to do concrete work.
Awesome, thanks Mike!
Cool video. First video of your channel I’ve watched. Looked great. Will be doing a slab for my garage soon!
Hey Mike what kind of tips and recommendations do you have for someone that's trying to find a concrete supplier to work with on a project and what questions do want to ask your concrete supplier about the specifics of your project and making sure were on the same page.
I like to do as much on my own as I can. Thanks for the great videos!!!
You bet!
For very little cost and just a little bit of planning they could have at least put sewer plumbing. Nice video and great work!
They tried but couldn't get the plumber to show up. They had a short window to start building and just decided to get the slab in and build, then do the plumbing after.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge! Cheers from NZ
Love this video. Do you have any videos on how to poor a slab for a two story house aprx 27x27?
great video. i like to do as much as i can around the house myself and i've done some pretty big projects like building screen porch, decks, cutting trees, pouring walkways, etc. always looking to learn to do things easier and more professionally.
Awesome Leroy!
@@MikeDayConcrete i could use some advice. i need to pour a driveway between the house and a retaining wall that are about 10 ft apart and stretch for about 20 ft. what's the best way to set the forms and pour the concrete?
We'll use a product called Iso-strip off for the forms and glue them to the existing house foundation and retaining wall. It's a piece of 1/2" foam by 4" or 6" that will allow for expansion and contraction. Here's my page about it: www.everything-about-concrete.com/concrete-expansion-joints.html
@@MikeDayConcrete thank you. read your page and it is very clear.
