  • Everything you need to know about Jehovah's Witnesses from today's guest, Lloyd Evans (The Reluctant Apostate), who tells me about his own upbringing in the JW church. (Click subscribe if you enjoy.) The UA-camr and ex-JW reveals everything about blood transfusions, domestic abuse and his own upbringing in a family of Jehovah's Witnesses. Lloyd Evans from John Cedars Channel: My (former) life as a Jehovah's Witness.
Please do subscribe - it only takes a sec and is free to do - I need a larger subscriber base to be able to earn any money from the ads UA-cam show!
The older episodes are available on this channel but most are just audio. This is my first time editing the video version together. Subscribe to hear the next ones - next week is a look at an ex-Mormon from the Thank God I'm an Atheist podcast. It'll be available first on my audio podcast and video just for patrons (links below) then up here a month later.

Audio version of the podcast (where most people listen): podfollow.com/on-the-edge-wit...
    Summary:
Lloyd Evans is pretty much the world’s pre-eminent ex-Jehovah’s Witness and authority on the religion, its attractions and its snares. He tells some of the downright craziest and unbelievable stories of his childhood and his time in religion.
So that Jehovah’s Witnesses know, I’m not just picking on them, as I’ve already done episodes on an ex-Muslim whose family are trying to kill her, an ex-Hasidic Jew who believes the community raped her and the son of the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church. You’ll find those in the backlog, by clicking the links above or by visiting my website, andrewgoldpodcast.com.
This is also a special podcast because Ex-Jehovah's Witness Lloyd Evans convinced me, as you’ll hear, of the merits of starting my own Patreon page, and he’s even started contributing himself, which is a really touching gesture from a fellow content maker. Bringing this podcast to you every week is a full-time job, it takes about 40 hours each week. Just go to patreon.com/andrewgold.
Of course, if I’m going to be making money from this, I also have to up my game. I’ve been making an effort to ensure interviewees send me their audio files - so you’ll hear in this one, Lloyd’s voice is absolutely gorgeous. And I’m going to start publishing the video versions of the podcast on UA-cam, with lots of flashy camera angles and high definition.
Anyway, that was my announcement and I don’t want it to eat into any more Lloyd Evans ex-Jehovah’s Witness time. We’re going to be talking about everything from the community’s controversial views on blood transfusions to its purported inaction on child abuse. Lloyd talks eloquently about cognitive dissonance - the way our mind refuses to consider reasoning that runs counter to our engrained idea of how the world works. Lloyd really is an authority on the subject, and if you want to know more, I encourage you to get hold of his acclaimed book - The Reluctant Apostate - and to visit his popular UA-cam page with over 70,000 subscriptions, the John Cedars channel.

I like this guy he tells the absolute truth and 100"% genuine.. He's very respectful in rebuking the religion by way of intelligence not just slamming it without substance. I was brought up as a JW and left quietly when I was 18 as I didn't buy into the teaching and lifestyle. As Lloyd has the same way of thinking and approach as I did his videos help me free the guilt of leaving that I still carry 25 years on.

Even from a cult of one (my mother is the cult leader and the rest of the family buckles under and accepts the regime) I can still relate to Lloyd when he says that it is the *ongoing punishment* (silence) in the place of humanity that makes you so determined to hold on to your interpretation of events like it's carved in stone. If they showed kindness and appreciation for your separate sense of self, you'd be less determined to carve your interpretation of events in stone.

I got a letter yesterday from the local Jehovah’s Witnesses. I was rather shocked since it was totally unsolicited, and it annoyed me that they had my name and address! I found myself imagining this man sitting at a table writing this letter because he was forced to do it. My next thought was of the children I had had as students who were members of the Jehovah's Witnesses. I found myself hoping they had found their way out of that cult. That one letter made me angry and sad for hours!

When her 11 year old came down with cancer- he needed a blood transfusion or he would die. She refused and says she’d made peace with his death. Thank goodness the dr. Went to court and got medical custody and gave him the life saving transfusion. He was so brain washed by then that they had to hold him down to give it to him and he kept banging his head on the headboard . He’s grown now so I don’t know where they are today but I can only hope they all escaped from this horrible cult.

My sister was a JW for 8 years and used to carry on about how when we die we will be just floating in the universe instead of Jehovah taking us up and renewing our life and she wouldn’t have us with her - unfortunately she did have biased behaviour against some members of the family and behaved badly towards them - funny, her husband didn’t become one, and when another Witness member crapped on her financially, she finally left - she became the opposite of their doctrine which I won’t detail here other than taking up smoking and drinking- put it this way, she was more tolerable as a JW than what she became 😂😂😂😂

My sister became a Jehovah's Witness quite some time ago. When she had to have surgery about 15 years ago, she asked me to make the decisions for her if the doctor needed to have any decisions made. I told her, "you know how I feel about the blood thing, if you need it, I will approve it" She said ok, do what you think is best. A JW person came to talk to her. It was interesting because he actually told her that the blood situation, accepting it or not was up to her.
The whole not celebrating birthdays or other holidays it ridiculous.

We just moved from a small very religious city which consists of mostly JW but also Mormon and Christian followers.
We lived in two different neighbourhoods and in both I was given handwritten letters by JW in my Postal Box inviting me to come to their church. Pamphlets were left and it was incredibly persistent until the letters started to include my personal name which I found incredibly off putting. Keep in mind these boxes didn’t have our actual address or our names so how did they know which one was mine or what my name was? If I waved at my neighbours or nodded to them or said Good morning they very rarely responded. If you weren’t in the church you were NOT worthy as a person. This also applies in town at the grocery and hair salon and ice cream shop etc
My neighbours right next to us were slightly different in that they were super friendly at first and tried very hard to entice us to be JW but when they realized that we weren’t interested they refused to acknowledge us at all. No smiles, no hello, leaving the yard when we came outside or pulled into the driveway. It was a complete avoidance almost like we had an invisible plague. I found it all very interesting and I still do. I can’t imagine living a life like theirs which is a big part of the reason why we have moved.

Which I really wanted to sit in on. I met her mother before you know it. They brought me lots of books started studdying with me. Brought my kids books. So I was freshly divorced. My daughter was 6 loaded up her father's briefcase with the JW books I went to check on her she had been going door to door with the books.A neighborhood called me and told me. I thought she was just out in the back yard playing JW. Both kids had tied 1x4 boards in my cherry tree. Put my type writer a bunch of envelopes and writing paper in a box for the office all the books in boxes. It was funny. But when I did not want to continue Cheri brought a bunch of young 20-30 something girls over to study. The more I wanted to stop the more came.

My mom doesn't allow objects in her home to be fabricated with eyes . More specifically she won't abide hand made replicas of an animal or person if it's got eyes . Because only things with soul/ spirit/ spark of divine animated existence have eyes. Of the Plain folks in Pennsylvania Deitch heritage, Brethren Drunkard are one of prayer bonnet wearing groups . She was raised in this way . I'm knda understanding as to why that idea is taught , since much is told as was from the old ways. 1, being, Possibility of the idea of dark or light intentions afoot with such objects . This was taught as a general acceptance of this activity definitely existing . Note the original copy of "Sleepy Hollow" mentions an" Old German Doctor" listed as one possible reason for the paranormal activity there abouts . We still have these healers here , that apply what others would call white witch / faith / herbal healing . Some of these practitioners have, in history, taken a turn towards nefarious. Anyway long story short , if they've known the benefits of the positive (Healing) side of what others would call superstition, then most will err on the side of caution by keeping little guidelines just in case anyone would wish them ill. Moreover Mom won't make one of these likenesses herself , even for her own home . 2, It may also be a respect thing . Like God makes things with divine attributes, not me . Note among Amish woodworking , their toys too will not have eyes. Anyway these type of guidelines are mostly just tradition now for most part , and less a religious big to-do.
