I’m less than 5 minutes in, and already so saddened by his perspective. This very well may be how he feels… but he’s inaccurate in so much of what he’s sharing. His take on “marked with darkness” being black people is asinine. So false. Ridiculously so. I’d love to see someone with actual knowledge rather than someone sharing his skewed opinions. My heart is sad for him that this is how he’s interpreted his experience.
Ah, Utah. Home of the zombie mom. I lived there for 17 years and I know exactly what he's talking about. I saw it every day. I can count on one hand the number of Mormons I knew who were not on anti-depressants. Even the children are medicated. The county he talked about is called "Happy Valley" by Utahns. It's supposed to be the place in Utah where the Mormons are exemplary. Ironic that they have to be so highly medicated.
I know that smile, too. I called it "the desperate smile". It's a forced smile that can be a little manic. I knew so many people who thought it was their fault that they weren't happy. They're taught that if they're living correctly, then they'll be happy.
They're also desperate to be seen as happy. Appearances are very important to Mormons. They say that theirs is the only true religion, and they know that they need to be seen as perfect to keep up the image of having the true religion. That's also why they're so slow to change-change implies that they were wrong before, and they can't admit that. They get around it by announcing a "revelation", which is a message from God given to someone in the Quorum of the Twelve.
The longer I lived in Utah, the less impressed I was with Mormonism. There is a dark side, and a certain amount of unethical behavior, and also polygamy. They're fine with it until you get caught and become news.
I didn't like living there and moved back to my home state as soon as I could. So glad to be back in the free world.
I am Mormon and it was interesting and cringe to listen to this. I hope he’s happy out of the church. I’m still smiling in the church. 😉
I was a member for 52 years and realized only 2 yrs ago that the church all started with a huge lie. In seconds it’s foundation and my whole life as i knew it crumbled. I can understand why those who are still in are commenting here the way they are and those who are close friends with some are standing up for them. Most are truly the most generous people with hearts of gold. I live outside of Utah and that culture is very ingrained in being the perfect “Stepford wife” family. I lived in Provo for several years & it was complete culture shock. Outside of Utah there is not quite as much of the judgmental mentality. There is not as much pressure to live up to a certain standard and there is more diversity in the community. I definitely relate to most of what this guy’s experience is with the church.

I took a coarse back in college in 1999 called phsycolgy of cults. The professor was great. We touched upon many different cults and scientology was one that was brought up even back then. I've been interested ever since in cults and mindsets. The last few years, BC of the internet and all the information available about Scientology, I've watched everything and anything about it. Mr. Rinder and Mrs. Remini with the show was fantastic in bringing to light what Scientology is al about. Thank you for all the research and info you and everyone puts out. I suggest Aaron Smith-Levin's Growing Up in Scientology channel for balanced discussions and analysis. He just passed 100k! You may have seen Aaron on joint interviews that take place half on Aaron's channel on half on this one.
It was on his channel that I found the phrase, "The Aftermath Foundation can help you if you blow," which is more helpful than yelling "Xenu!" at people. Offering something helpful is better than confronting them with things that their training makes them shut down on contact with.
Especially if people in the Sea Org leave or, in Scientology jargon, blow, they'll just owe even more money to Scientology, and will have difficulties finding a place to live, etc. The Aftermath Foundation can help them with that and a million other small difficulties that they'd run across outside of CoS, which can add up pressure quickly, especially if their family is still in Scientology and considers them suppressive people.
Aaron's heart-rending story can be seen on Netflix (in the US at least) in the first season either episode three or seven. Their neighbor, who was a fellow Scientologist at that time, was more concerned about how their disconnection (shunning) was going to affect his dog rather than his small children! Sigh.
That would be such an interesting class!

I had read on the LDS religion both in and out of college and briefly lived in Idaho with the Mormon Temple visible from my front yard. When I saw Book of Mormon in Texas (which is not known for a high Mormon population), I was laughing at jokes that were flying over the heads of most of the audience. One of my favorite memories about the show was the guy in front of me practically falling out of his chair laughing. I knew right away he had to have been a Mormon (most likely an ExMo) because he laughed at stuff even I didn’t get. He thoroughly enjoyed the show. I thoroughly enjoyed him enjoying the show.

Wow…. I’m an ex-Morgan too. I was raised in a strong loving Mormon family and I raised my children the same way. I left when I was in my 50’s. Dan has a lot correct, BUT he must not gone to the same Wards/church I went to. So much of the weird things he talked about I’ve never heard of. I have a very dear friend who grew up in an LDS family that had interpreted thing in a weird way too. EVERY organization/religion has a mix of people with different interpretations of thing.
There is a belief that within the religion that they are happier than everybody everybody else, but I never ever felt it was a judgement if you weren’t happy, but I did feel self judgement. Too bad Dane felt that judgement. There are so so many beautiful things I love about the LDS church, and in many ways I miss it. When I join my husband at a meeting, I still feel the love and care from the Ward/congregation. If anyone in our neighborhood/Ward area is in need, regardless of religious status, members jump in to help. It’s beautiful.
Mormons are just people, most are trying to live a good life and be kind.
Thank you! Life-long member. I smile at people so that they know I care about them. Nothing else. Nothing weird. Just cuz I want them to known that someone sees them. I have had many people thank me for being the only person to smile at them all day. If it does make me weird then let the weirdness reign. Do some research people. Smiling is good for you.

Been to California, served a mission in the Baltics, now I'm in Utah and Dan has it nailed 100%. Your circles must not have judged you like this, or it went way over your head. Remember, it's passive aggressive, so it doesn't always hit paydirt on those it's directed at.
People love bomb ne too, when I go, but I always suspect that ulterior motive of evangelism, unless proven otherwise. Most times that is exactly what it is, lately I have been praised by middle aisle Mormons for showing up as a loud and proud atheist former Mormon as being very brave. Made me blush. twas sweet.
Mormons are were the cotton pickin flower of England, according to Dickens (myth)... always felt that was because they were the most innocent and naïve. So not just people: preyed upon souls.

I’ve just dont believe some of the doctrine but one thing I do believe in is to love your neighbors so I’m going to look for the good in people and sincerely smile and care.
BTW, there are a couple of people who still love bomb me and I think it’s funny because it’s so transparent.
I have family that are Mormon. I've always said that Mormon's do a better job of outwardly showing the Christian faith than other non-Mormon Christians. But I still think they're misguided.
They think that good deeds get them to heaven.
From my perspective, doing good deeds makes a bit of heaven here.

But they're not just doing good deeds for the sake of doing them. They're doing it because they're told to, to look good to non-believers, etc. As an ex-fundamentalist I can say that the ulterior motives corrupt every single good deed you do.

Cognitive dissidence. A real deal breaker is The Book of Abraham. I don’t know how there is any way around that one. The story: some Mormon dupes bought an Egyptian scroll as a gift to Joe Smith. Since it was in hieroglyphics, and nobody knew or could ever know how to decipher it, Joe interpreted the scroll as “The Book of Abraham”. There were holes in one of the pictures in the ancient papyrus. So Joe also filled in the missing parts of the drawing which had figures cut off at the neck. As a foreword to the book Bro Joe says something like “This translation was dictated to ME, by God and is infallible. There’s no way it’s wrong so y’all better believe it!” Problem was: Dumbass did not know that Champollion had deciphered hieroglyphics 10 years earlier! Joe just didn’t know it. The papyrus wound up being a boiler plate page from “Book of the Dead”. Copied hundreds or thousands of times with minimal to ZERO debate in the actual meaning. The heads he drew on the figures and labels were ridiculous. And he named the canopic jars in the picture as gods. SO, if Joe is infallible yet it is provable he is 100% wrong… GAME OVER.

My Episcopal (Anglican) parish in southern Idaho built a new church building. Our priest knew a LDS Bishop through a clergy interfaith group. When it came time for our move, the LDS moved everything (pews, altar, all the trappings.) LDS women set up the kitchen and provided a potluck luncheon for everyone. After, we had a hymn sing in the sanctuary. An all around wonderful experience!

Gee Andrew thanks a lot! I’m Canadian 😂 and I don’t smile much at all except now when you mentioned Canadians, I laughed my head off. The Mormons I’ve met weren’t so much smiley but more serious and polite. I’ve explained I’m not Christian and don’t intend to be. That usually ends it.

I lived in Palmyra, NY for several years growing up back in the late 60's and the Mormon influence was all around but had very little impact on the town in general. Palmyra is known for having 4 churches on the 4 corners of the main town intersection and none of them are Mormon. The biggest event was the Mormon Pageant at Hill Cumorah once a year which would flood the town B and B's and made Mormonism a thing in town for a short time. As a joke we went searching for he golden plates similar to to Oak Island treasure hunt fantasy. They had very little secretive or culty activities and the kids went to public schools, but had no impact on the overall experiences of being a kid. We all knew who Joseph smith was though we knew little more than he was a conman ...

Bless his heart, but if he thinks that there is little difference between Mormonism and Mainstream or orthodox Christianity, then he really doesn't know much about Christianity. That really makes sense though. Why should he know a lot about orthodox Trinitarian Christianity, whether Eastern, Western, or Protestant? No reason he should. But I think it's more than "splitting hairs" to observe that the LDS are way, way out there away from mainstream Christianity.
I live in Mexico, and happen to have a lot of family in the USA that have been living there for decades now, and became Mormons in the way.
Everytime they come here, they always end up talking about God and questioning our beliefs.
But they totally lost me when I found out that right after my grandma's death (who was a highly devoted Catholic), they baptized her under their "religion" without the permission of her other six children.
I don't really have a connection to my cousins, they have all usually judged my sister and me for not getting married and having a job instead of a family. Yes, my uncle has said some interesting things to my dad about it. Thank God my dad is a nice man, I would've never talked to him again. And thank God for the dad that I have.
I feel very uncomfortable everytime they come around. It's like they are always full of joy, but also implicitly aggressive when it comes to talk about religion and other stuff.
I don't even know how to explain that feeling.

@@myBquest My daughter joined the LDS after a couple of missionaries came to her door. I was already familiar with many of their practices as my SIL and her family belong to the church. One day my daughter asked me for the location of my grandparents graves as she was going to have a ceremony to "baptize" them. I refused to tell her telling her that they had all been baptized one hundred years before she was born and didn't need the help from Mormons. She told me that she was going to have me baptized after I died as well so I told her that I'd come back and haunt her if she did that 😂😂😂

I googled it and the AP news article said, “After discussions with Mokotoff and other Jewish leaders, the LDS church in 1995 established a rule barring baptisms of Holocaust victims except in rare cases where they are direct ancestors. It also bars proxy baptisms on celebrities.” There is a firewall to prevent names of celebrities and holocaust victims being baptized now.

What most people don’t realize is that there were HUNDREDS of cults/splinter groups/sects in the 1830s an 1840s - and the biggest hotspot for them was in Joe Smith’s neck of the woods in NY. But with extremely few exceptions they all died out as fads and/or when their prophet/leader was outed as a scammer/scoundrel. Mormonism held on almost as a fluke. They were helped by Joe being ‘martyred’. But I think the biggest reason was the promise that the faithful would become gods of their own universe was perhaps the main draw that allowed it to soldier on.

After living in a 99% Mormon neighborhood for 24 years, I couldn’t take it anymore. My husbands boss, the CEO of a large company, called my husband a heathen in a staff meeting. And the Mormons I knew who had left the church said I was lucky that I had never been a member because it’s SO much worse when you have been a member and left.
I once read that the children of a catholic family in Provo experienced terrible bullying at school and snide remarks from adults. The kids were transferred to a private school.
Christianity is based on grace, Jesus saves us through faith. Mormonism is based on works. The reason they take so many antidepressants is because you can’t do it on your own, its impossible! Most cults throw a little Jesus in there to make them a little light.
The first part of the interview with Dan Beecher was interesting as I learned of his experiences and views on Mormonism but by the end, I decided that I am not sure I would want to listen to him again. He is very nice and engaging but as my husband often says, so are serial killers! He lives life like a person that decided that diets don't work so not only am I going to eat a piece of cake but am going to eat the whole cake every night and then one day wonder why he is now 400 pounds. Healthy relationships consider how their actions affect others. Dan's quest for "freedom" has now made him self centered.
Let me also recommend watching “ Mormon Stories” for a pretty good view of the cult. I’ve been a member for 65 years and found so much FACTS in the last two years that I quit.

I’m an x Mormon now Christian and fairly researched on both. Mormonism is closer to Scientology than Christianity. There are no similarities in the theological beliefs of Mormons and Christians.

I was raised in the Mormon church and left a couple of years ago and I think the core of why Mormons are always happy is that we were taught that all negative feelings come from Satan. So if you didn't project happiness or if you weren't happy, you were being influenced by Satan. Couple that with the teachings of you can't have pure joy outside of the gospel by that they mean the church. So by admitting or showing that your life is imperfect or that you are unhappy you are saying that you are not living the Gospel and are being influenced by Satan.

Interesting interview. However your guest is wrong about Mormons and JW being "Christians". When you change the core, you can't claim, it's the same, just because they are using the name of Jesus or "Bible", when the bible is change.
I have some Mormon friends. Wonderful people as there are with most religions. Odd aspects to the religion though. The story of the golden plates in America, is even more difficult to believe than golden tablets in a more ancient land. Like the flood memories through countless religions, I’m sure there is truth there and actual events shaped the stories. I think that it’s so important not to be too dogmatic in any faith. Live by the values which support each other and don’t hurt anyone. It shouldn’t be hard. There are so many similarities in belief across different religions if you choose to see them.

I took a vacation in the 90’s and Utah was one of the states I passed through. Yes , it’s true , everyone was happy and smiling. It was Creepy! It was like being in a , “ Stepford Wives” situation. I'm not sure he has a full experience of the Relief Society. In my experience (and I was the first counselor in my Relief Society) anytime a sister would start to gossip she was stopped and reminded about how it's wrong to gossip and not to judge the other person.
The comparison between LDS and Scientology is pretty close. Joseph Smith/LRH "discovering" the truth, controlling people's behaviour (including sex), the cosmology (Xenu and the battle in heaven, fallen angels, etc). Joseph and his "wives" and LRH was a womanizer with 3 wives and probably several mistresses. Great interview, Andrew - thanks!
The big difference is that Scientology is NOT a religion. LRH never believed in god or had any spiritual elements in his policies. The only reason that Scientology portrays itself as a “church” is for the tax exempt status. It’s a billion dollar cult not a religious organization at all. If you consider LDS a cult it’s at least a religious one 😊

Latter Day Saints whole premise is Jesus Christ…. I’m not sure where or who has given u this misinformation. Please read the Book of Mormon which is an account of Jesus Christ, (his birth and death and purpose) and the prophets in the Americas. Dude when I lived on a commune we had church 6 hours a day 6 days a week. I broke a lot of rules which kept me sane but dang what a nightmare

I grew up Mormon and my dad was the one who did the cooking and cleaning- my mom wore the pants- it may have been that way in the 1800’s but so was everyone else.
Wow. I've been LDS my whole life going back to the 1830s. I guess it's influenced a lot by how your parents present it. It's been a huge part of my life and has seen me through a lot of difficulty, but it's my relationship with God and Jesus Christ that means the most. People really don't know much about us and have some very weird ideas. But my friends know me and dont pay much attention to much that is negative. And they ask me if they want to know.

Under the banner of heaven is more about the off shoots of the Mormon church than the big corporation version that calls the shots in Utah. However, I will say that with the influence they have over the members thinking, most members would go along with the things in the book if the church leadership told them to move in that direction.
I also remember being told that anyone who was neutral in the pre-existance also end up with a handicap...or they end up with lots of mental issues or drug issues... basically they struggle more than others.

Dan nailed it concerning Mormon theology, behavior and practices. Very refreshing! I had myself excommunicated (now called taken off the roles or some other euphonism) from the Mormon church during the height of cultural upheaval and the sexual revolution in the early 70's. I was 23 and single, with a toddler, having married a return missionary in the temple at 19 and divorced at 21.
Because I was curious, I looked into other religions and spiritual traditions from around the world, both past and present. It didn't take long to see that the "only true church" repetitious drone I'd heard from the time I could understand words was ridiculous. That, along with the racism, sexism and hypocrisy of church leadership sealed the deal.
Still, it was hard to leave the religion because it was it was so infused into my upbringing. I had grown up hearing that there was only sadness and degradation on the other side, and leaving would destroy my family.
Because of the insulated way I was raised within the church, I was somewhat naive, so integrating into the wider world was difficult at times. There was no internet to go to for backup. There were no safety nets. It was a complete life overhaul, but I have never regretted my decision.
Mormons are taught to Obey, Obey, Obey ... so looking to oneself for guidance can be difficult. But, If there is one thing I would say to those who are on the fence about leaving it would be: The Holy Ghost, still small voice--or whatever you choose to call it--that you have been taught to listen to does not come to you from the outside. It is within you. YOU are your own guide. YOU hold the power in your life. Don't look outside of yourself for what is already within you. There is freedom and joy on the other side. Find it!

Interesting. But he says at one point that mormonism is a kind of Christianity. To think such a thing, a person has to have no idea what christianity is. That's fair enough, since he was a mormon all his life, but let's put it on record that the reason that christians don't accept mormonism as being a kind of christianity is because it doesn't hold to any of the basic tenets. If a "church" doesn't teach that Jesus is completely God as well as completely man, born from a virgin and died in the place of all of us because we're all by nature sinners who need a saviour... then it's not christian. Mormonism is so far from this that it even teaches that satan was Jesus' brother. To a Christian, this idea is no less than blasphemous.
Mormonism believe 2 out of 3 of those things. Who gets to decide whose Christian? Is there a committee?
@@blackalien6873 Christians by definition are supposed to believe what the Bible says, and that it teaches us what Christianity is. Once a church starts valuing other books as highly or more so than what the early church and Jewish followers of God decided was God-inspired scripture, then that's a sign that there's something not christian about it. Added to this, if the additional "holy scripture" actually contradicts what the Bible says, then that clinches it: it's not christian.
The fundamental issue in Christianity, according the Bible, is what to do about sin. The Bible tells us that sin came in through the first man and woman and that because of that, we all have it (like a genetic illness). So sin isn't fundamentally about the acts that we do, but about our nature, what we ARE (the acts are a consequence). And the fact is that although we can "behave", we can't do anything about what we ARE. This is why we need a saviour.
The book of mormon says that the sin of adam and eve was a GOOD thing and that we're not all consequently tarnished by their act, so we're not by nature "sinners" but rather we choose to do wrong things sometimes. This is a direct and basic contradiction of the Bible which means that in fact human beings don't need "saving" at all, because we're not helpless. Therefore the purpose of Christ coming will necessarily be completely different. Mormons believe there is a god called the father, another one called the son and another one call the holy spirit. They believe that god is an exalted, perfect man, that human beings have the potential to become gods of their own planet (that's star trek level weirdness), that Jesus is the literal, biological son of God and Mary. This is all totally contrary to what the Bible teaches. Mormonism uses a lot of christian concepts and words, but their meaning is COMPLETELY different.
We had a cleaning lady who was Mormon. They enrolled her whole family. She was clearly not a wealthy person and they made her pay more than tithe, and the youngsters work tirelessly as "missionaries" without pay -and made them think it was the best thing that could happen to them. But I about exploded when she said she was ecstatic that she was finally able to get her Bible... I didn't understand. Isn't the Bible a relatively cheap book? Nope, this one was about $150 😠

I used to speak wa nice couple. They were interesting. I was confused because she was a pharmacist which I didn't think went with their beliefs. It got to the stage I agreed to pray with them but I stopped midway. This was because the husband said I should repent for having my son. I was a single parent. He insisted I should state my son was a sin and that I should repent for having him. That was their last visit

I remember this one time when my Mormon sister tried baiting me into dissing someone's clothing choice (the target of her comments was wearing short overalls with a tank top). She legit got *upset* with me when I told her that I didn't care what others wore. It really threw me for a loop, lemme tell ya. Passive-aggressive? Yeah, that's definitely the Mormon way. Dan is spot on with several other things, too, like the 'always happy' mantra. My mom spent nearly the entirety of my childhood scolding me for having normal emotions, a lot like how Abuela Alma treated Pepa in Encanto ('Pepa, you have a cloud.' 'I know, mama!').
The one thing I'd like to dispute are his points on racism in the church. Not all members hide it. I grew up hearing my abuser (long story) saying the phrase 'pants up, don't loot' in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Also, the demonization of PoC isn't just from the 'war in heaven'; it's also deeply tied into the Book of Mormon itself. The people who supposedly sailed to the Americas with a boat designed by god? Yeah, two of the brothers were 'good' and two of the brothers were 'bad', and the bad brothers' lineage became known as the Lamanites, and they were cursed with darker skin because of it. Aside from that, pretty spot-on.
Dan explained that in the story, the Jews that sailed to the Americas became the Indigenous peoples of America. I found that part of the story really interesting but confusing because wouldn't you then be recruiting- or making the Native tribes people your prophets and leaders? I have a feeling the answer is no, though, because they would be believed to be the descendants of the "bad ones". Another question, does this mean that Jews are viewed in high regard?
@@erciliaflores Sorry, took me a while to notice your reply. No, Jews aren't regarded highly at all. Last I checked, most if not all of the quorum of the twelve and the quorum of the seventy (the highest-ranking members of the church) are white men. Some were white men from Europe, others white men who grew up in America, but essentially just white. I haven't ever heard of a black or indigenous member in the quorums, so if they exist, they're not widely acknowledged by members. As for bringing in indigenous Americans to be members in general, yeah, that's a thing, but it's not a focus. Back in the early days, Mormons did contribute to the erasure of indigenous cultures by way of missionary work, but it wasn't about revering the indigenous people in any way. Those that were brought into the church in the early days were taught to forsake their 'evil' heritage.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that it wasn't just about their ancestors being the 'bad ones'. It very much revolved around the idea that dark skin in general was a curse from Yahweh. That includes non-indigenous people who have dark skin. Slaves from Africa? Evil sinners because of their dark skin. It wasn't until after racism started dying down in general that the church switched from 'dark skin, evil people' to the 'new revelation' of 'just convert them'. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were very much racist, through and through. Some church members use that as justification for micro-aggressions while others try to play it off as 'the past'.
My experience is somewhat different.
I have heard it said that the type of happiness that the Church teaches is eternal happiness which translates to joy, as in, I've got that joy, joy, joy, joy ~ down in my heart ~ and, BTW, when did it become a sin to smile ???

The Mormons that I have met, on a very superficial level, are nice people but their beliefs are odd. If you read the book "The 19th Wife" it gives you a pretty good look at Mormonism. It's a work of fiction, but there is historical data within the book that helps to illuminate the foundation of this religious group. I have been to Temple Square in Salt Lake City to see what it is like. Mitt Romney, who ran for President of the US years ago, was a Mormon. His faith was a turn-off to me because there are many splinter groups of Mormonism that still practice polygamy. Mainstream Mormonism did practice polygamy at some point in their early development. Mitt Romney, in recent times - during Trump's office, is an upstanding man it needs to be said. He did not just blindly go along with Trump and his cronies. He has integrity. His religious belief, however, really makes me pause. Mormonism is a man-made religion and was founded by Joseph Smith. Scientology, as you know, was founded by L. Ron Hubbard but is much more dangerous. I have never met a Scientologist on the East Coast - I have only heard of them being in California. So as far as I know - Scientology is not as widespread as Mormonism.
Romney is despicable, no matter what kind of LDS he is.

LDS to this day has polygamy. I was at a Panera restaurant 4 years ago and listened to two LDS women talk about their husbands, their money issues, all linked heavily to this the --> "HE'S COURTING A CHEERLEADER! HE"S COURTING A CHEERLEADER!" problem going to lead to bankruptcy as the new wife needs her own fancy house. There are plenty of LDS around here in Denver Metro (Colorado) and I just smile, nod, and remove myself from their influence/impact. GAME ON with that crew.
This is not regular LDS. Those ladies are Fundamental Latter Day Saints or FLDS. Interesting book though “Mormon Polygamy “ by Richard Van Wagoner. Well documented. Good facts about the origins and continuing polygamy. 😮
One other area that I would like to address is the image of nice, wholesome Mormons and its appeal. Like all organized religions, there are pockets of people who are genuinely kind and nice and want to love others well and others are drawn in because of this but that is more rare than not. More often the dynamics is that everyone wants the Hallmark story for their lives and so people within those walls are treated like figurines in a Christmas village scene that you set up for Christmas. All have expected roles to support their views of community(snow and all) but the real test of love comes when you ask the "why" questions pushing their buttons. Then do they still want you in their Christmas village?
MORMONISM IS NOT "Like other religions". However, that's part of the rhetoric that gets that 10% still comin in.

My favorites by far.... an LDS family in California, and a really nice JW in Texas.
The latter (Marissa) was from Italy married an American soldier and came to Texas after WW2. When I got her talking about food we never stopped 😋so many wonderful recipes. They ended up sending someone else with her (I suppose they wanted more progress), did not last long after that. The new lady and I had a disagreement and they took me off the list.
I still let them in though.

I've made friends with a super nice Nigerian lady, a JW, but it is sad that she and I can't be friends unless she's pushing the doctrine on me. And yeah, I wondered if she had to be accompanied, either in person or by phone, by another JW member during her visits with me to keep an eye on her? Very controlling to say the least! Which is a shame because she's a genuinely kind person!
A couple of young LDS men were told to contact a former Mormon who lived across the street from me. I told them that I didn't know where he lived, but it was obviously part of their assigned mission to locate this man and bring him back into the fold.
He told me that when he was a child, someone in the Mormon church decided that he was a healer, so he had to pretend to be a healer. He knew that this was nonsense, and it helped to drive him away. And, he was gay, so I guess there was no place for him in the church. There's supposedly forgiving and forgetting, but it's more like "stay in the fold and we'll pray for you to not be who you are".
42:15 - While it is true that the Community of Christ (Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) denied that Joseph had plural wives through the 1960s or so, since the 1980s (aprox) they have admitted that Joseph Smith did indeed have multiple wives.
Years ago I was I charge of hiring staff for a large gym. Mostly ages 18 to early twenties who wanted part time, decent pay, and a free membership. I am not Mormon and not in an area with many Mormons. Long story short, after hiring a young man who was Mormon, I never looked anywhere else for part time staff. Those young people were dependable, honest, friendly, smart, etc... They didn't proselytize, gossip, cause internal strife. Have never before or since had such a good experience with a group of young people.. I still run into some of them from time to time and they, like all young parents proudly introduce me to their offspring. I am surprised that the majority of them have left the Mormon religion though joined other Christian churches. They seemed so secure in their upbringing. I really did enjoy meeting them and getting to know them.

Andrew, another thought provoking interview. So many different areas were slightly touched on that could be topics by themselves. Dan Beecher mentioned that Christianity and Mormonism are similar. Christianity does not include Joseph Smith but has its own issues. Although a "christian", I am not sure that I like that word because it includes every church with walls that has abusive stories and has been inseluar. Both the Mormons and Christans have cases of abuse that could give you material for topics for years. More often than not people attend organized religions to serve themselves in some way rather than to look to meet the needs of others and so as I live outside of the church walls, I prefer to be known as a Jesus follower which emcompasses a broader diverse group. I have friends who are Mormon and Hindus who claim to be Jesus followers that are more kindred spirits to me than many "Christians" that I have known over the years. We see Jesus as our lifeline with nothing else added.
Some hairs need to be split. Mormonism is NOT Christianity. Different Jesus.
The Bible teaches that God is one.
Trinitarians teach that God is 3-in-1.
Unhappiness is the other side of the coin to happiness; you can't have one without the other.

I think that there's always been some people have been fascinated by Native Americans, but that in the case of Mormonism, the origin of the point that you are wondering about truly lies in the idea that people back then in that area had of America as the New Jerusalem. So for America to be a holy location and yet still Christian, Jesus had to have appeared here. How do we get Jesus to visit? A bunch of Jewish people came over! Oh, and Eden was really in America, too.
There was a guy in Australia who was I believe a Mormon Bishop who was so excited about DNA because now we can really prove that the Book of Mormon is true! But for some reason the people at Brigham Young University pushing back on the idea of doing a genetic study! And then he found out the groups were not related and in anguish turned to somebody higher up in Utah who basically told him to just play it off. I don't know if he's now a Christian or an atheist or an agnostic but something like that. I wish I could remember his name. I don't think he's on UA-cam, I remember reading his story on some website and it was just fascinating! I really hope I can find his story again because the details were just marvelous and he sounded like such a great guy. It's too bad he had to go through that hell, if you'll excuse the expression.

I asked a Mormon how they have their book of Mormon, when the Bible contradicts having other texts in addition to it. They just pushed their prophet to say it was ok.
You really need to read more and educate yourself before blathering on the internet. The Book of Revelation is what you refer to and it warns against any addition to "this book". The Bible didn't even exist at that time. What "book" do you think he meant? Ignorance appears to be your constant companion.

This guy is not exaggerating. I grew up mormon, in Provo. The Church is the most important thing in my parents' lives, and has been since before I met them.
Since their 9 children have all left the church, they believe that they failed in life.

Mormons have a DIFFERENT Jesus Christ than Protestant Christians. We Protestants would NEVER call Jesus the BROTHER of Lucifer! Mormons are some of the nicest people I know, however, they "preach a different Gospel"(as the Apostle Paul would say). Plus...we don't wear the "magic" underwear, either. There are literally dozens of differences in the two belief systems.
