A video rental shop/store is a physical retail business that rents home videos such as movies, prerecorded TV shows, video game discs and other content. Typically, a rental shop conducts business with customers under conditions and terms agreed upon in a rental agreement or contract, which may be implied, explicit, or written. Many video rental stores also sell previously-viewed movies and/or new, lots of unopened movies.
In the 1980s, video rental stores rented VHS and Beta tapes of movies, although most stores dropped Beta tapes when VHS won the format war late in the decade. In the early 2000s, video rental stores began renting DVDs, a digital format with higher resolution than VHS; DVDs eventually replaced videocassettes. Millions and millions of video rentals are also offered in other business such as grocery stores, drugstores or convenience stores.

I remember the mom & pop video store where my brothers and I use to go. Once we pick our regular movie to watch one of my brothers would go in the room in back of the store to get his movies , I use to want to follow him but he would not let me. Once I became a teen I found out what was behind that corner in back!😂

Stores like these were way better than the streaming services we have today. There were no algorithms and there were no contract based restrictions on the types of content they had. They had all the Disney movies, Universal, Warner Bros...

hell yeah VHS tapes is like one of my memorable things from my childhood, I get so emotional thinking about it. that and nintendo 64...the early 2000's was still good even though DVD's were out but VHS just has that thing

Not to mention many of them had an "Adults Only" section tucked away in the back.

I Remember, My Husband Jason David, our three children, our 3-year-old daughter named Sarah, our 6-year-old son named Ben, and our 8-year-old son named Peter, and I would get into our Dodge Minivan, and we would drive into town, from our Farm where we lived in Canton, It had a Blockbuster Video in Town, we would go over to it, Sarah, Ben, and Peter would each pick out their Favorite Movie, while Jason David and I would pick out our favorite Movie, we would check them out, and go back home, sometimes Sarah, Ben, and Peter would each watch their movies, and when they're asleep, Jason David and I would be watching our movie, and our Top 90 Favorite Movies of The 80s, 90s, 2000s is.

We had our first VCR in '85. The crash seemed a long, long way away. Item: Late 2020, Family Video, the last American video store chain, closes all its stores.

@@sherryhannah9262 Hi, Sherry. Well, video stores became a huge part of the culture, didn't they? We went as a group to the video store every Friday night to get movies for the weekend. Everybody got their pick. Lots of movie nights. It may be just me, but Red Box, as a vending machine on a sidewalk outside a Walgreens, does not capture the fun of the big video store, do you think? Miss those days.

'86 is the year the first place opened in my area: "Montreal Stereo Video". It's a Greek grocery now, LOL.

It was a Sanyo, and it had a _corded_ remote control.

A slice of history. They're all long gone now in 2020. The world of technology moves on.
We got our first VCR in 1992. By 2006, we'd completely transitioned to DVD. In 2019, I bought a Blu Ray player. We also stream movies and TV shows online. The 80s seem like eons ago at this stage.
