  • "Healing Can Be Yours." Written by Dr Norman Vincent Peale and read by Dr Ian Ellis-Jones. This piece comes from Dr Peale’s book You Can Win (New York: Abingdon-Cokesbury, 1938). Grateful acknowledgements are due to Guideposts and the Peale Center for Positive Thinking. All rights reserved.
NOTE. In this excerpt from his book You Can Win Dr Peale uses the terms “neurotic” and “neurotic person.” In 1980 the American Psychiatric Association removed the term “neurosis” from its diagnostic manual as part of a revamp to standardize the criteria for mental illnesses. Today, neurosis is not a stand-alone mental condition. Instead, doctors most often put its symptoms in the same category as anxiety disorder. While neuroticism is no longer considered a mental health diagnosis, researchers and clinicians continue to investigate this aspect of personality. In any event, it should be noted that Dr Peale uses the term “neurotic [person]” in a slightly different sense, namely, to refer to a person who is making a faulty or imperfect adjustment to life.
The Rev. Dr Norman Vincent Peale (1898-1993) was an American minister of religion, spiritual philosopher, best-selling author, publisher, broadcaster, lecturer, speaker and Presidential envoy. His many books include The Art of Living (1937), You Can Win (1938), Faith is the Answer: A Psychiatrist and a Pastor Discuss Your Problems (1940) [with Smiley Blanton MD], A Guide to Confident Living (1948), The Art of Real Happiness (1950) [with Smiley Blanton MD], The Power of Positive Thinking (1952), Stay Alive All Your Life (1957), The Amazing Results of Positive Thinking (1959), The Tough-Minded Optimist (1961), Sin, Sex and Self-Control (1965), The Healing of Sorrow (1966), Enthusiasm Makes the Difference (1967), You Can if You Think You Can (1974), The Positive Power of Jesus Christ (1980), Power of the Plus Factor (1987), The Power of Positive Living (1990), This Incredible Century (1990), Bible Power for Successful Living (1993) [with Donald T. Kauffman], My Favorite Bible Passages (1995), Life Beyond Death (1996), Positive Thinking Bible: Experience the Bible with Norman Vincent Peale (1998), Navigate: How the Bible Can Help You in Every Aspect of Your Life (2013), and Confidence: Biblical Truths for Discovering God's Potential for You (2013). A life-sized bronze statue of Dr Peale, sculpted by John M. Soderberg, was installed in the Fifth Avenue churchyard of Marble Collegiate Church in May 1998 to mark the 100th anniversary of Peale’s birth.
Dr Ian Ellis-Jones (born 1955) is an Australian academic, lawyer and published author. He has also worked for many years as a minister and teacher of New Thought, mindfulness and meditation and he regularly gives talks and lectures to community groups and other organisations on philosophy, practical psychology, religion and spirituality. The author of several books, his most recent book is Making Australia Positive (2023), which is both a history of New Thought in Australia and a dual biography of two great Australian New Thought leaders of yesteryear, namely, Grace M. Aguilar and Veni Cooper-Mathieson.
