Thank you Charles. I tried a variation of your charcoal fixitif method and I was amazed. I painted in an old cottonwood from Capital Reef, NP in charcoal and fixed it. No Alcohol was needed. I then thought that I would put in a watercolor underpainting for sky, background and foreground foliage as well as a road color. Alas, Watercolor just beaded up. I then tried a diluted acrylic under painting and it worked beautifully. Next step will be Nupastel and alcohol, then soft pastel as you demonstrated. I can't tell you how grateful I am that you shared your ideas for me to adapt. I wanted you to know that I am grateful and I hope I can come and visit you someday in your quaint little Arkansas town. Blessings, Lonny

Thank you! It was so helpful for me to see how you are working in real time. And I love your calm and friendly way of talking. My first piece after I watched you video was so much better than the ones before. I really improved because of you. I appreciate it so much!

It amazes me that every stage of the painting, right down to the charcoal underpainting is a painting itself.

Thanks for sharing your studio space and process. I haven’t seen someone do a charcoal value study under the underpainting until today. Brilliant! Look forward to part 2!

I absolutely love your studio. I really miss the farming community I moved away from in California.
Thank you for doing these videos
Oh by the way, I love your work as well, or play whatever you want to deem it.
    Ciao for now!

I got some Uart pastel paper. I'm doing a painting right now. Its the best I think. Building up over the black takes layers, but this paper has endless layering ability. No fixative. Its rough but it blends n holds color so beautifully. My fingertip is sore lol. This paper will make you better it is nice. It is perfect for pan too but takes lots of layers. I'm very happy with it

So interesting watching your technique with alcohol and water. Also, I like the combination of pastel and charcoal! Loved the mini tour of your studio and seeing your pastel setup!

This was so interesting. I had not thought of vine charcoal. I am just learning soft pastels and had only done alcohol wash thus far. I wondered with the fixative, can one use "workable" krylon or should I stick with the fine art one? Thank you, you do a wonderful job instructing.

I really love your work. So diverse and I must ask does your gorgeous dog enjoy your Studio as much as mine does? He loves sitting under my easel and listening to Classic fm.
You did a great job with the video by the way.

Hi Charles. Just found your video. Truly inspiring. I have a question: what brand and reference is the vine charcoal you used to do the value study? I ask because all my vine charcoals are grey and do not produce black. Thank you so much for sharing so much knowledge. Pedro from Portugal.

Just wondering what the name of the fixative and is it especially for pastels?
