  • This video shows how you can make a cheap soiled fuel forge without any welding and for under 60 dollars instead of the 500 dollars a new one costs on ebay. This design is made to be fuel efficient and is mainly used whit charcoal as it do not have a bottom valve to catch heavyer fuel types.

    Excellent tutorial. @11:40 you cut an octagonal shape to cut out a circle. I always knew that and used it with wood but never with metal. “Thinking Outside The Box...” thank you immensely for that, sometimes I don’t have a tool to cut a certain shape and your reminder that patience and time I could build or do anything.

    I just made this with a few exceptions. I used a bigger rotor and instead of a grate I used broken up fire bricks and I had to use some plate steel to bridge the gap between the pipe and the rotor. Just wanted to say ty for the inspiration.

      another way to improve on this is to put a T fitting in there instead of the 90, any dust and bits coming down the pipe isn't going to roll down into the hair dryer

    Nice video!! There is actually a very simple forge to make you just make two fire bricks walls and a clay/soil layer at the bottom. You then just add a blower under a wall (maybe two ag two different places for longer pieces) the problem is you can't move it...

    Okay boys and girls. Just a simple tip. Before drilling on something round. 1 secure in a vice of sorts. Mark where you wish to drill. Get a center punch and give it a whack use a small drill bit (roughly the size of your center punch diameter) to create a pilot hole before stepping up to your desired diameter.

    Nice design but you should have lowered the top to around 3/4 the way into the drum then cut out two sections of the material at the top that way you could forge larger things and put in more wood to get a higher temperature

    Just a friendly critique. The music is horrible. Forging is done with metal! And I am not technical enough, to understand exactly what it all is you're doing during the music. I think you'd be a lot better off by either talking over it after production, or just add text to explain the steps a bit more detailed. It is a guide after all. Other then that, I will try and make up something like this, since I have the barrel. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

    I built one of these years ago with a steel wheel instead of a barrel. I would love to hear if he still uses this one. Mine was quickly retired because it took forever to heat stock, and the pan was too shallow for both heating and for heating longer stocks in the middle. I did not find these furnaces very effective except for "tip work" on shorter works. For working long rebars they just dont work

    This is arguably the cheapest way to make a forge for a beginner. Most pros tend to suggest welding a bunch of steel together, but also forget that welding equipment and training to use it safely can cost several thousand dollars if you're starting from zilch.

    Ps, how could I soften my steel as I start hammer it flat, and when I'm done do I or not quench my work, when not finished???

    • @himanshuwilhelm5534
      @himanshuwilhelm5534 4 роки тому +2

      Don't quench while in the middle of working it, only after your forge work is done.
      Before you quench you need to normalize the piece to take out all of the stress that was put into it during forging. To do this, heat the blade until it is non-magnetic, then run the blade through the forge to make it have a uniform colour, then let it air cool to ambient temperatures, it is suggested to have it sitting on an insulating surface like insulated firebricks, kaowool (used to insulate gas forges) or vermiculite. Do this three times.
      This shrinks the grain structure, making your blade stronger, and less likely to break or warp when quenching it. You are free to straighten the piece if it warps between heat cycles, but be gentle and don't heat beyond non-magnetic.
      After normalizing do most of your grinding work except sharpening. If you do it after you quench it will be harder to grind Make sure that the edge is still flat and blunt, or the edge will cool too quickly.
      before you quench it in oil, preheat the oil by dipping a red hot piece of junk metal, like rebar. Cold oil isn't wet enough, and doesn't transfer heat efficiently because it the molecules don't move between each-other easily.
      Finally, to quench it, heat it to non-magnetic, run it through the forge to make the colour uniform, then dip it in.
      With water quenching, you have to stir the water to prevent steamy gas bubbles from ruining you quench.
      After quenching, you need to temper, because after the quench, the blade is very hard, and very brittle. The easiest way is to stick it in an oven at 500 and wait an hour or two.
      After that, you can sharpen, polish, and create a handle. Make sure to dip in water if you are using a sanding belt or grinding wheel after tempering. If you get it too hot (which can totally happen with power tools), you will create a soft spot. You can tell by the metal turning purple.

    Interesting video. So most of the barrel was just there to get height like a stand or table? It looks like the functional parts of your forge were made from a brake rotor, a drain grate, some plumbing, and a hair dryer. I'd have liked your video better if the beginning part was centered in the frame more. I'm so glad you improved that toward the end. B for cinematography, A for ingenuity of product.

    • @arceusmaster91
      @arceusmaster91 5 років тому +3

      Most professional firepots are cast iron. You run into issues when your firepot (whatever that may be) is deep and has steep walls, as the heat will rise into the walls, but on a shallow design like this you should be good. And if you need to raise the depth of your fire pot, you can put fire bricks next to it to make a larger coal pile.

    You are losing a RIDICULOUS amount of energy with every single swing of your hammer. At least 50% or more of your energy is being absorbed between the loose connection between your anvil and that block of wood and the gravel you have it sitting on. You should get rid of the wood and fasten that anvil to a metal base which weighs at least 10x as much as the anvil itself then place that on a solid foundation. If you have to pour yourself a small pad of concrete at least 3 foot by 3 foot by 4 inches deep. Though it would be better if you have a much larger concrete pad to put it on. If you do this you will find that you get FAR greater effect from each swing of your hammer and your projects will then take far less time and energy to form on the anvil.

      Blacksmiths have been mounting their anvils to a big heavy wooden stumps for thousands of years. Finally K162KingPin has come along and shown everyone what dumb asses that they have been all of this time. Thank you for sharing your wis-dumb with us all. Now, perhaps you can put on your thinking cap and figure out why you are wrong or you can continue believing everyone else is stupid. You could try pounding on a piece of steel sitting on concrete for 10 or 12 hours and then try it the other way and report back to the class.

    • @K162KingPin
      @K162KingPin 2 роки тому

      @@rehoboth_farm Someone else necro posted this then deleted it or I'd have never noticed this idiotic comment lmfao. Lets see... things people did for thousands of years that we now know how to and have the ability to do much better.
      1) Fastening an anvil to something better than a log.
      2) Wiping our asses, most of us dont use grass or our hand anymore. Feel free to keep doing it the way people did for thousands of years.
      3) Refrigerating and freezing food. Feel free to live in the arctic circle where it never gets below freezing or just let your food spoil every few days. That is how it was done for thousands of years
      4) Clean water. For most of human history people drank from unfiltered unsteralized ponds, wells, streams, lakes, rivers, etc. This caused all kinds of illnesses, infections, etc which were nothing less than horrible to live with and not uncommon to die from. Now we sterilize our water with chlorine, put fluoride in it to make our teeth last longer, sweetener so it doesn't taste like sewer water.
      5) Overwhelming unreasonable devotion to religion. Most people now days don't really believe in a god. Many claim they do because those around them claim they do so they want to fit in. At least in our part of the world you wont find anyone burning children alive as a sacrifice to their god, or invading other towns and cities killing men, woman, children, and even animals because they worshiped another god. Sadly this is how most of human history has been.
      Just because something was done "for thousands of years" my no means makes it better in any way. Did you consider than blacksmiths putting anvils on a log might be the reason they were so unproductive that the industrial revolution didn't happen for thousands of years? Blacksmiths have been around for as long as written history at least 7,000 years. The anvil has been around for at least 6,000 years. I bet when someone invented the anvil all the other blacksmiths where like...
      "Why don't you just beat your metal fragments against a rock? That's how everyone else has done it for hundreds of years. But I guess we needed you to come along and tell us we have been doing it wrong all this time." Then they probably found some stupid religious reason to kill him.
      Ultimately people like you have attempted to stall progress for as far back as someone else's better idea made them feel stupid. You didn't think up something better so you cling to the past like a child with its blanket. You feel safe in what you know but you are afraid at anything new and so you lash out like a child. It's pathetic and you are beneath this conversation. Grow up. Try to realize that if you are the dumbest person in the room its probably best not to open your mouth and let everyone know.

      Ricky Nelson, if the coal burn area is large, then the consumption of coal will also be large!

    So what exactly are you using the oil drum for? Its obviously NOT as the forge , the brake rotor and hair dryer are the forge. The oil drum seems to be only a table holding your forge up , which could be done by anything from a grill to any metallic table. Please make actual forge that utilizes the oil drum.

    Seems like a waste of a good barrel as you're only using the top. All those bolts seem like a waste as well. Good thing my rotor only has 4 holes and I have a spare barrel lid. :P

    Intressting but why are you and others are always removing the guard and the handle from your angle grinder?... I don't get it.... It's dangerous the sparks hit your face you easy get your hands where it hurts, cut off wheels and fingers.... Or exploing cut off wheels right in your face. I work daily in a metal shop and never ever needed to remove the guard. Hmm is it possible to do it without the pipe and stick the hair dryer directly into the oil drum, when the oil drum has no big holes it might work out the same and you can save time and money not using the pipe and maybe you can build a air regulator too.

      His DIY don't even have ash collector and pipe will be filled with ash very soon. If you connect the hairdryer directly to barrel ash and heat could damage hairdryer and the barrel will burn out very quickly because it is thin.

      That's not coal, it's lump charcoal. Smiths have been forging with charcoal for 2,000 years or more. Cleaner than coal and just as hot.
