    I bought an entire machine shop in this recession. Haven't made this much money ever in my life. American manufacturing is at an all time high right now. Just broke my first 100k this month. I've only been open now for 7 months!
    AND to top it all off I am running FADALS lmao!!!!
    Love it

    The shop I work at has 3 Mazak VCN-570c mills coming in august and im trying to convince the boss to get at least one of them fitted out with Pierson pallets. Based on the types of customers we have and how we're one of the only fully us based manufacturers in our industry (so not subject to the international shipping mess), I'm not too worried about the recession in terms my job.

    I thoroughly enjoy carrying zero debt. I'm able to focus on the important tasks and have no worries about money, other than having more would mean being able to step up my timetables. Carrying debt, while there are economic cases for it, is just not required for what I want to do. I've charted a very scalable course. I'm very fortunate to be in this position after years of uncertainty and struggle. Praise God for carrying me through.

    I've been watching you a bit lately because I am kind of taking over my schools engineering lab. You just got all of my respect in this video, when you pointed at the card and right that second it appeared at the top of the screen. Sometimes the amount of time between those two actions makes it hard to tell what the person is talking about especially if a person is talking about multiple things. Overall thanks for walking me and others through the whole prosses of what you do, you honest opinions, etc.

    I run 6 of these at my work. I thought I broke one today and was really freaking out. The machine alarmed out and I reset it and thought I unclamped the sub spindle Chuck and it didn't. Then I jogged the B axis over with a part clamped in both chucks and it snapped the steel part.

    Most of the analysis I've seen on recession issues suggests that the big challenge is coming from globalized supply chains - it's not driven by a lack of demand as much as an inability to create and sell products. That same analysis suggests that one of the big outcomes is that lots of the supply chain will be moving to north America over the next few years with the big challenge being a need to build out manufacturing capacity. I think your move to buy the machine is the right one - your business will do well as others build their capabilities.

    Yeah, elephant in the room is why you sold the haas, haha. I would have sold that thing for the noise of the spindle alone. And the new Doosan iHMI control is so sexy. Only problem is the cycle start and feed hold buttons are in each other's position! I would swap those buttons if possible.

    Hello Jay, please can you explain me why you need a 24 tool ( half ) index turret when you have a Y-axis. 😉
    Probably cost a lot more but the Y+/Y- multi ( parallel ) toolholders on a 12 station with "only" Y-axis do the same job. 🤔
    You have only 12 driven live tools just like the "normal" turret, I don't see the benefit.

    • @PiersonWorkholding
      @PiersonWorkholding  Рік тому

      Half index turrets can offer better tool clearances for OD tools. If you stick your tools out far enough you can theoretically get more clearance between the Y's ±50mm of travel. The Y axis almost makes half station turrets pointless but still has marginal utility. In short, I've never paid extra for a half station turret.

    • @ytfan3815
      @ytfan3815 Рік тому

      @@PiersonWorkholding
      Hello Jay, thanks for the reply, much appreciated, your explanation make sense but for us it works with the "normal" Y-axis.
      One of our lathes is a Haas ST25-Y (NGC) with BMT65 live tooling turret, the option for the half-index (24) would be an extra €4.695 ( $4.980 ).
      We took the option for the 6.000 rpm instead of the standard 4.000 rpm, was an extra €2.295 ( $2.435 ). 😉

  • @jonnydeen6952
    @jonnydeen6952 2 роки тому

    I would be of the opinion that you should put the wear and tear on the bar feed. They are much cheaper to replace than the lathe. And in reality they are designed and built to push bar

    • @PiersonWorkholding
      @PiersonWorkholding  2 роки тому

      No, the lathe performs no extra motion when bar pulling vs the feeder pushing. The only difference is that it runs the parting tool after pulling vs right before. Plus, it is a shorter cycle time to pull bars.

    A recession seems like a better time to buy a used machine. This industry is full of failed small businesses who drowned in debt. That means tons of used machines are available.
    or... God forbid... learning how to retrofit an old one yourself with modern electronics and faster spindles etc.
    Always good to put ego aside and distinguish between a nice to have vs what is actually needed to get the job done efficiently.

    Why you dont buy a German machine? A Hermle or DMG? Are these Doosan so much cheaper? When I see the quality, design and the overall of the US and Asian machines, I am always wondering.... I mean when I only see the control unit, oh lord... and you didn't know Iemca? You REALLY should watch out more to European machines. For example they made a soecific loader for a DMG

      It's too broad of a question to answer why I didn't buy a specific brand or genre of machine. Doosan produces great machines with very competitive pricing. There's always going to be a better machine out there somewhere. Buying the best isn't necessarily the best business decision when growing a company. I'd rather have 3 great machines than 2 "best" machines.
