  • Olympus XZ-1 Manual - www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_file...
    Jpeg settings as gleaned from a 2012 discussion on DP Review:
    On the screen menu that you see after pressing the back OK button --
    1. Select Auto-ISO. The XZ-1 will try really, really hard not to go over ISO 200 -- and that extra stop, from, say ISO 100 to 200, will give you super low-light pictures, with a camera-set shutter speed fast enough to handhold.
    2. Next, going down the menu, select 1 Vivid. Then press the little Menu button on the back. Go to Picture Mode, select Vivid. Press the right arrow key, and set Contrast to +1, Sharpness 0, Saturation +1, Gradation - Normal. Important: do NOT set Gradation to Auto, or some other stuff will stop working.
    3. Next, select white balance - Underwater (the fish icon). On the back-button Menu, go to WB, press the OK button to select the fish icon, then press the right-arrow. Leave A (amber) at 0, in the middle... but set G (green) to -1.
    Between this and the Vivid setting above, you'll get beautiful pictures, indoor and out, daytime, twilight, and in the dark.
    4. Further down, select 'LF + Raw' as your picture type. This will make both a JPG and a RAW image. In most instances, the JPG will be great... but the RAW backup lets you rescue any image where the JPG isn't good.
    5. Further down, select Spot Focus, instead of ESP or Ctr-Weighted. After selecting spot, go out of the menu. Then, press the left-arrow key and make sure the green focus square is in the center of the screen.
    6. Lastly, further down, select AF instead of Macro or Super-Macro. At the camera's startup wide-angle lens setting, everything's sharp from about 2' to infinity -- like for almost every photo you will take. But play around with Super-Macro... fantastic closeups. Just don't forget to put it back on AF!
    Before you go, get two SD cards, and three spare batteries. You will get about 200 -250 pictures per battery charge... so three charged batteries should be all you need, who knows what kind of electricity they have over there. You can carry the XZ-1 in a shirt pocket, with a spare battery in your other shirt pocket.
    Night photography -- if you're on the move, forget the tripod or monopod. Learn to balance the camera on a fence, a railing, or braced against a pole. Or, carry a small beanbag in your pants pocket. Use the camera's 12-sec self-timer to take a good sharp picture of anything that isn't moving too much.
    Sunset -- point the spot focus to the sky at the left or right of the setting sun; watch the LCD screen til you see the effect you like.
    Water reflections -- spot focus off the reflection in the water, not the sky.
    Portraits -- here's an exception to Program mode. Go to A Aperture instead. Turn the lens ring til it says 1.8 Put the lens at full telephoto. Stand about 6 feet away from the subject. The background behind the person should be nicely blurred. Now, if you are doing this in bright daylight, there may be too much light for the XZ-1 to handle. So go into the OK button menu, and change ND Off to on. The built-in Neutral Density filter lets you take pictures at wide open lens settings in bright daylight.

    Fantastic review! I've been eyeing the ZX-1 for a while and the prices have gone up a bit and I'm just not willing to spend more then $100-$120! I don't know why it's gone up in prices recently but I suspect because DPReview and Peter Forsgård has had it on their channels! Another thing I want to say thank you for is the time you took to place details in the body description of your video! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Another fantastic review! If you're watching this video and reading this comment! READ THE BODY DESCRIPTION! Super handy!

    I love this! I just watched this video and a couple others about the XZ-1 including DPReview, and I just started using my old XZ-1 again. I got it new back in 2011! I had written this camera off but now looking back at old pictures, it holds up very well even against my current cameras. One note on the battery/date issue - it's not a problem on mine when changing batteries, and the manual says you only have to reset the date if you remove the battery for about "a day". A quick battery swap won't reset it unless your camera has some other hardware issue. Thanks for the video and for encouraging me not to give up on my old gear!

    I came across you're channel looking for a daily driver CCD camera that will fit in a pocket or small bag, am subscribed for a week now and totally addicted to CCD cams haha. What a great channel and thanks for your review on this cam. Along with a number of other reviews I decided to pick one up locally for a good price and totally do not regret my decision. What a fantastic camera! The lens is awesome, the body feels premium and my white/black copy just looks amazing, it's a joy to use it every time! Best thing is, I noticed some green, red and blue pixels on pictures and was a little disappointed thinking I have pixel errors. But I found the pixel correction tool in the menu and it erased all spots. I'm in love again :D
    I can totally relate why you love this cam! Please keep up the great work, I love your unpretentious yet sophisticated way of presenting those little gems, which makes it even more enjoyable to watch.

    Thank you for this very straightforward and fair review. I have had the xz-1 for some time, and still shoot it occasionally. I added three accessories: the VF-2 EVF, the largest Flipbak grip, and a clamshell lens cap, all of which make the camera eminently more useable. Two observations: you are correct that the camera software is programmed to keep the ISO as low as possible, so you have to be mindful of that when shooting in P, S, or A priority and adjust if/as needed. Second, due to the small sensor size, my personal ISO threshold is 400; the image definitely starts to break down at 800, which is still quite usable. These are not criticisms; any and every camera has its limitations. But if you stay within those limits (or whatever your personal tolerances are), the xz-1 is still capable of great images, even in 2022. Thanks for a great review.

    What a coincidence - I just lost an eBay auction for an XZ-1! I had hopes because the price was still within a reasonable range, until things got out of hand in the last 2 minutes. There aren't many XZ-1 on eBay lately, and most sellers are asking unreal prices for this camera. Not that it isn't good, but 350 euros for an 11-year-old compact camera is a tad insane.

    thank you for this review !... just bought this yesterday(4/2/2023) and was extremely lucky to find it for 60USD(250myr in my country)... I think the price surge is not only by the camera youtube channel but also the recent DIGICAM/CCD wave/trend overall... new gen/gen z likes to be "new", hence the HDR and sharp look of a new iphone or samsung is not sought after anymore in the new gen space... even if you look into the music video style of the new gen they prefer something that doesnt look like it was made with a lot of production... at first I wanted to find the CCD cameras with dirt small MP from pre 2008 but after seeing the XZ-1 I see its totally possible to have that look with a slightly modern body.... I have to admit I was hit by the trend too lol but I realize I need to make my purchase actually useful... those older CCD camera are a pain in functionality and not that fast... this XZ-1 , with some skills and willingful client you can probably get away with pre wedding session lol

    You pronounced Zuiko perfectly! Though I am sad to say that it's just marketing hype: the exact same lens is also on the Pentax MX-1 as "Pentax SMC lens" and the Casio EX-10 as a "Casio Exilim 28mm wide optical 4x." The entire camera, along with the lens, was likely made by Sanyo, or possibly the lens and sensor module could be from another OEM manufacturer like Tamron.

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  2 роки тому

      Oh wow that is fascinating! I love learning about these nuances like how the LX and Leica Digilux lines were basically the same. I e heard wonderful things about the MX-1 but the Casio body is news to me. Thanks for sharing!

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways 2 роки тому +2

      @@OneMonthTwoCameras the MX-1 and EX-10 both have the same CMOS sensor as the XZ-2, so they're close to that camera than the XZ-1, but all the exact same lens. That CMOS sensor was also used in the Olympus Stylus 1, and there is a Casio twin of it called the EX-100.
      You'll see it a lot in compact cameras: Olympus and Canon using the same lens and sensor, then on a different model Panasonic, Sony, Casio, and Panasonic all using the same lens and sensor, putting Carl Zeiss and Leica branding on them when they're all likely made by Sanyo. If you look at the bodies, you'll sometimes see they all have the exact same placement of buttons, viewfinder, flash, etc... even though the styling is slightly different, the core design is identical.
      Usually a good giveaway is a camera labelled as being manufactured in a country where the company selling it (e.g. Nikon) doesn't have a factory, but Sanyo or someone else does.

      @@StephenStrangways It is very sad that Casio pulled out of digital camera industry. My first two cameras were CASIO. Brutally fast AF and overall response, zero shutter lag, way ahead in these parameters when QV-R40 was compared to almost anything else in 2004.
      These XZ-2 and Sytlus1s based CASIO versions unfortunately do not have hot-shoe and EX-100 does not have the cute EVF like Stylus1/1s has. And those CASIOs were not even distrubuted outside of Japan much.
      Pentax MX-1 "clone" of XZ-2 is also missing flash hot-shoe. Which is quite sad, because external flash can do almost a miracle with these hi-end compact cameras in case they are used inside. Bounced flash + fast lens + low ISO + RAW = very nice pics. Even if some cheap old manual or light-adjusted semiauto flash is used. I took several thousand product pictures at work with XZ-1 using just bounced flash and keeping camera in ISO100-200 range with F2.8-4 apertures. Many of those pics ended up in various manuals, lab reports, marketing materials and work instructions :D There was no need to bring my DSLR for that task. That small mighty Olympus was enough.
      Nice addition is filter adaptor with 52mm thread. Then various filters and loupes can be attached. And this tube is also fully compatible with XZ-2.

    • @StephenStrangways
      @StephenStrangways 2 роки тому

      @@xmeda Casio was using the same sensors as everyone else, but they were the only ones implementing the high-speed video modes they were capable of, which made them very unique. They also made a camera with a 1/1.7" BSI CMOS and a 19-95mm equivalent lens, something I love the idea of, but it was yet another camera not released in North America so it's quite rare. I do agree that the flash shoe on the XZ-1 and XZ-2, and that as well as the EVF on the Stylus 1, do make those cameras the best of the Olympus/Pentax/Casio siblings. I'd still snag the Casio cameras if I found them for a good price, just for fun!
