Had one in the uk, similar to yours but in blue. Picked it up yesterday, no waiting time, dealer had two cars arriving. Pleased with it, the efficiency is great.
What do you think of the blue - I want to go for it in blue but nervous - looks good in some videos and pics and then looks either too much or too weak in others. Local dealer only has one car (in white) so it's a bit of a punt on other colours
I took one of these for a test drive yesterday having never driven an EV before (I currently drive a Seat Leon Cupra 300) and I found myself very impressed. Comfortable and quiet, handles really well and a decent turn of pace too. Definitely have gone from "curious" to "seriously considering" hahaha
Reviewer deserves a Guinness for reviewing the basic model. So many reviewers review a 25,000 car in a 38,000 model with all the bells and whistles. Not what most people will buy.
Worth noting: The short (standard) range version uses an LFP battery which is safer, cheaper, better for the environment - and can be charged to 100% on the regular with very little degradation over the years. Also, it was designed so that the battery can be relatively easily replaced. Something that I see as future-proofing since you could theoretically replace it with a totally new battery tech in the future, if one becomes available.
The variation regarding type of battery is absolutely worth mentioning cause it simply is the most important part of an EV. And after having watched a lot of MG4-reviews I really wonder why nobody emphasizes that.
@@gilleek2 The long range is Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) Lithium Ion chemistry. When compared with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) its principal benefits are greater energy density and, allegedly, better performance in extreme cold. I bought the MG4 SE SR because I don't need the increased range. The LFP batteries are more ethical because they don't contain Cobalt.
@@sailingoctopus1 does the lack of pre conditioning of the battery make it less efficient than the long range variant? I assume extreme cold is a lot colder than Irish winter thus not terribly relevant to us?
I've a megane e tech bought to dip my toe into ev's & I love the electric driving.I can't get my head around that MG, so much better looking & upmarket than their previous cars!! And THAT PRICE!!?? 🤔🤔
At last. An EV that normal working people can afford. It’s just a shame there’s such a car shortage at the moment with anything that’s going on in the world. MG are on a winner with the MG4 it’s just a shame it’s going yo be impossible to buy one. Thanks for a great review as always.
I have a standard range SE on order, hopefully for delivery before the year is out. I believe the standard range battery is LFP chemistry. No one talks about this battery that is also found in the Tesla 3 standard range. It takes twice as many charge/discharge cycles as the usual NCM batteries in its life time, is less of a fire hazard and generally a lot more durable. Great reviews by the way, many thanks.
Standard Range 51 kWh is LFP, the 64 kWh battery is conventional Li-Ion. Standard Range can only be loaded AC with 1 phase., in Germany this is only 3,5 kW. The 64 kWh battery can load AC 3-phase. LFP has advantages, but less Winter suitabiliy. I live in southern Bavaria and I have ordered the 64 kWh battery. I will be able to load with 11 kW at home.
@@martinv.352 Thanks for the information Martin, I didn't realise that the long range battery came with a 11 kW charger. I only have single phase power at home and the winters are milder here so I am happy with the standard range battery. It will be interesting to see how the two battery types compare over the coming years. Regards John.
Brilliant to see a review of a non top spec option. Im sick of seeing reviews of EVs only in the top spec press release versions that the Joe soaps cant afford.Great stuff.
I bought one last month and did nearly 2k miles already. Great car and amazing value for money 💰I actually made a few videos what I like and dislike about the MG4
Was tempted to place an order based on the UK reviews but wanted to see what you said about it. Placed an order for the same car you tested the day after your review. Always great quality reviews.
Always enjoy your reviews Nobby. Literally just this last week I placed an order for a Trophy with 16 week delivery. Like you and many other car reviewers I was totally knocked out by the test drive. Smooth acceleration, excellent handling and certainly quick enough (bearing in mind I can compare my present car which is an Audi S3). Many say the interior quality is poor but yet again I felt it was perfectly adequate bearing in mind the extremely good value purchase price. My only concern now is a few reports are coming in from new owners about oil leaks and warped under trays. Some garages are suggesting the oil leak it is due to overfill. I really hope this is the case and if not that they will issue a recall and get it all sorted before I get mine. I would be sad to have to cancel my order.
Cheers! Glad you reviewed the base version. It's actually the fastest one (less weight). Only thing I'd miss is the reversing camera. The LR is probably going to be the most popular.
A very honest, real-world review of a car that’s obviously going to win a lot of friends and buyers quickly! I’d take this over an ID3 and a few others, for sure; still prefer the Niro - but that’s just my opinion of course. Most buyers will go for this MG4 at potentially £7.5k or more cheaper than the Kia. And THAT’s one of the few key things that the EV market was crying out for!
Great review as always Nobby I have a deposit on this car which will be my first ever brand new not to mention electric car I’ve purchased. So I’m really excited now given your honest praise and feedback on it. It’s getting rave reviews all over you tube. Can’t wait to test drive it 😀
Gorgeous. When I first saw it I thought this is going to be one to watch and once I heard the price I thought this is a winner and going to be a game changer. I’m glad you reviewed the basic car because it just shows you what you can get for the money. This is the car that the id3 should have been but isn’t. As a brand I never thought much of them….cheap and nasty but this car will turn heads and with that 7 year warranty they really have a winner. The only thing I really don’t like is that black interior especially the roof interior (so many cars have that and really don’t like that it makes the cars look so small and claustrophobic). It’s a good looking car. Hopefully other manufacturers will lower their prices. If this is what is possible at the price being sold for. Just shows it can be done.
Does the exclusive come with the electric sunroof? Is the electric sunroof no longer available un Ireland on MG ZS Long Range? Id still prefer the ZS. but what a price? Stopof it doesnt have wireless charging and Apple car Play and Android Auto connection. Great video agaun Mr Noble:-)
Nice review, can’t say I’m that impressed with the looks , sat in one few weeks ago and it was dark and gloomy with no option of a sunroof , needs bigger wheels as well , but for the money , if your not a badge snob it represents great value .
Nice! Looks like what a more attractive Nissan Leaf coulda been! Is there an MG service network in Ireland? I don’t imagine it’ll ever set foot(?) in Canada… Where we have similar multi surface roadways as you have there! 😝
Actually i’ve got my volcano 30november and I am happy driver every single day.Love this car.I had in the past MG5 ev that was also very good car I’ve done two long range trips From UK to Ukraine border (twice 4500miles)with no any probs.
I assume you are an independent reviewer? If so, I noticed you didn’t mention the lack of a rear wiper. With Irish weather? Also, there are reports here in the UK of an oil leak. Has this not raised its head in Ireland? Thanks for the review.
The test cars have only just come into the country and, from what I see, they're UK-reg imports. No customers here have cars yet and won't do until year-end/2023
I had the car for an hour, rear wiper didn't feature. Ioniq 5 doesn't have one either or EV6 for example, doesn't seem to be stopping people buying them. I'm not going to start talking about oil leaks based on internet rumours, if it transpires that it's an issue, I'll mention it in the next review when I've more time with the car.
UK Homes only have 7kwH Electric, you would need 3 phase supply to get faster - one of the great EV cons - Europe has 3 phase and can charge at 21 kwH's.
21kWh per 100 miles/2.1kWh for ten miles then? That’s a meagre 210 Watts per mile, which is very very good. Not an average of course, which so far has the Model 3 up at 250Wh per mile, which is about the best sort of figure I have heard. Some others are in that ball park, and big SUV types are up at a third of a kWh per mile or even more depending on circumstances. Anyway, thanks for this, once I turn my house into a power station I will look at EVs seriously. Take care all.
Great review as always, great comments from owners regarding the battery options below, there is so much to take into consideration but the price is unbelievable (normal). I watched a similar MG review which advised that the battery should be charged to 80% and not 100%, it also recommended that the battery should not be discharged below 20% and ideally maintained above 50%, this really reduces the stated range... Any advice or is this different battery technology.
Maintained above 50% is a new one on me. I’m really not sure if home charging as often as you need 100% is a problem to be honest. The cheapest model battery is even more robust for it apparently.
I think that relates to storing the car, several weeks to months. Other than that, charge and discharge as you like. The BMS has a built buffer to try and prevent going all the way to zero or 100%.
Beware the Excite model only comes with a 0:220:29 1phase charger, meaning unless your workplace has a CCS supercharger it will take you 10hrs to go from 10 to 80%
Funny, like the orange but unlikely to plump for Exclusive/Trophy spec. The blue doesn't look bad and comes at no extra cost afaik but, due to it being "flat", I'm wondering will it become meh over time. The grey looks nice but there are sooo many grey cars out there that the red started to look intriguing .. not quite Mazda Soul Crystal but not far off it either. Hmmm 1st world problems 😉
I understand you only got maybe a few hours with the car. But, the facts that you got wrong are proof that you did little to no research on the car beforehand. Maybe try and make voice-overs with B-roll and talk through the specs correctly while putting in the driving impressions with A-roll footage. It would greatly improve your production and let the viewers decide on the look and feel while you shower them with specs. Heatpump info, no alloy wheels and the placement of the daytime running lights are details that shouldn't be missed.

Is there anyone here in Ireland with MG4 long range/ high trim who could confirm that 7kW charger? According to MG UK and Ireland are only getting 7 in all versions, but I've seen number of people in UK stating that long range/ trophy is charging at 10kW from AC which is clearly showing 11kW onboard charger even MG doesn't know about 😅
Lots of bad points, no one pedal driving, no air vents and only one usb and no interior lights in back seats, no arm rest and cup holders in rear seats, no light on vanity mirror , no front trunk, cup holders in front are positioned under gear shifter which makes it hard to get drinks out easily. No spare tyre, no heads up display and no elec seats So many things that should have not been forgotten
There is a rear USB port. No spare tyre in many cars today. Electric drivers seat available on highest spec if required. Possibly not a car that would suit everyone though - more for those seeking the essentials at a value price rather than many of the things one can live without. Not perfect, I'll admit, but very impressive value
@@NobbyOnCars that’s false , most new cars these days have all of these. I haven’t mentioned anything that isn’t a standard item on most cars . Not sure what cars you have seen lately but I suggest you do your research before commenting further
Also there are alloys under the plastic covers. Most EVs have plastic covers for airflow and increased range. You can remove them, but will likely lose 10/15 miles of estimated range.
@@corglass It’s not gonna change the history of Ireland 🇮🇪 But Koreans better watch out for the Chinese. People want to buy affordable cars. Kia Niro EV used to be affordable, not so much anymore.
it doesn't matter how good the car is ' as you say ' because the fuel cost is more than ice now on runs. Shell recharge is now 85p per kwhr, that equates to about 21 p per mile, 5p per mile more than my large diesel car. Then there is the range and charging time. No not worth the hassle as your only car because you will have to spend hours charging, slow long distance journey times, more expensive to run long distance and more expensive to buy, so why would you. There is no advantage now buying an electric car at all, unless you are a polar bear hugger.
This car is cheaper than similar petrol cars to buy. You can charge a car for €0.09 per kWh, public chargers are rarely used by EV drivers. The odd time on longer journeys is about the size of it. By all means keep your diesel though, I don’t think electric or any one form of fuel is the solution to be honest.
I run my Cupra Born for approx €20 per month with home charging, I was spending upwards of €60 per week on petrol for the same mileage in previous car, 2019 Seat Leon. Of course its going to be expensive if you depend on fast chargers all the time.

Leaking rear diff on many, initially believed to be simply over filled at the factory, but it looks like this isn't the case.
Still interested but I'll give it some breathing space to see how the issues unfold and are dealt with
Does this entry model have keyless entry and auto wipers?
Watching the review now love the style love the humour wonder why it has a UK Reg in Eire ? Mind you most new UK reviews have German regs ! Presume the car was sent up in mph and m/kwh ? 4 seems low - but the car is definitely the best value car to come along since the VW Yorkshire ( eUP! )
Does the acc finally use regen?
Yes absolutely 👍
@@r33gts thanks for letting me know
It’s a good looking car.
No sunroof on any of the models, the black that you see is the black roof on the Exclusive/Trophy models
Hope they've updated the software mg piolet is dangerous 😢
Nice review, can’t say I’m that impressed with the looks , sat in one few weeks ago and it was dark and gloomy with no option of a sunroof , needs bigger wheels as well , but for the money , if your not a badge snob it represents great value .
Quite dark inside alright
Nice! Looks like what a more attractive Nissan Leaf coulda been!
Is there an MG service network in Ireland?
I don’t imagine it’ll ever set foot(?) in Canada…
Where we have similar multi surface roadways as you have there! 😝
6 dealers currently
Great shoe-car coordination
☺️
very impressive
I will get my MG4 trophy volcano orange next monnth, can't wait.
Nice colour
Congratulations
3 phase on street chargers all over Ireland
Game. Changer.
Come on Nobby, don't be coy, do you like it? 😂😂
Nice review it will sell like hotcakes.
I really enjoy your vehicle reviews nobby.👍
pity they dont give you a granny cable also, that would suit me moreso than the one you get.
@@NobbyOnCarsMy thoughts were that if you cannot go below 20% and above 80% then that limits you to 60% window of usable battery and range?
I think that relates to storing the car, several weeks to months.
Other than that, charge and discharge as you like.
The BMS has a built buffer to try and prevent going all the way to zero or 100%.
And it looks good.
Good review 👍
Thanks
Beware the Excite model only comes with a 0:22 0:29 1phase charger, meaning unless your workplace has a CCS supercharger it will take you 10hrs to go from 10 to 80%
Dealership won’t tell you
Having seen some in the flesh, Mark, what colours do you think look best - answer obviously subjective but interested all the same
Black orange and blue all looked good to me in the flesh
Funny, like the orange but unlikely to plump for Exclusive/Trophy spec. The blue doesn't look bad and comes at no extra cost afaik but, due to it being "flat", I'm wondering will it become meh over time. The grey looks nice but there are sooo many grey cars out there that the red started to look intriguing .. not quite Mazda Soul Crystal but not far off it either. Hmmm 1st world problems 😉
Thanks Nobby! Does it come with that type 2 cable, any idea of length?
Also how did you find the seats. I’ve seen some reviews saying they’re a little under padded and may not be good long term?
2.5 metres
I understand you only got maybe a few hours with the car. But, the facts that you got wrong are proof that you did little to no research on the car beforehand.
Maybe try and make voice-overs with B-roll and talk through the specs correctly while putting in the driving impressions with A-roll footage. It would greatly improve your production and let the viewers decide on the look and feel while you shower them with specs.
Heatpump info, no alloy wheels and the placement of the daytime running lights are details that shouldn't be missed.
No roof bars allowed :(
Taxi?
I think so. Similar size to a Leaf.
At 8:30 into the video the auto generated text read and I quote: "it handles bombs really well". And they say artificial intelligence is the future, god help us !!
🤣
What’s with the dog walker? Who’s wandering .8m out from the kerb and allowing his dog to be another metre into the road. Cares enough to walk the dog but not enough to protect it.
Is there anyone here in Ireland with MG4 long range/ high trim who could confirm that 7kW charger? According to MG UK and Ireland are only getting 7 in all versions, but I've seen number of people in UK stating that long range/ trophy is charging at 10kW from AC which is clearly showing 11kW onboard charger even MG doesn't know about 😅
Do they throw a wall box in for free ? Or is this another £2-£3 k I need to find ontop of
€600 in Ireland not sure about UK
3 people in the back only 2 headrests
Nobby, good video 👍
Thanks
No heat pump, prefer the MG MARVEL R, better range and better looking.
The worst thing about it seems to be the badge on the front. “Morris Garages” isn’t a winner.
Anyone called Morris probably loves it.
Retro is cool
Lots of bad points, no one pedal driving, no air vents and only one usb and no interior lights in back seats, no arm rest and cup holders in rear seats, no light on vanity mirror , no front trunk, cup holders in front are positioned under gear shifter which makes it hard to get drinks out easily. No spare tyre, no heads up display and no elec seats
So many things that should have not been forgotten
It’s €27,000
@@NobbyOnCars we know the price, no excuse to have left out some very standard features
There is a rear USB port. No spare tyre in many cars today. Electric drivers seat available on highest spec if required. Possibly not a car that would suit everyone though - more for those seeking the essentials at a value price rather than many of the things one can live without. Not perfect, I'll admit, but very impressive value
@@wcrash9361 there’s no car at that price that has most of what you mention though?
@@NobbyOnCars that’s false , most new cars these days have all of these. I haven’t mentioned anything that isn’t a standard item on most cars . Not sure what cars you have seen lately but I suggest you do your research before commenting further
- Plastic wheels and 6,6 kW charging.
- No thanks! 👎
Fair enough but there's clearly plenty of people who will love this. 6kw is plenty fast for most users as most charging is done at home
Also there are alloys under the plastic covers. Most EVs have plastic covers for airflow and increased range. You can remove them, but will likely lose 10/15 miles of estimated range.
@@corglass It’s not gonna change the history of Ireland 🇮🇪
But Koreans better watch out for the Chinese. People want to buy affordable cars. Kia Niro EV used to be affordable, not so much anymore.
@@dutchypiang No I do not believe that most EV’s have removable plastic covers for the wheels.
Built by Uyghur’s to keep price low.
Doubt they have the skill yet. Its not picking cotton. But of course they will learn and hopefully MG can start making them in Xinjiang soon.
it doesn't matter how good the car is
' as you say ' because the fuel cost is more than ice now on runs.
I love the ev haters ignorance. 😊
I’m not paying £30k for a plastic car
Ugliest car ever :(
I have the SE. Standard range, it is brilliant.
This so called 'MG' is a low quality 100% CHINESE product that may look great on paper and ok in the flesh when new, but we all know every metal bolt and electrical connector is MADE IN CHINA and will struggle to last 18 months without failure.
False economy to by cheap Chinese products.
Let me guess, you voted to leave?! 🤣
@@NobbyOnCars I remember people in the 70/80's going on about "Jap Crap". Wouldn't cross the road to piss on a Toyota or Honda - they wanted a lovely dependable British Austin, comfy french Talbot or Stylish Italian Lancia. The Chinese are now in that same position.
What a clown 🙄🙄🙄
Toptastic copy paste to every MG4 review. I assume you have some sort of a problem and your comment has no value.
@@kamil6024 MG was a British company with history, producing vehicles in the UK.. this Chinese company, simply purchased the MG name, no part of these vehicles is made in the UK.
Why do all or most promoters hide, or conveniently neglect to inform the buying public !!!
RWD not interested
Your complete focus on purchase cost is just sad. Any idiot can do the simple math of total cost of ownership and for simply the massive depreciation for cheap Chinese evs makes it more expensive than quality built cars
Seriously, go and vent elsewhere. For Irish prices it is phenomenal value and I’m not going to apologise to you or anyone else for knowing my audience
Cpt Obvious.... Alcohol?
In the UK retained value %after three years is predicted to be as good as a Porsche Taycan. Figure that out .
My cheap Chinese MG ZS has lost £600 in 3 years of ownership. I'm very happy with that 🙂
@@highheels200 You certainly couldn't hire a car for 3 years at a cost of £6k......
Chinese crud.
What is wrong with "scratchy plastic"?
Jasus it’s a turd ! Sorry All it’s a Chinese knockoff of a knockoff.
But its definitely better than the original.
The Chinese did an excellent job, their knockoff is better than anything out there with this price level. Will buy this for my son.
