They have me replace brass bushings in the center with ball bearings because guys can't remember to keep the machines greased. I would love to build something like this!

Thanks Ron. If you go to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, you can see the original Quadricycle built by Ford himself. Mine is laid up right now. I took my grand daughter for a ride around the neighborhood the other day and just as we turned back into my driveway, the steering link that connects the tiller to the center bell crank broke and the right front wheel got into the leaf spring. It bent a couple spokes and broke one, but the worst damage is a bent rim. I'm going to the bike shop today to see what that'll cost me.
That looks like the "improved" model. I heard that the original quadracycle didn't have brakes. Henry Ford stopped it by putting his foot against the tire. Beautiful job on your build.
That's true. I wanted something a little more controllable, but I didn't want to modify the car by putting a foot pedal in it like one of the replicas at Greenfield Village. So I came up with simply using the idler pulley on the left side to tighten a piece of leather belt around the drive shaft pulley. It works like a charm with no modifications to the original design.
There isn't a lot to go on, because there aren't many if these and very few as accurately built as this one. I do know a guy in Malta that built one, and it looked beautiful. I never saw it in person, so I can't comment on how much detail he put into it. Anyway, he tried and tried to get it running and failed. The engine never ran. He sold it to a museum for $25K. Mine runs and drives so......
Where did you find the blueprints for that engine? Might want to build one some day when I'm older and have more time. (Its hard to have time since I'm a college student).
They all came from Amazon. They're Boston gear brand. The side gears have the hubs turned to a smaller diameter, the gear itself is turned thinner, and the OD was slightly reduced. The pinions had a hub that I removed. I used a steel sprocket sandwiched between two .250 thick aluminum plates. It's supposed to have a skip-tooth chain and sprockets, but I couldn't find those items.
I'm in the process of building one now. Starting with the biggest part (flywheel) first and then moving on to trying to find all the gears and sprockets next.

I paid close attention to every little detail, but when it came to the flywheel, I used aluminum. It just seemed like a steel 200 pound flywheel was overkill, and unnecessarily stressed the rest of the car. It's around 50 pounds. I'll have to look for those part numbers for you.
Did you make improvements to the engine to make it work better and more dependably than the original? If so, can you share what you changed? Did you do something to help keep the engine cool as it is my understanding that the original ran very hot. Are those glass balls oilers or part of a fuel dripping system? Do you have plans for the improved engine design available? A website? Congratulations on your build. Thank you for sharing it with us.
The engine is identical to the original with one small exception. My fuel delivery system has a throttle to control engine speed. Henry's was a one speed engine.

These should never have been removed by taking control of all travel. The mississippi river is a mile wide in some places and road's , especially highways should have lanes to accommodate EVERY mode of transportation, it's rediculos how much we have missed out on by the automobile industry dominating all of the travel. These simple car's should have been like the horse and carriage, the families kept them and maintained them and passed them on for generations. The people are essentially locked up in cities. Thank God for the coming Judgement.

Update. They saved the rim. Just had to replace two spokes and true it up. Hollywood Bicycles in Cape Coral had it ready in two hours. Nice work!
Hard to imagine that you could fix a car with parts for a bicycle, but then again, the first airplane was built by guys who made bikes.

Did Ford have power tools to build all these parts? Or did he machine them somehow with manual tools?
I'm not sure what he had, but he was working at an Edison power plant at the time, so he probably had access to a machine shop.

No, it's a two cylinder, four stroke normal engine. Just very primitive as far as engines go.
The valve gear is anything but primitive. Hard to imagine Henry was just a 'farm boy'.
Some people are natural mechanics.
But if I remember correctly, he did have an engineering degree.

You push the lever forward which tightens a belt around the pulley under the seat. It works pretty well without modifying the original design.
