Curse of strahd was my first campaign I joined near the end and by then everyone else had screwed everything up so badly, they somehow beat strahd who was still regenerating, one of the minor villains in the town around castle ravenloft had taken over because the lord was killed and they turned everyone into vampires and ever single place except for one small village to my knowledge was basically in ruin especially after we accidentally set fire to the forest, so yea fun times. I think the funniest part was that the party were mostly not murder hobos.

    New artifact created.
    Yirbel's Drum
In possession, provides a constant inspiration spell and +2 on all saving throws for the whole party.
When played by a bard and faced by insurmountable odds (at the discretion of the DM), the drum summons an avenging spirit (NPC controlled by the DM) to stand and fight along side the party (Max of 5 rounds). If the avenging spirit's time is maxed out and forced to quit the fight, it explodes with a wave of healing that washes over the party. All party members receive 2d10 HP/ character level, and return to the fray.

This is a heavily modified CoS campaign and the group has been doing a fantastic job of chipping away at Strahd's allies and becoming powerful enough to one day face of against He Who is Ancient and the Land. Barovia is a land of zero sums and pyrrhic victories and I make absolutely sure the player are not railroaded into making impossible choices so that their victories feel real and earned. Testing their morals and convictions is pretty much par for the course. Thanks for the beautiful narration of this tragic but memorable moment. We humans like to think we're so noble, but I can say from certain experiences in my own life, both in game and out, there are some questions you can't honestly answer until you're standing there, staring it down for real.
SO... in-game... Any decent PC of mine would casually toss his or her life aside for the salvation of even two others... especially two innocents. A life for a life is where it gets dicey.
Any villainous SoB's I've concocted are by their nature ego-centric SoB's... AND wouldn't toss a life to save anyone without some contingent strings attached...
AND having never been faced with sacrifice on such a scale personally... I can only say I've risked it... but never tossed it. It's a decision I wouldn't wish on anyone... torture or pain or not.
It's also worth pointing out that THIS is a GM with "juice"... That's not all together an easy commodity to find, either. It's not just a matter of knowing how to stick it in and break off the blade. Anyone can know or learn that. The trick to being a GM with juice is taking the risk of the whole Table turning on you to truly Role Play it... To follow through with sticking it in there and breaking it off.
As storytellers and artists we ALL have to take those risks to have "juice". If you never risk someone absolutely HATING the work in part or whole, you can't get the chance of anyone truly LOVING it either. That's what juice is... This was/is/and will be a good game... AND it's the GM's juice that lends the Players and by rote their PC's the chance at becoming more than sheets of paper... checkered over with numbers and stat's to determine odds and evens at a glorified dice rolling competition... They grow up through it all to become friends, not so very different than real people we learn to know just that well... AND when (not if) they go away... whatever that narrative is, they are mourned and missed...

Little guy helped me break a curse on me and started me on a path of light that’s turned into some great role play. He was my barbarians only real friend at the time. This reminds me of our last plight. It was a beautiful bitter sweet story. In our homebrew campaign, the archdevil Zariel set up a plan to turn the material plane into the next level of the 9 hells and our party and a small troop of warriors were the only ones left to stop her. We had heard about her plans from a mortal clone of Mask, the god of deception. Mask lost her divinity to Zariel and regained her mortal thoughts and emotions. Masks mortal name was Shay. Shay explained to us that we were really the only capable fighters left to stop Zariel and repair the divine gate, which had been destroyed by Mask during the fall of the mortal plane. We also had to remove a mystical veil that was keeping the gods from being able to impact the mortal plane.
Long story short we found out that in order to repair the divine gate, and remove the veil we had to remove Masks divinity from Zariel. Either we had to convince Zariel to remove the divinity willingly from herself or kill her and someone had to be by her to take it the moment she died. The problem was, whoever took it would eventually fall pray to the madness that consumes Mask and they would eventually repeat the cycle that Zariel started. So whoever took it would have to repair the divine gate, remove the veil, and then die. The only person who could take it and have the willpower to withstand Zariel's influence was our Dragonborn Cleric. The character was a thick headed smart ass with a heart of gold. He had personally revived every member of our party (except the only two who didn't die) at least once, and constantly got into heartfelt dialogue with the party. He often felt like our glue and It really stung as players and as PC's to know that if we couldn't convince Zariel to give up her divinity, our cleric would have to die. So we derailed the campaign and tried every angle to find another way. We discovered a sentient sword that would turn anyone who attuned to it into an angel, and determined that we would convince Zariel to take it, and then channel her divinity to do good after she shifted into an angel.
Fast forward to the Zariel fight, a 6 hour real time combat ensues. We fought hard and long, all of our resources were spent, we tried numerous times to convince her to claim the sword and become a being of good. Everytime we rolled nat 1's on our persuasion checks and Zariel would have none of what we had to say. In the end, our Dragonborn did what he said he would do, and struck the last blow to take claim to the divinity. Many tears were shed after he made multiple sacrifices to revive our fallen PC's family members, and restored the world to it's proper place. He had a heartfelt speech for each of us and brought all of us and our PC's to tears before he plunged his own sword into his heart and stopped the vicious cycle that mask Zariel had started.

my first dnd group i played a tiefling bard. we set out on our way, DM gives us a phase spiderling (we had barely made 2nd level). the spider played dead twice. the third time, it was finally dead. i approached and cut off its head (so i could have a blacksmith turn it into a helmet at a later date. and to ensure it was actually dead).
the following session, we came across a fort in the middle of the road. inside we got ambushed by a giant owl, when it grabbed our fighter. i ran in to convince it to befriend us. i didn't have rations, so i asked the fighter, who tossed me some. i got nat 1'd the catch, causing it to sprawl across the floor. i went with it and got a nat 20 on deception, convincing the owl i had left the food there for it. after that, it was friendly and stayed with me the rest of the dungeon.
a little while after that we came across two giant crabs. i ran in and intimidated them (24 non nat). after scaring them both, i persuaded them to join us as well. one of them died in our final boss fight, but after we left the fort and got back to town i had a saddle crafted. i was also allowed to take a feat (played off as training, since DM decided two years would pass in game time, so he could start a proper war). so, i took mounted combat.
after two sessions, i was a bard with a phase spiderling head-helmet, with a giant owl companion, and a giant crab mount. that character (may she rest in peace, as my cat ate the character sheet) was known as Elena Crabsknight, the animal singer.
this was a while ago, so i can't remember most of the finer details. but i remember charging into combat atop my mighty-shelled steed.

I mean after killing 400. And with her having no hand in the killing of and torturing of a thousand Souls. Its more of a smack in the face. That the player should have made there sacrifice mean something. They would not Harbor any ill will towards her. If anything these lost souls would want a hero with such stature to hopefully have the opportunity to save their loved ones from suffering the same fate.
So that she could do what they could not. I would imagine being tormented for over a year they would have seen the strength of character and mind that this hero has. And also being thankful that they had the opportunity to still be in some form. For whatever time was given by her great sacrifice by not giving into the pain.
Dont get me wrong I see the other side of the coin. But especially after already destroying 400 Souls. Who knows had she been brave enough to live with the burden she may have saved many more then just a mere 600. Just a thought.
Bottom line just because you're thrust into circumstances that can make you feel as if you're becoming some form of a monster. It takes a much stronger character to live with such a sad burdens. But knowing that they can become better because of them not weaker. Self-sacrifice is never really the answer.
Rurouni Kenshin battousai the manslayer after slaughtering multiple people in order to create a new government. He whines up becoming a Wandering Samurai after the new government is put in place. Valuing never to kill again using a reverse blade sword. While at the same time helping and saving others. Protecting life instead of destroying it. Etc..
Anyways just a thought nothing more. Good video keep up the good work

I wish my group could get into things as much as this group. I try to build a character, but it's hard to roleplay them with how we play things.
Reason 1: We play short sessions. As in once a week, for about 2-2.5 hours.
Reason 2: Most players don't build deep characters. At the beginning there was more thought put into them, but less and less now. Of course, the DM has said that we should try building characters with more thought. The DM has also said his goal is to kill all our characters, because he thinks the best part is building a new one.
Anyway, that's my rant. To the group of players from whom this story came, I'm sorry for your loss. She was a true hero in the end

Most inferior planes have places and names based off greek myths or Dante Alighieri as it is fitting, as well as its inhabitants and deities.
There are subtler influences too; the dragon who created the world is Ao, clearly taken from IAO which is a cabbalistic name for yahweh, the Drow goddess Lolth clearly comes from Lilith, and so on.

Also question for DMs out there: if you play a Paladin and something like this happens in a campaign, is it good enough of a motive to change subclass into Oath of Vengeance? because BOY DO I WANNA HAVE A FEW "words" WITH THAT ARCANALOTH LEMME TELL YA!!!

There are sacrifices deeper than death... but not as deep as generosity of our sponsors!!!
