Agreed but you also gotta remember legitimately homophobic people use these moments to bash gay people just for existing. I am both a homosexual and vote conservative so I see it first hand how people who actually hate us feel empowered by this and think everyone thinks the way they do. In regards to self-identification. If a person is the arbiter of their own reality, then why is one person's perspective of their own self greater than my perspective of that person.

You give as much respect to theirs as they do to yours, the difference is not in the opinion but in how loudly they or you can shout, (and how willing you are to listen. Some people get the insane idea that they are shouting on behalf of a god, when in reality they are just using the idea of a god to fraudulently elevate their own voice.

Evolution is not 'the survival of the fittest' in the sense of the biggest, strongest bastard winning. It is the survival of evolutionary changes making a species more 'fit' to its environment, whatever that may be at any time. That's the theory, at least. I think Turek might have been a little more sophisticated in his position there. Other than that, we saw a young man, vitriolic with a personal agenda, uninterested in hearing an answer to any question he posed. Typical of youth, and of agendas driven by emotion. Maybe he will grow up and evolve.
Survival of the fittest isn’t actually about animals sensing danger, like a meteor’s destruction; that’s ludicrous. That thinking carries this modern, unhinged notion that parents pass on what they learn in life to their young in their DNA; I.e. because I learned to “dig deeper” for some unknown reason, my offspring will instinctively know how to dig deeper still at birth. It’s dumb. SOTF has only, ever been about those animals which can reproduce more effectively and efficiently. Therefore “the fittest” mostly applies to healthier, more reproductive female species, while “the fittest” in males are those which contribute more robust genes, and better protection of their females (and young in many cases). I fear you’ve bought into the left’s notions a bit when it comes to evolution. If it exists, SOTF applies to communities only as far as being in one can propogate their young; one can’t stretch it out to cover society’s “morals.” In SOTF males regularly kill one another (and their rivals’ offspring) to ensure THEIR genes are the ones being propagated…murder. I’m no young-earther, but I’ve studied this debate with professors in prestigious universities for years; the matter of evolution is not cut and dried by any means. Perhaps you need another, closer look at the matter.

My question is concerning the summary you gave about Sam Harris's argument for secular morality. (I haven't fully gotten into his breakdown of it yet, but I fail to see how it's the best option to compete with a religious form of objective morality.
As you start around 3:10, I couldn't help but think that even the system proposed could easily be as subjective as any other system. (in the summary as I could be missing some critical information, which is why I'm asking for more clarity)
If it's the society's/culture's idea of "what is most beneficial," it's still entirely subjective to that culture and, therefore, just opinion. Sure, there are many people sharing the same opinion, but as we know, societies and culture's can be objectively wrong in their subjective beliefs.
I am not working on Sam Harris's full breakdown of his moral system, but this seems to be a big hole in it.

How do you know? If god talked to you and said something different would you believe the voce in your head or the claims of a voice in the head of the long dead? would you seek professional psychiatric help or just follow what the voice tells you?
If someone else told you god had passed on a new message to them how would you know they were actually telling the truth? How do you differentiate true revelation/prophesy from delusions or lies (other than they agree with you)?
To an atheist all claims of Devine revelation are either delusions or lies and can be dismissed as such, how do you figure out the 'genuine'?
If I told you god had communicated with me, how would you know I was telling the truth what questions would you ask and what answers could convince you I was genuine.

Usually agree with the guy on stage, not this time. I don't need to believe in God to know murder is bad. We live in a society that does not necessarily rely on that to decide what is good or bad, but rather on what the consequences would be, or simply or own conscience. We know that if we take a life, things won't go well, and even if it was allowed by our laws and (somehow) morals we couldn't survive all together, and everything we hold dear would be in danger.
Notions of good and bad have evolved over the ages, again and again, so we can hardly talk about an absolute good or bad/evil. Religion is supposed to be a guide, not a timeless, absolute guide of truth.

All moral codes are based on a concept of fair and unfair. But and why should we assume that life should be fair? Is it fair that a big fierce lion kills a cute little doe and eats it? Our concept that the world should function in a way that we call fair cannot come from us because not everyone agrees . But they still know they have done wrong or acted unfairly . If morals were man made what is good today will be bad tomorrow. Jesus warned us about that time when good will be evil and evil good. Without God the strongest and most aggressive decide what is good and what is bad, and it always suits their desires.
One must step back and see what sets us apart from the animals (and why we AREN’T so different at times); we should still be endorsing or celebrating murder if it means OUR offspring will flourish against others…IF we came from animals. There’d be no reason to toss that aspect of survival of the fittest aside as we “evolved” into an intelligent species. Those types of “morals” should be hard-wired more than most into our DNA, right? So why aren’t they? Where did “fairness” come from? Propagation of OUR, personal species should be the highest, loftiest goal, not kindness, fairness, equality, love.

evolution is a fairy tale. time does not favor the concept of biological evolution it works against it. like having the ingredients for a cake it must be put together and baked before the ingredients go bad. except the cake we are baking is orders of magnitude more complex than our best computers.
