Just got a 2024 Outback. Definitely not a performance car, especially with the non-turbo engine, but that's not why I got it. It's a quiet smooth riding car that handles very well. I do wish a few of the functions that are on the 11 inch screen were available as buttons or knobs, but you can adapt easily to them being on the touch screen. Bottom line is that I am very happy with the Outback.
That's good to know. For me it came down to the minimal towing capacity and meh MPG for the Outback vs CRV Hybrid (pretty much zero towing except for a hitch mount bike rack- which while zippy to drive was surprisingly underwhelming and I'm used to the lower to the ground feel. So Outback it is. Now we just have to find a dealership that doesn't make me cringe so hard my back hurts. lol
one thing not mentioned is Subaru's amazing reliability. We have a 2011 Outback, 6 cyl., and I don't think we'll ever need to replace it.@@andrea.rivers
So, 8 months later how are you feeling about it? And what trim did you get? Im currently looking at the Premium (with the keyless start package) or the Limited myself.
@@spearhead1657 I got the premium with the push button start option package. 9 months later, I would NOT buy it again. The combination of the gutless engine and CVT seem to annoy me even more as time goes on. And the 11 inch touchscreen which controls most everything is not my favorite feature.
You want some cheese with that whine, son I am 75 years old been driving since I was 15,sir tires bad, batteries bad, exhaust systems bad, radiators bad, heat for winter bad, should I go on,this is what you put up with in,40 s50s 60 s 70s auto mobiles! You are lucky people,so stop the whine,or go to Army,Navy,Marine Corp boot camp! You will see the light of day!Good Luck!!!
I am driving a 2022 Subaru Ascent Limited and I am very pleased. We plan to purchase a new 2024 Subaru Outback. After driving I highly recommend the 2.4-Liter turbo engine. It makes entering the freeway a breeze. I also love that I can turn off the auto stop/start switch, an item I can't stand!
Looking very cool .... one thing I would like to see on new vehicles is a dash cam for anti-theft purposes and monitoring while driving - would be so much easier to use than aftermarket stuff ...
I have a 2022 Outback Touring with the 2.5 and just hit 44k miles. My lifetime average fuel economy is 28 mpg so I consider the combined EPA number to be pretty bang on. My only complaint for the Outback is that I want a hybrid system! I'm hoping that the 2025 redesign will bring us that!
Why do you want a hybrid? More mpg?
@@dwightmannemore torque, more powah, more mpg
@@dwightmanne power and MPG. Best of both worlds.
How do you have lifetime mpg? I’ve been test driving a few of these and none of us, dealer people included, if that reading. We could can toggle trip a and b which have their mpg but not lifetime.
@@bepowerful2160 It’s attached to my driver profile. The Touring model, and Limited with the driver monitoring system, will track this but i think it has to recognize you in order to show it.
One of my favorite cars in our family lineup of audi and bmw vehicles. It’s an honest workaholic vehicle. Does its job very well. Already on my 2nd Outback and can’t wait to buy a 3rd one in 2024 when the new model comes out!
Purchased a 23 Limited XT about a month ago and absolutely love it. Fits our family of 4 well, and has a great mix of space, comfort, and efficiency. Safety is key as well!
Congrats on your new Outback!
Do you still have it? And what's you average mpg on XT?
@@ihors6327 Yep. Still love it. City mpg is rough at around 18, but that’s a lot of idling in the parent pick up line at school. Highway is usually 26-30, depending on how fast I’m driving. Some of our speed limits are 85 😬
Fantastic review as always!
(Also, the frosty hands to frosty the snowman comment was hilarious!)
Glad someone thinks our jokes are halfway funny lol. Happy Friday
Good job of reviewing the Outback. Glad Mason is able to give us a real-world measurement of the length of the cargo area with his handy dandy tape measure. Subaru gives a measurement of 75 inches, but you never know where the front seats are located when they take that measurement. I know with you the measurement is done with the front seat positioned for Drew, who is a normal height person and close to my height. So the 78 inch measurement you come up with is the number I'm looking for.
Black plastic cladding is awesome - very functional as it brushes away branches on trails. I have the turbo 2.4 and it has a good bit of power. Rides smooth as a baby a** Best car I’ve ever had !
I have a 2021 Outback Premium. It's my car camping road trip car. Love this car, very happy with it.
The seats on the Outback and Legacy Limited and Touring are so comfortable. I'm tall and that thigh extension on my Legacy Touring XT really helps on long trips. Plus both them are really quiet and smooth riding. Perfect road trip cars.
Everyone raves about the Outback seats, but the driver's seat in my '23 Touring XT is too hard in my opinion. A bit more padding would make a lot of difference to my butt. Aside from the firmness, they are nicely bolstered so I'll give them that.
@@dlg5485 Everyone's different I guess. I literally have no ass, so no built in cushion. 😄 I love getting in them. Its always an "ahhh..." moment they feel so supportive and good.
First thing I did when I got my 2015 Outback new was order the sheepskin seat covers from Costco. 8.5 years later the drivers side cover is beat up, and I plan to wash them then switch sides putting them back on.
The sheepskin seat covers not only protect the upholstery but also insulate the seats from hot and cold very well and add a more comfortable soft touch.
I am waiting out a correction in the automotive market to add a new Outback while keeping the old one. The daily supply on these was only 9 days last week and that leaves the buyer in an unfavorable position in a sellers market.
@@jamesdarcy3902 That's not a name I have heard in long time, Sheepskins.
I'm 6'4" and found that in order to not brush my head on the roof I had to lower the seats to where I felt like I was sitting on the floor.
I just got a 2024 Limited XT, I had the 2020 before. They made great strides with this one. Wireless smart phone connections, heated steering wheel is now 100% around the steering wheel and the heated seats are easier to work (no second pop up screen). I got the remote start on this new one, it is disappointing that it requires a second FOB (the main FOB also auto starts but you have to be really close for it to work). That remote start system is an extra $370.00 USD but in Canada where I am, the cost is $710.00 CAD ($522.00 USD). They should ask me to put my hands in the air when they sell it because it does feel like I am being robbed for that system!
Thank you!
Very helpful!
Great reviews!
Hoping they listen and increase storage in the front.
Need to make a new center stack and arm rest are like the new crosstrek.
Love my 2020 Outback however loved my partners 2018 better.
Peppier and more leg room and storage space for some like me at 6ft7.
We both drive Ascents now but would still love to have an Outback side wagon one day.
Question: did they add rear vents to the premium. Heard that only the base didn’t have them and that was a huge downer with my 2020.
Fun fact: the day after I wrote this review, I took my Ascent in to have the interior foot well lights installed. We received a 2023 loaner premium, trim, nice additions with the rear vents and the larger buttons on the all digital center display.
Great review!
Great thorough review!
Thanks!
That was a good review... Here it comes... But, you talked a bit about taking it off road, carrying kayaks, camping, etc. I would like to know if the seats fold flat enough to sleep in the back, and when sleeping in the back can you sit up? Also I believe you said the tow weight was 2000 lbs, but you flashed 2700 lbs on the screen, which is it? and finally, what size is the receiver? Not for towing, but for putting an 80 pound E-Bike on a carrier (not a trailer), 80lbs bike + 60 lbs carrier is a lot of weight bouncing on a 1-1/4" receiver. is it a 2" receiver?
Once again, a good review, thanks.
I am a committed wagon guy and I love my 2012 Outback 2.5i Limited. Despite its age, there isn't a hint of mechanical faults or interior rattles. The interior is very solid. The power isn't as much as the new ones but I am sure it's still somewhat slow given its weight. I would buy the new one though in a heartbeat. It's a nice wagon that isn't overpriced like the Swedes and German counterparts. I just wish Toyota would make a wagon for the US market. That would be amazing
How many miles do you currently have? I just ordered a 2023 Forester, will be my first Subaru product.
There’s a lot of foolish comments on here . Firstly, before you make rash judgements go and drive the Outback - it is one of the best reliable cars that are made today. If you want more power try the turbo- oh it’s boring? Drive that and you be shocked. Station wagon boring? Oh and having a SUV like 95% of Americans is not boring? Subarus all wheel drive is awesome - with snow tires it handles any snow and never gets stuck. The cladding is for off road - branches and stones wrecking your paint. The leather seats are excellent and since it’s long the car rides very smooth. I throw 3 big dogs in the back and it goes anywhere. It’s a great practical car - just disable the Auto Start it’s horrible!
I have a soft spot for the Outback and it's always on my shopping list. Several friends have Outbacks and just rave about them. I love the integrated infotainment system that looks like it was done on purpose, not just an iPad stuck on the dashboard (looking at you, Mazda, and others!).
That said, I just generally find the features and performance of other vehicles better (like my current 2016 Mazda CX-5). I like the cladding, but the new trim under the headlights looks like the car's mascara is running, especially against the white paint. 😜 I hope that they offer a plug-in hybrid option down the road as that is what I really want my next vehicle to be.
The back seats also recline for additional comfort. Just bought a 2023 Touring XT a few weeks ago. We’re very happy with it. I like it more than our 2018 BMW X3. It’s better equipped and more enjoyable to drive.
X3 is over priced junk
I have an Oynx Xt. Best trim all the way, water proof seats great get up and go . Great towing for a wagon. I wouldnt even consider buying a car this day and age. The mark up and interest rates like hell. Nk csr os worth upgrading or buying one if not needed.
Subaru should add a dedicated off roader SUV and bring back the Baja as a compact truck to their lineup
With Kia, Ford and others reviving the unibody compact truck segment, I suspect Subaru will get back in eventually. It's a resurgent segment that they more or less invented, so they won't be able to resist reclaiming their crown.
What are the security measure to keep from your car getting stolen with the key FOB if you have auto start?
Loved my last outback but I absolutely despise stop start transmissions, glad you can at least shut them off, to me it’s totally ridiculous ,you know you’re gonna burn your starter out eventually, so where in the world is the savings. Along with having to deal with it when it does burn out. That’s why I’m reluctant to get another outback, I’ve been sticking with the CX5 Mazda instead.
Great vehicle for going to in and outdoor adventure for going off-road and on-road and plenty of cargo space.
The greater towing rate in the XT's is great. Also, can you also rate the ability to ride over speed humps in your car reviews.
Have a 6 cylinder 2017 outback limited and so in love with my car it will be hard to upgrade one day😅
They should have a model or option for cladding delete. On the ice silver and sapphire blue, and a couple other color options, it is less noticeable. That ice color is certainly better than your average silver -- brighter! Crimson red and the metallic green is nice. Of course the dark gray blends in, but I have that on my car, and will be seeking change -- change is good. :)
I have 25,000 miles on my 2220 outback,no problem with the CVT!
Thanks for cargo length, many reviews don't mention this important measurement
Have a 23 outback XT. It has plenty of go and does 9l/100km no issues. The CVT drives nice.
I’ve been driving hiluxs and rangers and honestly wouldn’t swap
is it 9l/100km in the city, or is it highway?
@@ihors6327 if you average 35-40km/hr. It has an average speed meter
Great resource on the noise levels. Can you do a WRX?
I love my 2024. Great value limited outback ❤
Does Google Maps use the full 11.6" screen in Android Auto or just part of the screen as in orevious years' models?
I believe it's just the top half of the screen
Note to viewers, the vehicle shown in this video has Optional Package 34. The Limited does not come standard with a heated steering wheel, navigation and power moonroof. Just want to point this out in case you don't stay to the end of the video.
Subaru raised the MRSP by 5k. That's why they do not bargain beyound MSRP. Same vehicle with different plastic trims. My last 4 cars were Outbacks. I have the Onyx XT and only get 25 mpg combined. Good, safe car, but never a looker. 😂
I've put LED turn signals lights on my 2020 subaru forester, I would suggest the same to new subaru owners interested in having a more modern look.
Best car reviews UA-cam channel
Thank you, friend!
Until Subaru fixes the electronic issues with center console crashing and going blank I would not suggest it.
I just sold my 2020 outback XT as they will not allow customers to update software remotely and spending 2-3 hours at a dealership every time you want to update to try and address glitches is not acceptable. Also if you want the upgraded sound system you better do it at the day of purchase. Subaru corp is saying they are not allowing rockford fostgate upgrades only new purchases on the date of sale. The stock audio system ... um yep its stock... the harmon is very Nice but be aware its only on specific trims.
One other thing... I REALLY with they would get rid of the Piano black around the shifter... 6 months into ownership you are going to see every ... single... scratch.
Looks nice. But can u review the Subaru WRX. It would be nice if u review it.
Both my sisters own Subarus, they hate the auto stop.
I don’t understand why, if you have LED headlights and taillights, you can’t also have LED turn signals and backup lights. What’s with that?
I don't like the Auto Start/Stop. Maybe ok if most of the stops are lights but most of mine are stop signs. When traffic is such that I can go I don't want to wait for the engine to start - so the first thing I do when I get in is turn off the auto start/stop and turn on the Auto Vehicle Hold.
Outback has not change the interior since 2020, I have one, a few outside changes but that it. Front grill biggest change.
Nice job.
Kind of a lead foot coming from a dead stop. If you go a slower off the start the noise level will be considerably less,
Are you able to disable the auto start/stop feature in settings permanently?
I don't think so. I believe you have to push the button on the screen each drive
They should give the Legacy 7 inches of ground clearance.
I miss a sedan.
Lol
can anyone tell me if you sit up high or elevated in the outback like you would in a SUV when driving?
Yes, it has an SUV-like seating position
I just can't tolerate that giant infotainment system with all the controls integrated into the touchscreen. I intentionally purchased a 2019 OB specifically to avoid that.
Xt limited and touring are the only models with side acoustics windows significantly quieter imo. Regular touring does not have it. Xt is very different
Did they fix windshield cracking issues?
Yes, but you already knew that, troll.
No
Most looking good and reliable SUV out there it's Subaru 👌
Outbacks are great cars.
For the future--I would've preferred viewing a color other than grey -preferably a white car,, it was difficult to see the details you were pointing out on the exterior views esp. the rear, since it didn't contrast with the road, and the shadows!
I wanted outback really bad(2019 $49.000) to expensive,so I settled for a 2015 Cherokee Jeep($29.000) damn I sure wanted a outback:(
Sell it and if your budget and lifestyle can compromise, it’s worth the dollar
@@danielnegrete9967 you are correct:)
How dependable is the cvt
Subarus never break down that’s how good they are. Great in the snow with all wheel drive
Koala bear?- no they’re just koalas, not bears. 😊
Is there any information out about 2025 Outback Hybrid?
Not currently!
Now my SUV to buy!
good review as always.
Thanks again!
So no updates on the 2024 Touring level trim?
I just picked up my Outback Touring XT & love it. Driving on the interstate is so much smoother and quieter
than my 2019 touring (which we kept). I am so impressed with this 2024. The vented (AC)
front seats are fabulous. We live in the hot south.
Love the new front view camera.
I would like to see a video on the 2024 please!
This is our 4th Outback and each one gets better!
Its the best SUV for a family of 4. Nothing else to discuss.
Yes, the best wagon.
Subaru needs to update that driver cluster and those 1990 graphics on the center screen.
Why? You wouldn't buy one anyhow.
They're fine. I'm just glad the dials are real and not LCDs
It’s looks alright, I don’t like the CVT 😂!
Same here. CVT's sucks.
@@lonelyman1967 i know right, I agree!!
Its ok with 2.4 turbo
They need to ditch the CVT. I wouldn’t touch one with a ten foot pole. I don’t trust the boxer engines either. They have a tendency to develop oil leaks, burn oil, and blow head gaskets. They should put a Toyota powertrain in these and call it a day. The car is great otherwise. Toyota owns an interest in Subaru.
So it’s great except for the engine and transmission….
To keep things simple, why didn’t Subaru simply manufacture only the 2.5L Boxer engine, and then offer that as a turbo and non-turbo option? Seems that would simplify the assembly line.
The 2023 outback Touring XT only gets 18.5mpg in city only driving. My 68 year old wife only drives it to work about 9 miles one way. I don't know anyone who gets the epa 23 "combined" especially if you don't drive any freeway. I even put the tires at 40psi to try to improve it: it worked; it used to get 17.5mpg. It is what it is. More power in a 4 cylinder 3,800lb car via a turbo uses more fuel. There is no way around physics.
I easily get 20+ mpg with our '22 Outback XT in city driving, can easily hit 23mpg on mixed, and I'm not a slow driver. Depends on your driving habits.
The little soo-bar-oooo. Wow
Huh. You can already see wear on driver seat…the pooching. I’ve been driving a few of these for consideration and I’ve seen it on other similar trims.
Only compliant is the location of the 12V outlet in the side storage bin. I will have to run a power cord from it to my absolute necessary radar detector unit (standard required equipment in Texas/Louisiana).
What about Subaru's "Eyesight"? Try driving one into an empty cardboard box = very impressive. The symmetrical all-wheel drive is worth mentioning!
That black plastic extension of the front bumper to under the headlights is really ugly - specially in a white or light color Outback. What was Subaru thinking?
It's not ugly but go on.....
Just colour match them if you don't like them, it's not the end of the world
Not ugly at all but ok?
Go to another brand
I went with the,Autumn green metallic, beautiful paint and looks different in different light !
So no auto wipers it’s a shame with such a outdoors focused car that it doesn’t have that
Please review mahindra scorpio n.
What is the exterior color of this Outback?
I think it’s the Magnetite Grey.
Touchscreen climate and accessory controls instead of buttons and knobs, eh? *crosses Subaru off of shopping list*
What is Subaru’s take on hybrid options for it’s most popular models?
By-the-way, I leased a 2018 Outback Touring. I liked the car, although I had a problem with the rear gate that took the dealership several months to fix (they finally figured out that there was a problem with the cables under the driver’s seat; plus I had troubles with the car battery). Personally, I would like Subaru to update their exteriors by getting more bold with the design. Also, the dash and the interior in general is boring.
12 and 16? Why did I think you guys were twins?!?
I thought it was some sort of creative editing :)
We do look alike but we're 4 years apart haha
I'm on my 4th or 5th outback. Currently, have 2020. I can't fucking stand the infotainment system. My lease turn-in is in a month. I don't think I can do another 3 years with this system. My brother's Mazda has joystick controls that you can't fuckup, and are less distracting while driving.
I hope they will add 360 camera by 2050
I can't really deal with that cladding on the front of the car. IMHO it looks ridiculous (especially on the lighter color vehicles).
Its an off road vehicle dummy
The car is just ugly.
What is displayed in that “unibrow” thing right above the main 11” display?
After my 2021 crosstrek cvt giving out and continously giving me problems, I don't think I am sticking with subaru anymore. Mazda gives you way more power and way more features for less price
Mazda doesn't give you way more power for less price. The turbo 2.5L in current Mazda lineup have 10 less hp and 40 more peak torque, which gives a 0-60 within 0.1s of the turbo 2.4L in the Outback. On regular fuel, the Mazda is actually slower by an estimated 0.4s for 0-60. The price for a similar spec'd Mazda turbo and Outback turbo is within 5% here.
Now let's start on the Mazda's shortcomings: torsion bar rear suspension, non full-time AWD, needing premium fuel to reach those performance numbers (regular fuel results in a noticeably slower vehicle than the 2.4L turbo in the Subaru), and much decreased visibility all around.
Thete is no excuse for Subaru continuing to make vehicles that get less than 30 mpg city/hwy.
out of all the subarus currently on sale there is none as recognisables as the outback? really? lol what about the WRX?
Bring back the 6M
What is cladding?
The black plastic protection around the bottom of the car. Protects against branches and stones when driving off road
@@gyges5495 Thank you!
All car reviewers always start with the front grill new roughness design 😅 Honestly I’m careless about how a car looks as long as its engine is reliable and less trouble to pay more down the road.
Definitely is getting all... in any trim...
You sleep in it is what he is saying for cargo space.
Those nipple fog lights are truly bad, and I do like both fog lights and....
They should bring back the 6 cylinder and put the turbos on it.
That would fry the CVT
I can get behind that 😊
Bought a new 2024 last week and the nanny warnings are worse than in my old 2018. Great vehicle, but annoying as hell.
I’m not sure why Subaru isn’t jumping on the sub-compact truck scene. They’re brand is perfect for that small truck and they’ve done it before.
They might, but not before '25 at the earliest.
You should be comparing sound with other cross-over vehicles - not SUV's.
You didn’t happen to measure the width, did you?
I hate the new daytime running lights
you never said how many seconds to 60mph
