Despite the oft-mentioned camera shake, I think your video is great. Your presentation skills are (uncommonly) excellent. The side-by-side thing at the end was also very helpful.
This is a great demo for different levels of camera control - everything from "tripod mounted DSLR" to "toddler holding webcam on head during 9.0 earthquake"
Good video. I can't tell which Acer he's using but sometimes its good to update the bios if possible especially in dual core laptops. I did this in two Lenovo T61 machines. You won't get SATA 3 speeds but SATA 2 is still good. Look here for tips to optimize your SSD. You want to limit the writes. Windows 7, 8 and 10 all have trim but there are still things users can do to ensure a SSD lasts longer although in general they will out last and out perform any mechanical drive.
I just put a Samsung 850 EVO 250gb SSD into my four year old Toshiba Satellite and the difference is amazing. I now have a spare 500gb 2.5" HDD which I am going to put into my PC as spare storage.
+Jonathan Peden How much RAM do you have? My laptop is about 3 yrs. old and thinking of changing the HDD to SSD, and upgrading the RAM to 8GB. I was thinking it might an AMD problem. Intel chips are faster.
Raffi Melkonian I have 4gb of RAM. As for the rest - my AMD Athlon dual core runs at 2.3ghz and it has never had a problem or run slow. Can you just swap from AMD to Intel without a new motherboard? But my SSD has given everything a speed boost and it produces a lot less heat. I upgraded from W7 to W10 and the only downside is my graphics card will not let me capture gaming video, just still pics. So the SSD was my last roll of the dice before I get around to buying a more up to date laptop.
+CheeseBagel You could put it in an external enclosure and use it through a USB port, or with the Lenovo T-series laptops you can buy a caddy tray drop the hard drive into it, and swap it in place of the CD-RW or DVD optical drive and have an onboard 2nd storage drive.
My laptop is making clicking sounds, takes about 5-10 minutes to boot, and programs, browsers, track pad, etc., often keeps freezing or not responding. Will changing to ssd drive fix this?
+jukijunk the clicking you hear might be your hard drive about to fail, so you might be forced to replace it soon anyway! Make sure you back everything up asap in case it does go. The other symptoms may be due to a very clogged up Windows installation, so if that's the case then yes a fresh install will sort that and everything will be faster and more responsive. Good luck! Once you're done, don't forget to show us your handywork and let us know about the improvements. We're @SwitchedOnNet on Twitter if you want to send a photo or video of the newly upgraded laptop when you're done :)
2:58 Don't do anything like this if you are not experts. even experts don't do it. it tells information about it's products on your hands. and sometime it shows you how to put this thing in your PC/Laptop
So ... that Crucial SSD Drive will plug right in to my 2003 Gateway Laptop that is a PATA Drive? I would think one would need an adapter to make it work with the old PATA input.
Hey guys, I just installed windows 7 on my new laptop, and then bought an SSD. So my question is do I have to reinstall windows 7 after I've installed the SSD, or can I just: Turn off the laptop > swap hard disk with SSD > done? Ty for answer :-)
I want to buy a new laptop and immediately upgrade this to SSD. Do i have to first start up my laptop and deactivate some software or should i remove it before even turning on my laptop for the first time?
In 2012 this was probably an expensive move, now it's relevant, though I suspect that laptop is slower than my three year old chromebook and not fit for purpose.
The last thing I wanna do is be more productive at work, I am sure the 15 seconds you save on boot time won't make you a better worker. That is why offices have a coffee maker. LOL
I have a old hard drive that is not working anymore, can I replace the hard drive with a ssd and reinstall Windows and could you install the ssd if you don't have the wrist band?
Hi Taran, yes you can just replace the broken hard drive with an SSD and install Windows onto that. Obviously you won't be able to copy over any of the data unfortunately, so hopefully anything important was backed up somewhere! Your laptop will feel like it's "brand new" with a completely fresh Windows installation on it. Depending on the version, you might need the serial key (usually stuck on the bottom of a laptop, under battery, or on the rear of a tower case) or it might just use a digital licence. You can install the SSD without a wristband by all means - that's just a precaution to prevent static buildup on your body discharging through the electronics inside your machine. As an alternative, you could touch the outside of a computer chassis first, or touch a radiator nearby if that's earthed.... basically anything which would discharge any buildup safely. If you can't do that, don't worry; just be careful and I'm sure you'll be fine :)
I'm sorry but your comparison does not make any sense. It's not apple to apple. You are comparing Fresh windows (just installed on SSD) with old windows (installed 3-4 years ago on HDD along with a lot of Bloatware) ! To compare correctly, the HDD should be cloned to the new SSD, then the comparison will make sense.
Hello! On your video (time 7:41 - where Disk 0 Unallocated) you just click the Next button, and Windows begins to be installed. I have a mistake that it is impossible to create the section. Do you know how to solve the issue?
Do you have other partitions already there that need to be deleted? Try mounting the drive in another machine and doing a full format before trying again.
It'll definitely make a difference, yes. The read/write times will be faster and you won't need to worry about fragmentation. Bear in mind that you'll still be limited by other bottlenecks, but you'll at least be removing two big ones. Most SSDs you buy these days will be SATAIII but obviously you're still limited by the interface in your laptop so don't expect the FULL experience, and it's not going to turn your laptop into a superbeast, but YES - go for it, you won't regret it. If I were you, I'd probably go for something like this 256GB Samsung SSD, which is currently only $129 on Amazon: amzn.to/2wD4x4K
But then again if you spent an age getting a bunch of stuff that you actually need on the original drive then you may wanna migrate if you have the software to do that rather than a clean install
i got my laptop from best buy store it had core i3 2gb ram 500gb hdd windows 7 home premium but now it has core i7 8gb ram windows 8.1 pro Samsung 840 pro 512gb ssd windows load time 5 seconds can u beat that.
TabalugaDragon consumer laptops are not like this at all. maybe you have a disguistingly ugly. 3 inch thick jet engine loud 'portable desktop', but i think it's more likely that you're just a dumbass who wasted money an entirely new logic board
privileged you know what? it's always funny when someone says nonsences like that trying to insult me. www.notebookcheck.net/Review-MSI-CX640-Notebook-GT-520M.52171.0.html it has a pga processor socket so I replaced my core i3 2310m with i7 2640m. eat that. and no, it's not loud, just as quiet as other laptops, and it was an ordinary budget laptop, got it for 650 dollars more than 3 years ago, replaced the processor for 150 dollars(it cost that low at that time) a year ago

***** I said that because I have a 750 TI, and games work very good, but, for example, I can't play Wolfenstein (which isn't a marvel or graphics) on max settings, or at least not on 60 fps (Of course I'm talking about 1080p resolution) and the 760 is just a step further I think the problem is my RAM and CPU, because the only decent part of my PC is the GPU. Maybe the i3-2100 3,1 gHz and 4 GB of RAM are limiting the capacity of the GPU?
***** Really? there is THAT much difference between those 2? Anyways, I couldn't have got that one, since I didn't have the money, and anyways I don't think it would have been worth it. One las question, if you are willing, Farcry 4 works like crap. I've seen videos from people with the same GPU and it works just fine, so that's not the problem. You think it's the RAM or the CPU? Because I can upgrade RAM, but the CPU is other story...
***** The problem isn't the difficulty. I don't know how to do it, but I can learn. The problem is the price. I've read that I could put any second generation Intel processors to my motherboard. And I don't know if that's enough (Like, buying a second gen i5) or I should buy other motherboard and buy other family of CPU.
a lady gave me her toahiba laptop cuz it was so slow it took over a minutw ro load now look aty upgrade of a 64 gb pateiot torque2 and 8 swc load...ssd is great for the older laptop and xompitera
Great tutorial, mate. Thanks so much. Absolutely well explained and the hint with the anti-static wristband was top. Cheers!
Does your cameraman have Parkinsons?
lmao

Thanks for your kind comments... I'm pleased to confirm my brother's hand shake has improved massively in the last 6.5 years 😂😂
need to shake the camera more
Hahha
haha ^^

Very helpful about deactivating licensed software. Needed to know that. Thanks!
Excellent idea. I did that with my old Toshiba Windows Vista laptop. Only I have upgrade to 4GB of ram with Windows 7 Home Premium.
Very informative - I find my laptop boots up in 12 seconds these days rather than 45 - I'm totally converted to SSDs!

Jonathan Peden It was more like unleashing the full PC potential 7 years after it's purchase.
I LOVE YOUR ACENT! !and your video

Quick question, would using the old HDD for extra storage just require putting the drive in some sort of USB enclosure?
+CheeseBagel You could put it in an external enclosure and use it through a USB port, or with the Lenovo T-series laptops you can buy a caddy tray drop the hard drive into it, and swap it in place of the CD-RW or DVD optical drive and have an onboard 2nd storage drive.

The os stays in the HDD
Ait, thanks
I want to buy a new laptop and immediately upgrade this to SSD. Do i have to first start up my laptop and deactivate some software or should i remove it before even turning on my laptop for the first time?
Will I need to transfer what's on the stock harddrive to the SSD?
The SLC ones that I try to find cheaply will cost you dearly per gigabyte but SLC is a much faster memory than the MLC nand and will also last longer.
wait so once I install the ssd do I still need to install windows?
So I can just use my system restore discs to install my windows? And copy all my files and renistall my programs separatley.
To skip installing windows could you just plug it in as a USB or plug in the old one as a USB ?
Yes
thanks
was the HDD a 5400 or 7200? if your HDD was 5400, then the SSD is not fast enough...
where did he connect is bracelet?

2:57 thats my boy :D I allways do that !!!!
Is there any possibility to keep both HHD and SSD together in a laptop?
Yes actually you can by replacing the optical druve
Thank you brother
Can I find an ssd that is smaller? Like not in capacity gb I mean in size
very nice!!
that laptop is acer aspire 9300?
Thanks so much
