I remember polishing by hand my dad's 18 ft Grumman double ender. Oh, if you get a hole in it, you can use a ball peen hammer and peen the hold closed (if it's small I suppose) it worked on dads and still hasn't leaked.

The hard coating is the anodizing. It’s a lot harder than the base aluminum. Tried polishing a very early Grumman and gave up. You’d have to grind off that and that’s to much risky metal removal. I had a orbital sander with grits to 12,000

After you are done polishing it what will you use to protect the aluminum from further oxidation? I will watch the next video where you probably already have the answer.

Great job and thanks for the info. Just wondering though what you can put on it after you're done polishing to hold that shine. Is there anything? I'm going to be using mine in ocean water through a harbor

    Hey Mark
    Man... I like you dude.
    Former truck driver like myself.
    X - polishing pro.
    Lawn mower extraordinaire
    Summer landscape specialist
    Fall clean up guy
    Snow plowing . . .
I do all the same stuff, plus small engines, vehicle repairs, minor welding, computer work . . .
I also do volunteer driving where I take people, mostly elderly, to their Dr.s appointments.
You know . . . you should be using jeweler's rouge instead of turtle wax. Any trucker worth his weight in log books could tell you that.
Wish I could post a couple pictures here, I'd show you some of my truckin polishing projects.
    Keep up the great work.
    Uncle Vic

      Ah ha ;)
Day two and your switching to the jeweler's rouge !!!
Now I'll see if I can watch the rest of the video. . . lol

      Oh hey . . .
      Cut with Brown
      Clean it up with Green
      Polish it with White.
Personally, I would use a separate wheel for each color of jeweler's rouge. That way you're not wasting time cleaning or product.
I actually keep 3 different grinders, each one with different types of wheels. I intend to buy several more grinders too. I don't like to spend time changing the wheel every 3 minutes.

Love the video, doing the same to an old canoe now. How did you attach the Zephyr wheel to the harbor freight polisher?

Looking at the Alumacraft logo it looks like it has a 1/4” reveal around the outside of the blue, I would suggest you make the white as a back ground and use the blue with the letters cut out of it allowing the white to show through.

I don’t know if I could do it that way without getting bubbles or wrinkles in it.

Marks Misfit World I wish I lived closer. Do you have the clear transfer tape? If you do, you could apply an oversized piece of the clear transfer tape to the blue vinyl, remove it from the backing paper and line it up over the white vinyl without any transfer tape it place, creating the two layers you need with one transfer tape. Reference the bubbles, try a test piece or two, it was the easiest way most times on a small project..

    • @Marksmisfitworld
      @Marksmisfitworld  4 роки тому

gsettlemyre I will give that a try. I have lots of vinyl and I do use clear transfer tape.

Marks Misfit World You got this. Take your time. Maybe try small reference diamonds outside of the pattern in the four corners, that way you can line up the blue over the white while looking through the clear transfer tape. Cut the white first with the diamonds, change over to the blue and cut them with the same diamonds, changed to blue of course...oh, weed the white first removing any excess vinyl, and I’m sure you know how to make the lettering in cutout style...

I’m In The process of polishing my canoe now. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I waned it down real good with 250 then 300 grit. Bought a variable speed grinder with the Zephyr wheels and the rouge green and white bars. Some of it looks great, but others spots look really dull and the black build up doesn’t come off. Can you offer any advice? Tell ya what wish I never would of fooled with it cuz I’ve spent a small fortune and it isn’t working right. I am hardly using any pressure and my Bosch grinder is smoking lol!

Some areas on my canoe I used Zephyr 40 aluminum polish with 0000 steal wool to get the black off of the aluminum. Polishing aluminum is not the easiest and can get frustrating at times but in the end it looks so good.

You should be buying battery tools. Not ones buying tools with power cords anymore.....

As soon as I can get a tool that will last for 2 hours on one charge with constant use and cost under $50 I will buy one.

Sorry Gene. No respectable Aluminum polishing man could or would ever use a battery powered device. The sustained high current power is simply not there. Maybe in 20 years.

Lol. He'd be recharging a battery operated polisher every 15 mins. Go away. 🙄

…and, I wouldn’t buy a battery powered anything from Harbor Freight. If that polisher makes it through this canoe job ill eat my elbow.
