- Marriage and ancient Rome was much different from how we view it today. While we usually associate marriage with love, in ancient Rome it was closer to a business transaction, and women were closer to slaves than they were people under the law. In this video we will explore the different types of marriage recognized during the Roman Republic and what the typical marriage was like, as well as some surprisingly modern customs at the Romans engaged in.

Hey this is really interesting. I see a lot of similarities that are still around today. In the early 1990s, hen I got married, it was still a common tradition for the husband to carry his bride through the threshhold of their new home. And mine did too! Thanks, Historidame for this enlightening view of marriage from Roman times and seeing where some of our north american traditions stemmed from.

Can't remember where I listened or read this, so maybe you or someone else could remind us; When was bride's father allowed to kill his daughter's husband and then the possessions and belongings of this dead husband transferred to bride's family?
I did come across that in my research, but the sources conflicted with each other, making it difficult to tell what was accurate and what was exaggerated. In the end, I decided not to include it in the video for accuracy's sake.
