The Sennheiser has some more bottom end and clarity, but the 57 sounded smoother. Decisions, decisions…

Shure sm57 is the V30 of mics. Plain and simple

04:57 vs 05:25 says a whole lot. The 57 is good in the room ambience and in a kind of smoothness while the 906 is a bit more harsh sometimes, the 57 is better in the drive sounds than in clean sounds imo. If I need a good guitar intro or solo I'd take the 906, and for the rest too because you can mix away what is there but not or much harder mix towards what's not there without getting an unnatural sounding guitar.

I went with Sennheiser e609 at our church because of its flatter eq and fuller range. I liked where I had set my mid on my amp and didn't want the additional mid "honk" that SM57 had. I wanted the sound to come out just as I had set up and didn't need additional mid "honk" of SM57

e609 for blues/rock and sm57 for high gain metal.

609 is great. It is a true representation of your tone. I do not think it colors the tone like the 57. The 57 sounds distant and has to be used straight on. Some use it at a 45 degree angle but I just dont like it. The scooped mid sound is nt doing it for me. I bought the E609. Sounds terrific.

Thank you, this was great! 609 has a lot of proximity effect it seems.

With the electric guitar it is seldom heard thru a mic without being used in context with other instruments. As such the Sennheiser with it's much fuller sound could sound muddy and indistinct in context with a band playing. If one only had kind of mic to use for each individual thing needing to have a mic there is nothing better than SM57. i say that because it is still used a hundreds of times more than all others even when those others had other choices. Better still it is only $100. I bought mine new yet it is so old it is made in America and still doing its thing.

This is my first time hearing them back to back, so I was surprised how much more low end there was on the e609. I will say that live, the first thing I always do when mixing is cut all the low end on the guitar channels, then slowly bring it back in until it’s balanced with the bass and kick drum. But I think for recording, I’ll probably switch back to the SM57 after doing this test

@@Chucksguitargeekery - Interesting. I recently did just the opposite. Have both and I primarily only record now, no live work. Since the e609 has more low end, I can eq it in the recorded mix like you do when running sound. Mainly just using the SM57 for scratch vocal tracks.

I am here because I saw both be at the similar price range, and because I am pondering over which one to use as a cab mic. I think there are more factors to play, like the type of music played and the wanted tone. Angle of the mic and position relative to the element in the cab. But based on this video, I think e609 offers what I am looking for.

609 blows the 57 away in this one.

Sorry, I don't think so. The SM57 is IMO more mix ready recording sound. There is too much low end with 609 which is nice in isolation but it would need to be cut in the DAW anyway.

@@hbo001 After having spent almost 20 years recording with e609 and sm57's for guitar, there is absolutely NO reason to use a sm57 if you have an e609 IMO. Unless you for some reason, _like_ that sound.... You're going to be EQing the hell out of that SM57 anyways if you want to get a good tone. Way less EQ to get a good tone from e609.

The 609 sounds much better when the guitar is miced up alone, but the 57 might cut through a live mix better. I dunno. I use the 906, but I'm only micing an acoustic with a humbucker through a Pro Jr..
