The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episode we had Clarke from Lyndon Trout Ponds and Fish Hatchery measure water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Aeration of the pond is something we will be exploring as we see how the season develops. We are hopeful that water remains cool so dissolved oxygen in the water remains high.
After we dig the pond, we will let is sit for a few weeks before putting our fish in the pond. Ideally you will let the pond sit for a full year, but we are not patient enough for this.

Awesome. Yeah. Think of the Koenders pond care as life insurance for the pond. Always add a little. That alone will keep the pond in check. 😊

I've been enjoying learning this natural pond stuff it is very interesting. Thank you for all you share and continue having fun learning about the world we live in and interacting with it. Creation starts with a Dream, carry on :)

Another great video, the pond is coming along really good. I really need to get out fishing.. Looking forward to see the future of the water fall. Cheers from Simcoe County Ontario Canada!🍁🍁
Yes! You’re finally doing a fall and stream. And the bog will help. Get some hyacinth and water lettuce. Stoked on happy fish🐸🍺🔪🔥
Love this series. We need more 😂
I love this series!
great job on the pond! would be a bit cautious about gutting and bleeding the trout in the pond. potential vector.
Tadpoles.......Yes. Was dying to see what would happen.
Thanks.
Cattails tend to spread pretty good all on there own
That soil looks fantastic where your digging maybe put in a garden
Do what you want my friend. I enjoy watching all of its interesting to me
Great video, Glad to see you back!! Follow Kevin too. Great builds.
Here in Florida cattails will grow in the middle of a lake and completely take it over. They don't just grow around the edges here.
But good luck with everything. Enjoyed the video
Wow, interesting. Ours are for sure only in the edges.
Looking so good
Great video👍
Awesome pond 😎👍🐟
Salut from Brunswick, Maine, US. I was hatched in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1952.

Great video thank you so much n very learning too 👍
I have been watching this channel a long time and I'd rather see you building ponds than eating minnow stew. Keep doin whatever you feel, cause those videos are the best !
pond is looking amazing. cant wait for more updates. any thoughts on doing some more of the wilderness survival series? would love to see you team up with zach or greg. but hope you continue feeling better gastrointestinal problems are the worst, i had it for a couple years before i figured out my issue.
I really like the pond videos well I like most of your videos
Very nice i like 🎉
100% seen Rainbows eat tadpoles and smaller frogs. Maybe only 2lb +. One of the lures we use in early season (UK - fly fishing) are called a tadpole and meant to mimic them
my koi carp used to love tadpoles and the small frogs, perch and pike eat as well. so bet the trout ul love um.
Watched all the way through
Thanks!
Amazing videos ❤
I buy 25 pound bags (11.33-kg) of Multi-flock poultry feed pellets. For the ducks.
pond good 👍👍👍
Pond looking great nice ❤😂😂
Love Your Videos Sir
Don's are the most low key laid back guys ever
Nice video! Full Stop!!!
3:15 o yea you can tell there good chums
Like a big aquarium, you need the right plants on the bottom and the top. What those plants are? I don’t know. Lol. Plant Life in the pond is crucial or algae and muck is what that pond will want to always be
NICE!!!!!😎👍🏻👍🏻
Chris with that dye in the water, don't you know we can see the grain bin at the bottom it looks so bad you should probably dig it out js 🤷🏽
Definitely freaken kidn 😅 Loven The Pond Updates it's Looking Great Chris Thanks⁉️
🤘🏽💀🤘🏽
Interestingly, I have never seen the grain bin since we put it in. The pond has had a great depth this year, lots of rain.
@@TheWoodedBeardsman 👌🏽 o I know it I love your sarcasm about the haters so figured I'd say somthen 🤣 we've Never seen it unless you show it to us
🤘🏽💀🤘🏽
I think you should be doing what you want to do and if we, your subscribers enjoy it we will watch. Your channel is unique and should not be compromised to satisfy the few. Life is to short, so go to your own drum beat. Ill be there to listen to you play.
Hay,great video,as always, chew on gum enough time ,no taste, but sticky, small piece gum on hook,= small bait attachment “A”,don’t forget ,more intake of garlic = less bugs,Tanks Again “A”!
Put water hyacinth it block the sun and you could eat the flower taste good
I don't know about trout, but I have used tadpoles and frogs as bait for bass, blue gill, crappie, pickerel, pike, and musky. So fish defiantly eat them.
Super👌super 👌super
Main pond fish which eat tadpoles include Koi, Carp and Bass. I have caught large Northern pike using frogs as bait...but don't use live bait anymore... (Nor do I fish much anymore either, really...but if I did....)
Yeah, something about putting a frog on a hook doesn't sit right with me.
I have Marsh marigold in pots, full sun and pots are sitting in 10cm of water. This plant starts fast in spring, flowers in April but then for the rest of the year it just sits there looking beaten up and not growing much
Hmmm, okay, so probably not the best choice. I'll see if I can find something better.
@@TheWoodedBeardsman Well I like it cause in April my pond is dead and this plant looks green growing well and flowering alot. I don't think it's a big NO3 remover judging by growth. But maybe it is in spring, and to me that is the most important time when lillies need a head start vs thread algae.
thats so cute ! You built a perfect misquito habitat 😂
The fish are going to eat'em for sure. The biggest issues is the swamp out back, it's a disaster for mosquitoes.
@TheWoodedBeardsman love your videos. Keep giving me ideas 💡
Full stop
tad poles make amazing bait but here in the states you better look at the law very closely
As for the mosquitos have you tried building bird houses in the nearby trees? Bird Love mosquitos and if you created a Bird Housing Habitat In your nearby woods they will eat ALOT if not all of your mosquitos. Give it a shot man we used to build Houses for Purple Martin and Swallow. Give it a shot man I BET you will be surprised with the results
Good idea!
To move water from the pond to the new wetland. Couldn't you put a say 4" pipe sloping up with a air pump feeding bubbles inside of it to move the water? Kinda like a fishtank filter uses bubbles to move water into a filter?
It'll just seep over slowly.
Will digging those ponds reduce groundwater in swampy areas? I'm looking for a solution on my property.
Not really. I may increase evaporation though, which may.
You could use some permaculture around there and get some sort of indigenous nitrogen fixers.
@@DM.theWoodedBeardsman what'd I win?
You should plant Cannabis or Hemp by the pond deer love to
If they are in Canada They need License to grow Hemp, I dont think 4 Weed plants are gonna help anything grow or thrive.
Weed is actually now legal for personal consumption.
Good work Chris pond looks awesome
I wonder if there’s a type of lily pad grow in Canada
Yes, we have several. I have been scouting, but I'm hesitant, not sure I want them to spread too much, so we'll see!
Slowly turning the whole family into youtubers.... When's pops fishing channel launch? 🤔 🤣
lol
😮
How does the pond not overflow? Maybe I missed that part in an earlier segment… I’ve been watching all of them but maybe I spaced out 😅
It's ground fed, so it's got kind of a limit to it.
Gotcha. So gravity 😅🤷♂️💁🏻
How long does that natural pond dye last? Does anybody know?
That's a good question that I would like to know too. It's persistent so far.
I'm still not sure whaqt the game plan is. Was it to expand the pond or...?
Fix all the problems was the goal this year. If you look back in the series you can see all the major and minor adjustments to produce a better quality pond.
@@TheWoodedBeardsman ok
Wouldn’t blue gill and catfish be easier to harvest ?
Possibly, but we have to buy from a licensed stocker, and I don't know any that do around here, all trout.
The fish seem healthy when they flop so much. I wouldn't be surprised if you get turtles in there eventually. Is it deep enough to keep fish year round? Maybe just keeping the air going all winter, would make enough current so the Ice won't get too thick? Or would that destroy the setups? Is that windmill going to spin all winter? If you plan on draining it every Autumn, that sounds like a lot of work. I read that some rainbow trout migrate to salt water, then they become steelhead trout. Don't know if it's true. But if they die and float up to the top, at least they'd be preserved in salt. That was a joke.
We plan to skate on the pond in the winter, so we can't run the aerator all winter. Perhaps in a future year. Yes, the aerator would just keep running otherwise, and the pond probably wouldn't freeze over.
I had a pet brook trout and one time i fed him some tadpoles and ate it but he spit it out
What size rod is that?
I'm not sure, but it's a heavy weight! With all the structures in there now, gotta horse the fish in a bit or they will wrap up in stuff.
The marsh marigold isn’t the right plant for that, you want Vetiver grass and you’ll want to make at least two more of those little floating things. Put the Vetiver grass in all three. It will make a tremendous difference in your pond.
@TheWoodedBeardsman I’m assuming this ^ “you’re my lucky winner” thing isn’t actually you?
