  • This video dives into a fundamental concept in game design, the Magic Circle. This concept describes the boundary between games and the real world and is one of the most interesting ideas in game design, in my opinion.
    Special thanks to Corvus and MML for critiquing my script and recording some Smash footage.

    Amazing work! This explains the propagation of meaning and meme through the interactive medium (not just purely video games).

    In all honesty, while I think your video is good and the thesis of Magic Circle is pretty cool, I think an ambience song on the background would give it more personality.

    hot damn chariot man back at it again with the hot lessons.
    I’d learned about the magic circle and the absurdity of games at school once, but it was only introduced as far as rules went.
    Your explanation of how different players interacting within the bounds of game systems and the social constructs that occur can create different magic circles was really interesting though.
    I used to experience that first-hand in multiplayer DS games I played a lot of back in high school. I might actually be creditable for building one in Cod Waw come to think of it. But it’s never occurred to me to look at these sorts of circles as being part of the game, I’ve had a tendency to think of them as something outside of them.
    This was dope af fam 👌

    Only 484 views? What?
    I would just like to say that there are many game design channels nowadays, but none of them have covered something so abstract - yet useful - in game design. Yet, I am baffled by the views....
    As for feedback, the visual footage isn't really engaging, and the video itself dragged on a little more than it should. Also this is a nitpick, but there were no subtitles, but its understandable with 484 views.
    Regardless, the concept and topic you covered, and the information you presented was really informative!
    Cheers!

      Honestly, I am not super surprised this video only got 484 views. For a variety of reasons, this probably wasn’t going to get many views. Firstly, my channel is still quite small so there isn’t a huge audience waiting to watch the video. Secondly, it’s very hard for UA-cam to recommend this video because it’s just not something there are a lot of videos on so they cannot send people over to this video. Thirdly, youtube searches will work better, but I doubt there are many people looking up “the magic circle” on UA-cam. Fourthly, it’s a very theoretical video, so I cannot get the attention of any particular gaming community aside from maybe game developer circles, which are tiny compared to other communities.
      All of these things are holding the video back and there isn’t a lot I can do about it but I felt this video was important enough to make despite the fact that it probably won’t be super popular.
      Thanks for the feedback btw. I always try to keep that in mind for future videos to hopefully improve their quality.
      I guess the best thing you can do is to simply share this video with others who you think would enjoy it. It might not be many views, but it’s something you can do to help.

      Thank you very much for sharing so much info!
      The points you presented all add up to the views being as they are, and it's obvious you have done your research on them.
      Though, the concept of the magic circle is important to plan around as a designer and I haven't even heard of it before
      Though, I want to mention the 4th point of yours, and the fact this is a very theoritical video is why I was so interested in it, even with the ok footage, they are so rare to find! (and legit abstract game design videos like this one, not fancy ones randoms make)
      Though, it does make sense that your average gamer or designer won't be super interested, but I definitely enjoyed it
      I will try to share it, though, this is share-able only on other game designers haha
      As for the feedback, anytime, the content you put out is seriously underrated, so I wanted to at least express my opinion on this very video because it is unique from the others you (and others) make.
      And also, I am looking a lot into such videos nowadays because I plan to do some game design videos myself in a few months, and seeing popular videos like GMTK's isn't as insightful because I'm only seeing one half of the coin. Seeing videos like this one, that don't have many views and trying to find out why is that a thing, when they are so similar is so important. And that's why, I have to thank you for spending some time to give a detailed reply as to why, because there is nothing more valuable than the knowledge of the creator on this topic!
      Cheers!

      To be fair, I think that game got its name from this concept. I haven’t played it so I guess I wouldn’t be able to cite it, even if it fit the subject.

    • @subprogram32
      @subprogram32 5 років тому +1

      Yeah it almost certainly did, it's a game about a game going wrong mid-development after all. It probably would not even fit the subject super well, it's just amusing to think about.

    10:57 Playing chess as a child ruined Into the Breach for me, you have so few options in the game that looking at every possible move and then selecting the best 3 took very little time at all. Rather than actually getting to plan attacks I always felt like I was just selecting the 'correct moves' from the board and I couldn't find the award winning strategy game in there that so many media outlets kept praising.

      @@Randomness65535 It's not so much about intelligence or IQ, it's more about familiarity. Playing chess doesn't make you smart, it makes you good at chess and the point is that Into the Breach (even more so than most turn based games) has so many similarities to chess in it's gameplay but nowhere near the range of options

      I feel like I should respond with a serious post this time but I don't have much to say besides that I haven't heard this assessment of Into The Breach and you have a pretty interesting take on it. Haven't played it myself but I also noticed everyone giving it positive reception. I'm not much of a chess player but I wonder how quickly I'd get accustomed to small number of choices.

      @@Randomness65535 I wrote a video on Into the Breach and there's a ~2min section in the middle where I describe in better detail why Into the Breach felt like ches puzzles to me. It did get a lot of positive reviews and I have a slightly cynical suspicion as to why - most big reviewers and game media outlets try to get reviews out early for extra clicks, meaning they often don't play games for as long as they should to truly review them. The early stages of Into the Breach are a lot of fun, before you 'solve' the game and any repetitive elements are masked over by the novelty of unlocking new unit types - and I have a suspicion that many early reviews were based on this honeymoon period in the game and that subsequent reviews were swayed by this early opinion ("Everyone liked Into the Breach, I don't want to be the only guy saying it's a bit boring"). But maybe that's a bit *too* cynical

    • @Randomness65535
      @Randomness65535 5 років тому +1

      @@Table53 I honestly can't say if it's cynical or realistic, but I'm sure there's an element of that among games journalists. Hell, journalists in general. Maybe that's why we see journalists' feet being held to the fire more often these days.

    Its a theater term originally right? like when the lights go down and the actors and audience both have an unspoken agreement to forget the outside world and be absorbed into this new place for a few hours. Kinda like suspension of disbelief but a much more useful concept even outside of gaming/theater. imo

    • @Chariot_Rider
      @Chariot_Rider  2 роки тому

      Originally the term was coined by Johan Huizinga. In Homo Ludens, he wasn’t drawing from theater. That isn’t to say that theater doesn’t have a similar concept or that theater ideas aren’t useful for game design

    If you ever set-up a subscribestar account, I would gladly toss a dollar every month your way (I know, not much, might not be worth the hassle for you. But I have a bunch of creators I support and I prefer supporting them equally - e.g. 10 creators x 5$ each is a bit too much for me).
