  • African Roots: Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane was born in June 20, 1920, in Manjacaze, province of Gaza, southern Mozambique. He worked as a shepherd until he was around 10 years old. Educated in Portugal and the United States, Mondlane was a professor of sociology and received a PhD in Anthropology from Harvard University before moving to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Eduardo Mondlane had a vision of a free, united and independent Mozambique, unshackled from the Portuguese colonial authorities. In 1962 he founded the Mozambique Liberation Front FRELIMO. Though he was assassinated while in exile in 1969, before his vision of an independent Mozambique could be realised, Mondlane is still recognized as a vital part of Mozambique's struggle to rid itself of Portuguese colonial rule.
