BMW E36 4 Cylinder Valve Cover Gasket Replacement

  • Replacing a valve cover on a bmw e36 4 cylinder is a rather quick process, typically taking about 1 - 2 hours. The worst part about this job is if the valve cover gets stuck to the head, in that case it can take some serious hits with a rubber mallet and prying to get the valve cover to release.
    Typically the valve cover gasket is replaced when you notice that it is leaking oil or you'r changing the spark plugs and happen to notice that one or multiple plugs are filled with oil.
    Overtime valve cover gaskets become hard and brittle, they eventually become susceptible to oil leaks.

    I just did mine thank to you! A couple of my plugs had oil on em and one was even drenched in oil. I have changed everything and have tested the car . I feel a bit more power/torque out of it and it’s runs smoothly. But before I had done the gasket job , I found one of the spark plug gaskets on top of the cams and I spotted it while opening the oil cap looking inside the engine. This is the reason I resorted to replacing all the gaskets . I originally went in to do the spark plugs and after I finished the first time I noticed white smoke and looked into the engine but everything seemed fine. After I replaced everything (I just finished 30 mins ago ) for the first 15 mins it would smoke when you rev it . Now the car is completely fine and feels great but I was just wondering if you’d have an idea of what was going on?

    Excellent video! You sound like a teacher.
    Do you by any chance have a video in which you test the coils or is it impossible to test all 4 cylinders separately?

    That blue plastic item is for removing the plug wires.

    Should we use a gasket maker under the gasket ? Some people said its a good idea. I'm hesitant. I read that it needs 10Nm. I did that and one of the bolt stripped the head. The bolt is fine but its now spinning in the hole. I did not use a lot torque now, but this is not the 1st time the valve cover was replaced, so who knows what happened before. What to do ? Helicoil ? its on the pass side, the very first on the corner.

    You are supposed to use silicone caulk on 6 locations under the cover.

    Thanks for your video! I have replaced my catalytic converter since the original went bad 5 times! I found out that oil in the spark plug well closest to the firewall was filled with oil, causing the replacement cats to fail time and time again.. I guess i did a bad job of seating the VCG cover when I replaced it 5 years ago. Also, I noticed you didn't use atv sealant. Do I need to? Perhaps that caused the leak in the spark plug well?

    where did you order the valve cover gasket kit from?

  • @oldwortex5818

    I did the replacement but one of the bolt started spinning. Right front on the right side, closest to the fender. I though the bolt shredded its thread, but no, its the head that shredded the thread. So I need to drill and tap and heli-coil the hole. Its ok but I can't straight drill into the hole as the ign coil bracket is in the way. I need to bend it or cut it off and have it welded back. However can it cause so massive of a leak that the car runs rough ? If I plug the hose that connects the valve cover to the PCV valve, the car runs fine. It seems that the car sux air from the valve cover and causes the rough idle. But its a new gasket and although I did not use gasket maker, I did the 10nm torque which is just above finger tight. The only "broken" issue here is the missing bolt on the front corner. Would it be enough to pull air in ? Am I experiencing some other issue and this is just the symptom ?

      Does your 318i had the injectors on lower position than the video? If you watch my engine from upview the injectors are on the left part of engine block. I think i dont need to dismount injectors or wires

    You didn't need to remove the black bracket with electronics on top to remove the valve cover? You cut that part off. Genuinely curious.

    • @e36fanatics29
      @e36fanatics29  5 років тому +3

      Are you referring to the wire harness? If so then no, there was plenty of space to remove the valve cover. Besides that there was no other bracket with electronics on top of the valve cover on this vehicle.

    For you to consider, when disconnecting the spark plug you should use the blue extraction tool and a screw driver 😒

      in the manual it is actually called a cylinder head cover. Torque spec is to 10Nm (89 in-LB) about 7.4 ft-LB

    How did you get the oil away from your spark plug?

    • @e36fanatics29
      @e36fanatics29  6 років тому

      Rolled up an extra absorbent paper towel, I've heard of people using a Shopvac as well with an extension than can go around the spark plug, I like that idea more.
