This was a very wonderful and simple explanation on what person centered therapy is all about it. I love it and would definitely want to watch more of your videos to understand the two other concepts formulated by Carl Rogers that make therapy successful. Thanks! :)

Hi Chris! Thank you for this video. I'm learning about different counselling theories and your video helped me consolidate all the information. The story about how Rogers formed this theory was particularly useful. I'll be watching more of your videos and I hope to start creating more mental health related videos myself. New sub :)

    I don't know how
    to change
    my life around...
    I watch this video
    and what arises in me
    is overwhelm
    and stress.
    my dream life feels
    999-trillion universes
    away from my reality:
    - I have minimal work (I live in poverty)
    - the place I rent is old-old and teeny-teeny tiny-tiny
    - I have passions and talents that could make me rich, but...
    - I'm single, have been my whole life, I die for true love
    - fat and diabetic
    - old now, no longer attractive
    - no friends
    - always a million-trillion stressful things to do...

Yes, I agree, it can´t be done better!
Chris, I wonder, where exactly is the difference between client-centered vs. person-centered?
Especially, regarding these 6 conditions, and the modus of the non-directivity?
Or to make it clearer, when Mick Cooper talked about "purism", what exactly did he mean?
Is there a heterogen or more homogen group in-between 1. client-centered therapist & counsellors?
      (Referring to those 2 aspects)
      2.
      a) Person-centered Counsellors´& therapists, don't accepting this 6 conditions (only 3) and a non-directivity position (preferring directivity).
      b) Accepting them (6 cond.), but don´t believing they are enough?
      c) Another group, perhaps accepting those conditions - but don't believing in actualizing tendency?
Or, is it more.... the more therapists exist, that more versions are in the field? (anything goes?) and what does this mean for the person centered approach?

    • @ChrisTheCounsellor
      @ChrisTheCounsellor  Рік тому

Good question! A short answer is that Rogers changed the name through his lifetime to capture more of the essence of what the approach meant. So client-centred was termed when he was thinking primarily of therapeutic work with clients, but then moved to person-centred later in his life because he saw that this approach was in fact beneficial on many levels (group work, teaching, conflict resolution etc etc) and so person-centred just captures the wider use of the approach, rather than just being in therapy, one-to-one, with clients. Hope that helps!

You've produced an excellent clear, introduction. The only thing I would say is that it took Rogers another decade, after the therapeutic work he did with the "intelligent mother", to realise how important empathy was in therapeutic practice. At the time he worked with her, "acceptance" was the only core condition he had developed.

I had had the exact same thought as everything I hear about it seems related to human nature/mental health/psychological tension, everything. Seems so relevant, but first things first, I need to go and see it! Cheers for the suggestion :)
