Now we want other monsters of guitar - Jonathan Kreisberg, Mike Moreno, Julian Lage... It'd so nice.. And, ofc, thank u so much for dat pleasure of listening!
There’s 900 comments here so not sure if will get read, but for what it’s worth: things are not ‘black and white’ in terms of good and bad. Kurt sounds like he got shot out of a cannon in the beginning of his solo which is way cool! But…it also kind of leaves him no where to go. I think the nature of his sound with all the attack taken out makes it hard to play anything relaxed and swingin’., it’s like you have to go for the Coltrane ‘sheets of sound’ thing with that sound . So…. while I was thought Kurt’s playing was ‘impressive’….maybe I’m old school or something, but I felt like either he needed to sustain that ‘pedal to the metal’ thing for the duration….or find a way to be more ‘expressive’ in his expression of ‘swing’. And don’t get me wrong, I love Kurt’s playing… I think he’s the most influential jazz guitarist around, but…..objectively, this particular solo was not totally satisfying from beginning to end. Nice moments for sure though!
I agree. It's not like you can't do this but the rest of the band was really empathetic to the older cooler recordings and there was a clash here. There's plenty of great moments within the solo though, so I can't be too miffed
Drummer is holding him back. Check his playing from the same live but on "Nica's Dream" with another drummer. Rhythmic support is everything in this music, if you're misunderstood by the rhythm section playing with you, no matter who you are, you won't fly anywhere.
Why is everyone acting like this is a good performance? Let's be real Kurt's playing sounds like it doesn't matter, completely lifeless. The others may have played well, but I can't get past the monotony of the beginning. Kurt is an exceptional musician, and for whatever reason he was off his game, but that doesn't mean we have to lie to ourselves. 583 likes... yikes! if we like everything then likes don't matter. The melody is played so well by this sympathetic band. Then the guitarist begins soloing, as if he forgot the essence of the song, and crams in a lot of notes, guns a’ blazing. I don’t get it.
What I hear is that almost every note he plays is a reference to the original melody or a compliment to it. I find it masterful how he’s able to spin an entirely original solo without ever losing track of the melody and to continue to referencing it in many different ways. Same with Emmet’s solo!
Trust me. He is deep in the essence. His knowledge of the style and his vocabulary would not allow otherwise. Maybe your ears need more mileage. Listening well takes practice too.
@ I gave it another listen and still maintain that the guitarist may be deep in the essence, but for ME he solos with way too many notes, throwing his technique around. (Well why not, he worked very hard to get it). For ME, this sounds like too much physical and intellectual playing and less heart. To ME, this sounds like a great exercise. Don’t get me wrong, I like Coltrane, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Scott Henderson, many others who are all notey kind of players.
With Kurt and Emmet you see the difference between a meaningless solo, just a bunch of notes, and A musical one, fulfilled with ideas, melodies, space and storytelling
Not every solo is gonna be boffo any given day. At this level of playing, even a bad day for them will be better than anything you can eke out, bro. Just enjoy it and learn something.

So absurdly good. I saw Kurt give a clinic + performance at UNI. His style + standards works really well.

Refreshing new stuff by Kurt. That is jazz all about otherwise it is a formula.

The tempo makes me hurt from how much it drags. Ik it's intentional but 💔

Kurt slayed on this track - no idea what you are talking about. Great contrast between his and Emmet’s solo.

Ratio
@@zerprofniloc interplay. With kurt the rhythm section is flat and steady, with emmet they are enjoying it

Your ears have some progress to do.....
