Your review was really good! I especially like the opening sequence when you created a mini-vid of them interacting with each other. Well done! I have all 4 Star Wars droids, and I'm always amazed at how realistic they are. the movements and sound are awesome! The only thing that I would say, is that you need to watch a lot of videos that talk about cleaning them. If you use them even a few times, the debris gets caught in them, and they don't move so well. Other than that, they have incredible fidelity to the characters in the movie!

Honestly, I’m just in love with these little guys. :D They’re just so well designed, and I love how much time Sphero put into making them feel as much like the droids from the movie as possible. :) I would love to get either R2-D2 or R2-Q5 for Christmas, but if not, I definitely plan to buy one of them, because I’m a huge a fan of astromech droids, and I’ve just gotta have these. >u

I got the R2Q5 since it's a limited run and only at Best Buy I will get R2D2 later
I now own R2-D2, BB-8, and BB-9E.. all three interact very well together. I've noticed that BB-9E is more of the initiator to get BB-8 and R2-D2 going. I just ordered R2-Q5 yesterday from Best Buy for $99.00, but today it went back to its original price. They are great interactive droids with the Star Wars App.
how do they be programmed?
Best video out that reviews these droids...i love the R2Q5 ..i just ordered it from best buy with the force band...i love Artoo but had to get the empire droid even tho his screen time was so limited in Jedi...it should also be mentioned that R2Q5 is a limited release and only a few thousand were made :)

Bax Unlimited Crazy..I ordered mine online and it came with a free force band... The R2-D2 has had a price drop as well in some places...it's a shame more people aren't picking these up tho...they are great robots 👌...

I can almost picture a droid duel (like that one with R2-D2 vs R3-S6 in Star Wars: The Clone Wars S1E6 “Duel of the Droids”)
It's a long shot considering this video was done last year, but, after owning it for about 7 months, how would you rate it? You had tested it on various surfaces but really didn't say how bad it picks up things with the two rubber treads. Could they be cleaned with ease? Did R2 scuff much when he does the fall over? Compared to BB8, how well would you consider it made? I haven't had a chance to have a hands-on experience with either of them but from what I can tell just by the fact BB8 is spherical (and has a magnetic head) he would clean easier. How does R2 do on hardwood floors? Does he drive really well with the Force Band (in comparison to the phone app?). I know it's a lot of questions but I'm just weighing my options. Thank you for your otherwise excellent video & review.
Does 'Patrol Mode' at use sensors to stop R2 falling off cliffs (edge of a desk)? [So R2 can safely play on a desk.] Alternatively can you pre-program a specifc course and actions (and store program for later repeat) to accomplish the same or similar objectives of having R2 roam a desktop without falling off? Does he get around on glass top tables OK i.e maintain traction? Cheers
Hello Sean - great questions. Sphero's R2-D2 is not equipped with the necessary hardware to avoid falls so use with caution! With the droids app you can draw a path for R2 to follow but if you are looking to program and save a route, download the Sphero EDU app. The Sphero EDU app allows for further control of existing capabilities like speed, timing, heading, etc. Hope this helps!
Probably in the need future there will be more tech in them. Like sensors and other things to make them do other tasks. Would be cool to use them to control the TV set or voice interaction. Maybe in second or third gen.
Which 1 is the best to start off with ?
Hi! can those droids follow you? or you really need to control them to areas you want them to go? coz i think if SPHERO can do alot of amazing things to those droids.... a simple follow command wouldn't be hard to program...... if there is a "follow mode" i might buy those and collect them all.

I bought R2-D2 for my grandson. They had a deal for $99 INCLUDING the force band. I have to say, this is THE MOST AMAZING TOY I've ever seen! Within 5 minutes I was starting to think about moving the guts of this into a full-sized replica.

how responsive are the r2 units in force band mode? I noticed from other videos that the bb8 was pretty good. Could you attempt to run around some obstacles or whatnot? How does the steering while driving forwards work out?

Oh my god I want them both!! If I could buy only one, which of the two would you recommend? Does one of them do more things than the other? On the sphero website they say "R2-Q5 will react to your presence thanks to its sensors", which is not written for R2-D2, but I haven't seen any review or comparison mention something about it so far. Have you noticed any difference?

Yeah I'd go R2 first since he's the cheaper and more famous option, but both can interact to you and each other, and have the same capabilities. Ima get all of them eventually though 😁
Does this just not work with android? The only droid app pertaining to sphero is the bb8 one, no other ones are listed.
I own R2, BB8, and BB9E, and I really want Q5. He looks so slick! His price just went down to $123.00 on Sphero.com, so who knows? I may get him for Christmas

I've heard that Sphero won't be renewing their license with Disney so in the end the app won't be further updated anymore and probably won't work on future phones, so these poor Droids might just turn into dust collectors which is a real pity!
Pick up the force band for around $10 so you can use it without a phone!

I'm pretty impressed with the apparent authenticity of RD-D2's behavior & personality. Also, looking at both of these droids, it's easy to see that the quality of their design is excellent.
Personally though, I'm going to wait for a future incarnation that has as many functional versions of R2's extra components (data arm, claw arm, blue tool arms, extended scope, electric zapper, welder, cutting wheel, etc. *) as are feasible to put in a device of this scale. I'd also love to see what some brilliant mind could come up with to simulate his holographic projector, too.
Watching him extend his scope to 'see' over obstacles, use his claw to grab at things, or even connect to a data port wall (included separately, or with the 'droid) would be awesome.
(* As seen in episodes IV, V & VI. Though more may exist on an original design schematic, somewhere)

I have the Q5. It's not as cool as the R2. Much less personality. Worse sounds. Dull. After Sphero split with Disney they issued a final firmware update. To get it ypu have to go to the Sphero web site and download the firm update app. The Disney app wont work.
Give them a “play music” function so I have a valid excuse to buy this lol. I want one !!!

It's easy to see that these droids were made with love. The quality goes way beyond just a simple toy... at any price. The R2 is the best R2 of any size I have ever seen. Pure cool. The bitter break up between Sphero and Disney must have been sudden because the R2Q5 droid is clearly unfinished and not nearly as cool as the R2 unit sad to say. It has zero "imperial menace" to it besides a great paint job. In fact it acts like a special ed droid, always getting stuck and making gurgling sounds. I leave mine charging in sentry mode. Even then it shoots forward for no good reason to go crashing to the carpet for no good reason. R2 is better.
